Might be fun to put proton rockets on Maarek Stele...
Stop the TIE Advanced hate =D
I love the TIE Advanced. I have 4 of them. I'm pretty much crazy for the Imperials. I even gave away both of my X Wings from the core sets that I bought.
Vader is one thing. I don't think there are too many people who dislike him. It's all the rest of the Tie Advanced that are not worth it. Tell me you won a list with a normal Tie Advanced and then I'll be impressed.
I've used Vader and won tournaments with him.
Worth is highly subjective. I have loads of fun flying the Advanced. It may not be the most efficient ship, but it still can be a blast to use, even if that "blast" is the ship getting blown up. ![]()
We created a "custom upgrade" for Vader that our group can use in casual dogfights: 3 points, you get +1 red dice. Vader only. Problem fix!! no more hate!
Threads like these will be funny in the future when everyone is clamouring about how broken TIE Advanced are.

I won a few matches with a Tempest TIEadv.
To be fair, that same list had Whisper ACD and Echo ACD in it.

Hopefully that won't happen.
Good for you for trying this argument again. But I'd rather get involved in a land war in Asia than get pulled into this again.
I view the Tie Advanced like some of the German tank designs in WWII...a good idea in concept but fatally flawed in execution.
When building a list that is competitive, a Tie Advanced may not make the cut; but when playing crafted senerios, the Tie Advanced can add a certain flavor.
Not EVERY piece can be a winner (**ahum, cough, cough** Y-Wing) and as more waves are produced, the natural inclination is to make the new models distict by outclassing the previous waves. The Z-95 being a nitch exception, not the rule.
By the time Wave 7 or 8 comes around, the X-Wing will be extinct.
This is one ship I want to like. I am old school. Only ships from the
movies. Probably won't win any competitions tho.
The Empire really needs a good, survivable middle-weight ship to stick in lists and hold their own. The TIE Advanced was supposed to be this.
Empire players right now have a choice between cheap flimsy fighters and Expensive wunderwaffen. Even though they have nice aces they're still flying tin foil fighters (as you watch Amazing Ace soontir fel get that one roll in the entire game that sees him one-shot and you loosing a third of your list).
Defenders and Phantoms are nice heavy fighters, but the former is a serious investment for the performance and the latter is too fragile at the wrong time.
In theory the TIE Advanced is supposed to have some nice shields and decent capability while still being in the affordable range. Sadly only Vader is really worthwhile, and after you fire a missile load, if you wanted to have 2 attack dice you regret not taking two TIE Fighters for the cost of that Advanced, which isn't as nimble either.
FFG has hinted in GenCon that there's something coming for the TIE Advanced. I vehemently disagree that it will be a TIE Avenger title to give it +1 attack. I'm holding on to my Four TIE Advanceds hoping that, when that fix does come, I have exactly the kind of fighters I need in the middle of an Empire list to either hold the line with my TIE Fighters, or serve as beefier wingmen to my TIE Defender ace.

The fix will include systems upgrade for TIE Advanced.
Edited by z0m4dA jar to save money to buy another one? ;-)Another TIE Advanced thread...and another dollar in my TIE Advanced jar!
Rightly so! The Advanced is a truly resilient fighter! :-)
Something like that. I add a dollar to the jar whenever this stuff pops up. Right now the jar is currently financing a 3rd TIE Advanced.

I like the idea z0m4d presents for a title granting a system upgrade.
Though illicit upgrades could be fun to.
+1 attack or adding a cannon brings it to cheap defender level
Making it cheaper or adding missiles/torps/bombs brings it to bomber level
Crew, turrets, or astromechs would be silly.
Edited by CununculusVader can't boost without an Engine Upgrade
okay, give him that and now he has every possible action (except cloak) in the action bar, AND YOU DON'T NEED TO PUT PUSH THE LIMIT ON HIM!!!!
But yeah aside from Vader he makes the only reason to field a Tie Advanced. You pay a premium on him (naturally) and he is worth every point. The firepower of a Tie Fighter is easily boosted by both Target Lock and Focus, and put something like out maneuver or opportunist on him and he is a monster. The others it's a different story not too many builds with those for the amount of points you spend. Proton Rockets may help (a little).
as for Tie Advanced hate, I think there is more Han Solo hate than Vader hate. It is almost like the entire forum has given into Jabba's bounty on him, whoever can put Han Solo on Ice gets 90,000 creds.
Edited by MarinealverI think Vader+Predator+EU is a beastly ship. Expert Handling is a good option, as well.
Opportunist on Vader does not really work because of his high ps, outmanouver or predator though both work well.

Y-wings are boring, with really only a narrow handful of effective builds, but those builds are effective. And the X-wing isn't going anywhere; the chassis is a little overpriced in comparison to the B-wing, but it has some of the best unique pilots in the game and access to one of the more powerful upgrade slots.
"Accuracy corrector"....seems over the top....
Vader+outmaneuver+engine upgrade makes a great flanker/phantom hunter at 36 points.
"Accuracy corrector"....seems over the top....
How so?
"Accuracy corrector"....seems over the top....
Not really any ship that can take it has three attack already, without TL or focus your looking at 1.5 hits anyway with either of those it's much higher.
Two guaranteed hits is hardly game breaking, two crits would of been.
I just ran a 4v4 free-for-all dogfight with new players and I had an absolute blast using Vader.
He's one of four ships that get randomly assigned to each player, along with Luke, Jake, and Lorrir. Each player randomly gets one of the following: Shield upgrade, hull upgrade, ion pulse missile, proton torp and randomly gets an EPT: Marksmanship, PtL, Outmaneuver, and Expert Handling.
(for purposes of the dogfight, everybody can use everything.)
Vader actually wound up with PtL which meant I was pretty much focus, evade, BR every single turn where I thought I was going to get engaged.
I recommend trying this mode out sometime for a quick casual fix.

Y-Wings have more use and utility now than TIE Advanceds do. This is because of the viability of the turret slot, particularly the Ion cannon, and I doubt we're going to get Blaster Turrets forever. The wrong turret could be easily abusive (as we see with the pancake fleet), but I digress.
The TIE Advanced on the other hand gets flexibility out of ordinance, which is universally bad. Proton rockets can help them but the letdown here is that ordinance is one shot. Once its gone, the TIE Advanced is just a more expensive TIE Fighter. Vader is sustainable but unless Stele can somehow boost his attack to do more reliable crits (ideally without using an action), he's still among the poorest choice of pilots in all of X-Wing. Which is unfortunate, because he was a lot more lethal than Farlander in the sims.
I don't think X-Wings will go extinct. Not with them being the flagship playing piece of the game and with so many pilots. I see the X-Wing being the best balanced craft of the game and always a choice when it comes to rebel player options. The B-Wing is intruding on their turf but the B-Wing is also slower and at agility 1... which makes them very vulnerable to future weapons systems. Say if they ever stuck a proton bomb in a 3ATT missile and fired it at a B-Wing.
