Nids got screwed the only viable build isn't even in the codex you have to pay again for a digital supplement that makes gargoyles decent.
The whole digital product costing near the same as physical copies is another reason I quite.
GW or as i like to call them Gone Wild is all about the $$ now to heck with their games or really anything that made them relevant up untill now.
40k players, you are safe now. We're here for you.
Shouldn't you be making the Epic Podcast for the Kessel Run right now ya lazy Git!??
Edited by Wolfe4086I am an old Rogue Trader days player for 40K and Fantasy. For me I hated the fact GW would routinely discontinue models and cut them out of codexes or in the case of Squats(Never Forget) cut them out of the 40K universe. Also the pricing policy of 40K is another big problem where GW routinely over charges for models and lacks play balance anymore. It is hard to find a decent group where it is not about power playing but fun. Last games I played were a few 5th Edition as between the two I was working in Iraq as a contractor. Now I'm in the moving process from Canada to Fort Worth Texas so after listening to the Heroic 28s Kessel Run podcast my interest in X-wing was piqued. Now I just need to make some time to get out and play.
Wolfe: DynCorp?
Wolfe: DynCorp?
No I was with ITT Systems. I did 2.5 years in Fallujah 06-mid 08 and then 1.5 in Ramadi from mid 08 to 10.
Ah, thought you may have been moving to Texas taking a permanent position with DC since they are there.
I contracted first with DynCorp in 2005 but left at 6 months and went with Blackwater until 2008. We had a place at Spook Central near Abu Grahaib but went countrywide. Prior Gulf War I was active duty.

I have played 40k for a while. I remember Blood Angels Orange and cardboard dreadnaughts. I haven't thrown dice in anger since 2007 but I have, admittedly probably stupidly, started up a CSM force recently. Also bought both Eldar Armorcast Titans off eBay on a frivolous whim because I had the money and the models are gorgeous.
Although I don't very much appreciate GW's recent business decisions, never once has it made me consider not playing again, because regardless of what GW does to their rules, they can't confiscate your models, and your gaming group decides what you play. Plenty of people still use 2ED. I picked up X-Wing because I like tabletop gaming, scratchbuilding models, and am a SW fanatic. The fact that it's much cheaper only makes it all the more justifiable.
The reason I don't play 40k is the same reason I haven't really played any XW; I don't know any players or have my "own" FLGS - yet. If any group in Ottawa notices a guy randomly show up on X-Wing night, it might be me.
Edited by SunCrusherEpic, Warmaster, Blood Bowl, Necromunda, BFG... there were some really good games made by GW. Sadly, the company decided to streamline everything into its two games, and the quality of those games has been deteriorating for a long time. I remember the switch from 5th Fantasy to 6th. It wasn't as good (in my opinion) but it was playable. From 7th to 8th killed it for me. Fantasy 8th Edition is actually an insult to gaming. I played it three times and shortly thereafter sold my elves for good.
I'm never coming back to WHFB - nobody should pay that much money for such a bad game. EDIT: In fact, if I need my WHF fix, there's always Discwars...
I don't mind LotR SBG line, and I like WotR in theory, but have never played it. SBG isn't amazing but it's fun.
Non-GW games I have experience include Warmachine, which is a much better game rules-wise but I don't like the universe. I also play Infinity, which is in need of a new edition (which it is getting) to flatten out some wrinkles in its rules.

They had lots of IT there in country. Our IT guy wore body armor and had a MP5 hooked to his vest. Malware can be vicious ![]()
You can still find those out there enjoying the better GW offerings like BFG, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, Space Hulk, etc...
I was rather miffed also that they shut down GW Historicals. I also play Gladiator, Legends of the Old West, and Trafalgar. Luckily I had those entire lines of books before they closed. I've seen the Gladiator book up for sale now for as high as $700!
Around here we fill the GW sucking vacuum with the likes of Xwing, various Western and Zombie games (sometimes even Western-Zombies games!), Dystopian Wars, Muskets & Tomahawks (Freck Indian War skirmish), and Saga (medieval and crusades skirmish).
well me and my warhammer 40k group still conteniue to play 40k ( over 20 peopleso far ) we do paly x wing, zombiecide and Dust Warfare aswell ;P but thx for the welcoming its nice to be a part of the x wing community and i always loved the star wars franchise. what should i say ? i grew up with star wars and 40k ;P
Heya, first post!
BIG Lord of the Rings: Strategy Battle Game player here.
It's a shame that the system doesn't get enough attention. GW has created some fantastic models!
The rule system is streamlined and easy to play. So many memorable moments are created thanks to the vast array of scenarios (something X-wing needs MORE of in my opinion).
However, It's virtually impossible to find opponents, which is why I've picked up on X-wing, although the community has grown since the new Hobbit Trilogy. ![]()

Lord of the rings never grabbed me but i know alot enjoy it, sadly i dont think GW will keep the licence due to the hobbit not giving the same sales as lotr did, i can see them dropping down to two core games given recent financial issues.
GW would be better off going back to their roots.
make 40k a skirmish game again, small unit conflicts with optional rules sets for mass battles.
that way its affordable to get into the game again.
if anyone played rogue trader, you will remember that 1 standard unit was like 300+ points, so 1000 point games were between 2-3 squads. and then you could custom craft heroes. that's what the game really lacks.
there was no turn limit, because the games were fast moving. now we have to move sometime hundreds of models in 1500-2000 point games. they sacrificed play and fun for making us buy new rules every 2 years, then you need to buy $1000 worth of models to field a basic army. that's ridiculous.
I was on the fence when 6th edition came out, when they did the 7th edition ****, im out.
just a quick note. I play orks. I just got me first codex since 4th edition. yes, the only codex that spanned 4 editions of the game. most of the armies got a codex for each edition while orks got past buy.
I can go on and on, but I wont. GW is in my past, I hope others come to see the light as well.
GW has truly effed up badly the last decade or so. Interestingly this time period roughly coincides with Tom Kirby being the CEO of the company...
I can link my falling out with gw to,not just because of, the time Paul Sawyer(aka FatBloke) left the white dwarf team. Everything just started turning sideways. 3rd edition 40k for me was a huge step backwards, codexs became nothing but armylists. Fiction the thing that helped hold models and gaming together as a hobbey for me were gone. I had to relie more on white dwarf now I just personaly hate the new format. Don't get me wrong the monthly 1s not that bad but the weekly sales picth makes me wonder what happend to my first proper hobby magazine.
So I'm a 40k guy as well, not ready to completely abandon ship but on the downward slope towards ditching it all. It's is exponentially too expensive and with a career, wife and dog (no kids yet, even!) It is beyond difficult to find time to model, paint and find games. Mainly the first two, games aren't too challenging to find. They just last FOREVER. I can play 3 xwing games in the time I play 1 40k game. While it stinks that some kits are out of print I will take xwing over 40k every day of the week.
Fly casual fellas
I stopped playing way back in the middle of third edition and I've been tempted to go back many times, but I just don't recognize that monstrosity of a game anymore. 2nd edition fo' life, yo.
Yeah, i am really sad that there is noone playing LotR here, because i totally would play it, even if it costed me a bit with GW prices, you don't need that much to play it.
2nd edition was horrible for me. Vortex grenade ? Virus grenade...
Edited by DreadStarThe length of 40k games has gotten silly in thirds and forth 1k games took an hour fast and fun, fifth was slower because of the way wounds were handled but it wasn't until 6th it became truly dull and sluggish for me, then I started playing x-wing and rediscovered what fun a fast simple game can be.
Our group seems to be taking a break from WH40k at the mo. About the time 7th ed came out, I don't think anyone has even bought a copy. Still getting the 40k fix from Space Hulk, we still have the 2009 edition.
If you are still in love with the 40k universe but don't want to push hundreds of 28mm models around, FFG may have the thing for you:
Death Angel, WH40K Conquest, Horus Heresy, Chaos in the Old World, Blood Bowl Team Manager, Relic, Disk Wars, Chaos Marauders...

The problem with GW games is the same that sadly FFG will suffer as well over time. For FFG I am rarely worried since I am not familiar with the SW Canon material but it seems to me that there is a limit on the number of new ships that will come out. For companies like GW and FFG to stay in business they have to keep creating new miniatures for players to buy. If not over time players will have all the models they need and will no longer need to purchase any more. This is what killed Babylon 5 Wars and the Star Blazers miniatures game. ![]()
That's half true Wolfe, if the pool of players doesn't grow, sure, you need to release more and more models (see GW right now), but if you are growing, you want to grow more, and that doesn't require you to release like crazy because the new players will also buy the old stuff if your game is well balanced (and since upgrades are shared, you may just want a ship... for the cards). It requires to have a community that plays, support the game, gain trust from your players, and try to balance the game.
Once you hit the top sure, but that's when you release 2.0 and mix things up, withouth going full GW. You never go full GW (inflating point cost to sell more models, completely destroying your game in the process to also sell Big models).
