[cheap] Gaming matt for epic demo game

By heychadwick, in X-Wing

I am going to run a demo epic game for Mace 2014 with my Tantive IV. I wanted it to play it on a nice matt, but I am not a rich man. I bought a table cloth and had some spray paint.

Not too bad!

I have what is essentially bedsheet material with star patterns on it that I keep rolled up in my gaming bag. I pull it out if we don't have a proper board or gaming mat to play on. It does the job nicely in a pinch.

2x 3x3 mats from the fabric store. Like $6-7 total.

Can use each seperate or together.. And it's under $10 for the epic size play area. Hard to beat for the price

If I can iron out the creases, I've got it beat at $3 for the table clothe. :)

Looks pretty good to me.

If you want smaller 'stars' get a stiff bristle tooth brush load it with white paint and draw your thumb back acors it (practice on some old cloth first), you get a veyr random splatter.

I used to use it for mud on 1/35th vehicles and blood spray on GW stuff.

If you want to be super cool, put the cloth over a glass table with a light under it and punch small holes through the cloth at random... proper twinkling stafield!

once you've ironed it just keep it rolled in future.

we used to have 200 or so green gaming felt flocked mats for regional tournaments at GW and we soon learn that rolling them was the only really good way to store them.

I had an old tooth brush that I was trying to get that effect with, but it wasn't working. I think it was the cheap craft paint I was using, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, rolling is good. I'm thinking of cutting it down to size a bit, too. I've found that the GW grass matts don't actually need to be rolled, if you got those GW ones. I should've gotten them when I could've as they were a good price.

I'm thinking I might be able to tape it down on the underside of the table to get it to straighten out.

This sounds way too much like someone who has a significant amount of experience with blood spatters. :P

So yeah i'm quite used to putting paint and brushes to unintended uses :)

when i wore the zombie one out one haloween i bound my left arm up under half a shredded shirt sleeve so it looked like i oly had one arm, the sleeve ends dripping with fake blood.

I was later at the ATM struggling to use it one handed when this guy came up and said 'hey mate are you ok?' and was genuinely concerned i'd been in some terrible accident.

I said 'oh its ok, i just cut myself shaving' and he wandered off confused. :)

In my spare time I run nightclub events, often with a theme so I make up lots of silly costumes!
