Fluff goes with peanut butter, not X-Wing.

By Cptnhalfbeard, in X-Wing

My favourite burger bar does the 'Elvis Burger', its a home made burger in a lovely bun but with peanut butter and raspberry jelly on it... sounds gross but its actually delicious.

I used to think you colonials (joke :) ) were crazy with peanut butter and jam/jelly sandwiches but they are frankly awesome.

ditto PB and banana.

I remember seeing a documentary on Elvis at a friend's house about - god, what, 15 years ago now? They described "the food that killed Elvis" - peanut butter and banana sandwiches, fried in rich, creamery butter.

Needless to say, we went straight to the 24-hour Tesco to get the ingredients...

I heard a rumor that in Wave 7, the scum faction will have pirate units riding space slugs. It doesn't fit the lore but, it should bring a good new mechanic about deployment on asteroids so it should be alright. Who cares about fluff anyway?

OK, now I actually want this.

We all do! ;P

Also heard that their PS9 slug rider would be called Muad'Dib and his ability would allow all friendly ship in range 1 to attack at the same PS, called Jihad or something...

Biggs? Biggs Darklighter, You're Alive!

That's great we need you to fly cover for another run, here we got you another X-wing and renamed it Red 3 just for you! Oh and don't mind the bulls-eye painted on the back, it is for uhmm... camouflage.

:unsure:_so, off you go then Red 3. <_<_Luke, I'm really starting to hate you.

_at least we didn't make you hold it like Porkins

Fluff-Wing > Math-Wing.

I love the fluff. Give me a good story over number crunching any day. And, no, I won't be winning any competitive tournaments with that kind of attitude.

You might. We're playing a pretty well balanced dice game, after all.

Fluff!? Down with fun I say! *

* this is sarcasm for the Americans :P

The Dice Gods care not of your pitiful offerings nor your statistical prophecies. Here you go.

4 Blanks after Target lock re-roll + focus token!

Also you all forgot about the cards, I see so many bull-statistics on dice but has anyone did the probability on a proton bomb killing an E-wing/Phantom, or what about removing actions which will make phantoms more vulnerable to critical damage? It is not a positioning game like chess, it is not a dice game like craps, it is not a card game like Magic the Gathering. It is a miniature game that uses cards dice and positioning models to play.

I was just going to chime in with Gadge's objection to calling the lore 'fluff', which also remains a pejorative in my lexicon. However, I see the OP is already clarifying his statement in a different direction.

For my part, the game is what it is. I do think if they divorce it too much from the lore that they'll deflate the enthusiasm that I have for it. I realize that they need to do what they need to do to keep a game exciting, but a large part of my excitement does come from the lore.

Mmm...peanut butter and Fluff on toasted bread.

I disagree with the OP. Peanut butter is vile and does not go with anything! -.-

I love fluff, and bacon.

X-Wing is just like any other game, some people love it purely for the tactical gameplay and go straight to multiplayer. Then there's the crowd that goes deep into the singleplayer campaigns and read all the fiction because they love some good fluff.

The bottom line is that this game would not be anywhere near what it is today without the fluff, since most pilot traits and ship specs are rooted in the fluff itself. Fluff is awesome, but not required. It's kind of like eating food without bacon, it gets the job done, but might not be as enjoyable...

I mean as an experiment

Try cutting out some bases that have the stats on them and a generic title like 'fighter', 'fighter bomber' (X wing, Y wing designations off the top of my head).

Play on a white sheet with 3' by 3' marked out on it.

Use the same mechanics, dice, rulers etc etc but remove any reference to *any* background be in star wars, star trek, WWI, modern air war etc etc.

Let me know how much fun that game is.

Obvious reduction to the absurd there and the OP has re-enforced that they didnt quite mean that but on the whole i think we're very lucky that we got a great set of mechanics that are quick to learn, hard to master and had them shackled to a great mythos.

In the past i've had to write my own games for things like Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper (and Vietnam skirmish game i had commissioned by a magazine) because nobody did a ruleset i liked to fit with that background.

The two do have to go hand in hand.

You can have the best material in the world to work with but if its executed poorly its very easy to make something that should have been great dire.

(game of thrones xbox game is a cracking example.... amazing world to put a game in and a licence wasted by a clunky, horrible interface, poor voice acting and sub par graphics... yep thats computer gaming rather than table top but the point still stands).

I still prefer my Judge Dredd rules to mongooses as well. I dont know about their Rogue Trooper ones as i've not seen em.

so...I got my first warning point for calling out the OP. Should I :

A) ask that it be removed due to the OP using belittling language and threatening violence?

or

B) Report the OP for belittling language and threats of violence?

should I also mention his use of the term "retarded" as equivalent to stupid?

Where has he used slurs or threatened violence? I haven't read that here.

"I just want to hit them on the nose with a newspaper and go "No! Bad nerd!"

"of course the game itself is based on fluff. Duh. I'm not retarded."

if my calling him a D!ck gets me points shouldn't his whole post?

:) (added a smile to show I was being "lighthearted")

I must have misinterpreted his comments...I guess that can easily happen...too bad I get the warning and he gets to make fun of "retarded" persons...or am I misinterpreting him again...sorry it's so easy to do.

maybe he will hit me on the nose and call me a bad nerd...that should solve this. ;)

I think you may be assuming things that he did not mean or intend. The smack a nerd on the nose with a paper comment obviously refers to training a dog, I did not take that as he is threatening violence at all. Likewise, I do not believe at all he intended to make fun of the handicapped. "Retard" is a proper word, it refers to limit or hold back. While it would be crude to address some else such as "You are a retard!" it is acceptable in reference to yourself. It is often used in reference to someone who is limited in mental abilities but depending on the context if it is done with malice. It is only the limitation of thought and speech through political correctness that many try to transform this proper word into vulgarity.

Many things are taken out of context or meaning on the internet, this appears to be one of them. An easy thing to do and we have all fallen prey to it now and then.

yeah i used to be terrible for it on forums

these days if i see a row coming i just leave the thread, if i've said what i need to say i leave it there and dont ever go back.

The old me would sit hitting 'refresh' waiting for the next part of the argument so i could prove i was right about toy soldiers to someone i've never met halfway around the world...

Tend to not do that anymore :)

That doesn't make it better. Dehumanizing through association with a dog and dehumanizing through violence is still the act of dehumanizing a class of people (in this case "nerd") - and is a terrible behavior to condone much less attempt to justify.

"Retard" is a proper word, it refers to limit or hold back.

When used in this context it is a verb (i.e. "the tide is in retard") and specifically refers to the act of being delayed - not limited. In the reference of held back you might mean to refer to an adjustment to the distributor of an internal-combustion engine that causes the spark for ignition to be generated later in the cycle - however this also wouldn't fit in the context of his statement. In point of fact, I the context of his usage fits only one definition of the word, which is "a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective" - that is (per Random House Kernerman Webster's College Dictionary, © 2010 K Dictionaries Ltd. Copyright 2005, 1997, 1991 by Random House, Inc. All rights reserved.) a Disparaging Slang usage of the word.

"You can't say retard on a forum!"

"Yes I can! RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD"

"You can't say retard on a forum!"

"Yes I can! RETARD RETARD RETARD RETARD"

retard seems fine...you just can't say D!ck

Every time I see someone talk about fluff when it comes to X-wing I just want to hit them on the nose with a newspaper and go "No! Bad nerd!" It's a game! I know you're you want this game to be exactly like the movies in every imaginable way, but it just can't.

Can we just leave the fluff to PB and Fluff sandwiches where it belongs? It has no place here.

</crotchety-old-man-rant>

Edit: of course the game itself is based on fluff. Duh. I'm not retarded. I'm saying that this game can't be 100% like the movies and I wish people would stop complaining about the mechanics of the game because they can't figure out the fluff to support it. Get a grip.

TL;DR - Stop liking what I don't like.

"retard" is now widely regarded as not being 'people-first' language and is generally frowned upon in most of polite society. It was pretty clear what the intended meaning behind his usage was and it was inappropriate and offensive.
