Motivations for leaving the game (for illiterates too)!

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing

Would we as players think to ourselves - 'OK, I'll still be playing this game 5 years from now'.

My answer's 'Yes'. Might even be 'Hell yeah!'

Are we still watching the movies 30 years later? - Hell yeah!

Second to 40K? I see far more xwing than I do GW anything. GW is becoming extinct.

Yet for some inexplicable reason, many people near where I live are leaving X-Wing to focus on 40K.

Then again, SE Michigan has a healthy Warmachine scene and as far as I can tell, a nonexistent X-wing scene. We all own stuff, we just don't get together often.

I have 2 young kids at home and get maybe 1 day a week to myself. I just choose to play the game with consistent players each week.

There's no accounting for good taste.

40K is already past the "best by" date. Older versions may be favored by veteran gamers but the more recent editions from what I have seen definitely don't have a veteran following but instead a younger crowd.

I'm actually planning a GW game in a few weeks; Over the Top by GW Historical.

People leave games for a varity of reasons:

they enjoy other games more

not enough ppl to play with, admit it its boring to play against he same 2 ppl all the time

major life events such as moves for jobs, getting married haveing a baby and so on

as an added note anyone that bashes other systems and companies should be perma banned

Is there an epidemic of a brain-eating disease going on there?

Don't know. Only reason I can think of for why someone would switch to 40K is that you could add scenery. Scenery modeling seems rather big near where I live, though.

Really, I don't even play 40K, and I can identify some flaws with it:

1. Very high cost in comparison to other games. I see that standard sets are selling for $50-$100. Compare that to the $15 you might spend for a TIE Phantom (lower if you buy online).

2. Stuff is unpainted. Unless you are an artist, I don't see why most adults (who are already quite busy with work) would want to spend extra time painting relatively costly minis.

3. Stuff seems flimsy. I know about people breaking brand new WH40K figures on accident.

4. Rules seem rather complicated. I mean, the figures don't come with any dials or bases. Looks like you need to reference some book all the time.

!. Theres ppl that have spent thousands on xwing, i mean look at the stupid sigs where ppl brag about how much they spent

2. repaints of xwing.... ppl like to personalize thier stuff, theres a HUGE hobby side to 40k and others

3. its actually sturdier than xwing stuff

4 40k is a set of rules slapped together by a model company, and 95% of them come with bases, dials arnt even a part of the game, anyone worth a **** will have all their models stats memorized

Interesting.

1. I know some people spend a lot on X-Wing, but it seems like to play the game, you can get by with spending less than $100. It appears that to even play a basic WH40K army, you have to spend over $100.

2. Yes. Come to think about it, this is one of the reasons other than the scenery, why people are leaving X-Wing for WH40K near where I live.

3. Is the customer service as good?

4. What are the codexes for, then?

Of course, I write as a layman, and am interested in learning more about other games, including WH40K. Not necessarily play it, but at least know what it is.

If I can comment with something of a scandalous point of view. I can see why people might be getting out of X wing. It can sometimes feel a bit stale. The game play of course is good, and simple, but after a lot of games played it can feel a bit too simple at some point. The more competitive it gets, the more you feel that stale feeling. There is only so much to the game to hold some peoples attention and lets face it in todays " I want it now ! " world, things lose shine fast and some people swing in quick and leave just as quick.

There is life that can lead people away, but there is also the fact some things just get old. Perhaps, this is something FFG saw coming, and so, we have armada coming. Now I'm not saying X wing is dying, but I'm saying everything is here to exist for just a small time, then its another games chance to reign.

Say what we will of 40k, its lasted the test of time and I won't claim X wing as near a contender to that throne until it either, kills 40k, or lasts for even half as long, which I hope it does.

yes, we all have reasons to do the things we do.

a buddy of mine played 40k, but since he could not get to our games more than once a month he started playing fantasy because that's what the stores were playing where he lives. then the went to warmachine so he stopped playing fantasy to spend on warmachine. now they are playing x-wing and he hasn't pulled out his 40k army for 2-3 months now. we have more fun playing x-wing, besides, he actually wins games of x-wing so that helps(horrible 40k tactician)

the 1 thing I hate about all games, and the reason I don't play in x-wing tournaments at stores anymore is the people who build the ubber lists just to win. the power gamers who play to win at any cost, don't cut anyone any slack and will actual throw a tantrum if they lose, and im not talking about just kids. the d-bag at my store is in his 40's and his son is worse.

so people like that can ruin a game experience if that's the only group you have to play with.

I play x-wing because my table top group requests it every time we get together, the only game that does in my library. There is also a good community where I live. There are three days a week where I could go to 3 different stores and play with different store groups.

We've had 30+ players for our regionals and are about to hold our Nationals two weeks from now.

There'll always be people leave a game for one reason or another. It's not hard to imagine someone picking up a large collection because they liked the look of it or were a big Star Wars fan, but then struggled to find someone to play the game with so the collection sits idle. If after six months you've played one game, what do you do? Leave it in your cupboard, or move on?

Then you've got the flights of fancy - someone is introduced to X-Wing by a friend, so they pick up the game, the friend introduces them to something else, so they sell X-Wing again and invest in the next game... it happens.

Or you could see someone who's invested heavily in, say, the Imperial faction but usually finds themselves playing Rebels sell their Imperials off so they can invest in more Rebel ships (or pre-order Scum for that matter)

I do think though that X-Wing will remain a staple for most players who invest due to the game's simplicity, the time it takes to play a game and how enjoyable it is.

Demand is out stripping supply.

That alone should tell anyone who questions the popularity of this great game that it's not going down any time soon.

Well, it is. WH40K still sells more than X-wing.

Did you just say non-existent X-wing scene in SE michigan?

For now it does its still got a very hard core fan base but even the die hard apologists are starting to waver since Kirby admitted they don't do market research.

X-wing may not take the number one spot for a few years but it'll probably happen, GW was top dog and had a monopoly on all kinds of games but threw it all away, now they're running their business into the ground with stupid mistake after mistake and showing no sign of changing course.

40k is a great setting but it needs freeing from GW to reach its full potential.

i might cry. nobody wants to play with meeeee tonight. kuhraaiiii
