Z-95 swarm with Feedback array... phantom counter?

By arcdodger, in X-Wing

I see tons of discussion about using deadmans switch on a Z-95 to make a piloted cruise missle, but not much buzz about feedback array......

this seems like a viable counter to phantoms.... a swarm of Zs flown straight at the phantom then activate FA at range 1.... no arc nessacary ....1 damage per ship, no dice roll.

7x Z-95+feedback array

they would be predictable after the attack, but 4 of them WOULD kill the phantom, no questions, no dice.......

would it work? is it a good idea?

How often can you reliably get within range 1 of something that maneuverable?

Sure, you kill the phantom if you get into range 1 and they don't dodge back out to 2-3, but can you finish off the rest of their list with 7 wounded PS 1 z-95s? What about 5-6 if you lose one or two before they get to suicide?

I think the key is, the Feedback Array isn't a one-use option. You could use it a couple of times before it gets suicidal. It's an interesting tactic, but how workable it would be, is another thing. Funny thing is the article didn't mention the damage suffered by the user, only the ion token. 14 points per ship for a couple of sure hits is something to ponder.

7 range 1 bubbles, spread out like a mine field in front of the phantom may be hard to dodge.....

it is just an idea. I fly imperial and am not likely to jump ship to a new group of scum for some shiny new gadgets.

True, but then all the Phantom has to do is hop into range 1 of the edge Z-95, hammer it with 5 dice, and then have the rest of his squad finish it off before it gets to activate the Array. Wash, rinse, and repeat six more times.

So, 4 Z's with FBAs is 56 points. Are you willing to devote more than half your squad to killing a 35-40 point ship?

depending on how the ig2000 pilots shape up it could be viable. Maybe 3, for 42 and a decent amount of space for other ships +upgrades

People seem to immediately be jumping to the conclusion that you have to throw it onto Z-95's. See, I'm thinking it would be much more scary and viable on big thick ships like the Firespray. Why? Because even if you screw up and bump yourself into ships that you move after you can still shock your surrounding enemies with the ability.

Yep, big ships could be the ticket, less impact from the ion token and more hull points to soak up the blow back damage. Though it is still debatable whether or not you would just be better shooting at the ships you can see than shocking every turn.
