40k refugees and newbies...

By VanorDM, in X-Wing

I am relatively new to both games (less than a year), and find that I cannot devote enough time to the 40K. The appeal of X Wing - besides tapping in to my love of Star Wars - there is no painting (unless I want to do a repaint), and the games do not take five hours to play one game. I will continue to do both, but my emphasis is more on X Wing right now.

Not a 40k refuge here, first miniatures game for me. Started playing because of family now I'm looking for ways to get my local community going.

@Hobojeebus

Exactly. I actually would get a kick out of building a diorama of a Tau Air Defence Battery except it would be like 300$ for kits. If I'm going to lay out dough like that I need to something more than display it, I need to play with it. And if there's no quality game for it, then why the hell would I pay anything? Cycle Complete!

Cheers! Agreed that GW should go under first. They said it themselves "Purge the Unclean!" :D

It gets worse if you look at kits just meant to be displayed, equal detail equal material used yet so much cheaper.

Happy to welcome all the 40k vets...and their painting skills, which I eagerly await to see more of

This always puzzles me. I have some really quick and easy paint jobs on my x-wings, just changed some colors and washed the models, and I get compliments on it a lot at x-wing events. 40k wise, it would be the base standard for painted.

This always puzzles me.

Well consider what you did compared to what most everyone else has done.

40K? Real men play Epic!

That's not epic, that's apocalypse. And well, if you enjoy throwing dice just for the sake of throwing dice, sure... it is awesome.

It is sad that the current state of 40k is mostly because GW doesn't playtest, and they tried to make it more "apocalypse" like. But i guess if you are strictly a model collector, 40k is still a nice hobby, most of their model and plastic kits are good, overpriced, but good.

I like to play with the money i spend into one hobby, so quitted because 6th was crap, and tau release sealed the deal for me (i played tau).

down with GW!!!!!!!

im done with them, after 25 years of playing 40k I have had enough!!!!!!!

there are plenty of games out there well worth my time and are more fun:

x-wing

battletech

(looking forward to robotech tactics)

game on, fly casual my friends

DreadStar: That's a Warmonger Titan for Epic 40k. Quite a different scale than apocalypse.

I am one of those 40K players. A couple of years ago two things happened. 1: X-wing came out, and 2: I had my first son. I am not going to say anything about whether or not 40k is a good game or if I think GW is over greedy for my money. I will say I just can't afford to play that game. It is sooooo expensive when compared to X-wing.

On the other hand as much as I love the 40K universe (and I really do, probably my 2nd fav Universe). I love Star Wars even more.

Finally while 40K is a good game. X-wing is an awesome game. I have never played a table top mini game that even comes close. Not even Attack Wing.

Oh, dumb me. Apologies then. Epic 40k is awesome.

I suppose my story started somewhere around when GW released a set of five metal Vampire knights (Think they were called Blood knights). Not only were they rather hideously designed, they also cost almost the same as a Baneblade tank. Around the same time they released plastic Empire Greatswords that only contained 10 models yet cost far more than the equivalent amount of older metal models.

I decided to boycott GW as much as possible while still continuing to play. To that end I started up an Imperial Guard army using only German World War 2 tanks, vehicles and troops. Worked out great and far cheaper to boot. Of course with 7th edition I've lost almost all interest in the game. No one expected they would release a new set of rules so quickly and worse, they didn't even fix the most glaring issues with the rules.

They don't care about the rules they've said it themselves they sell models, but I and I suspect alot of people don't have a reason to buy overpriced kits if the game isn't fun.

I'd love to see a ffg version of 40k, but first I want to see gw go under.

I'd rather see GW reform their ways. They have a great IP that really works well with the miniwargaming community, and sure the models are expensive and probably always will be, but the game can be really fun when it's working smoothly. It's a much more complete game experience when you build your army from the ground up.

There is absolutely potential to make 40k work again. I'd like to see the issues underlying my move away from 40k fixed, but fixing it would probably be a very difficult and long process (you try and balance 20 some-odd factions!). I'm not going to hold my breath.

Picked up 40k back in college, but I stopped playing because no one near me played, and it was cost-prohibitive to update my armies to the new editions, if I only played once, maybe twice a year. I've still got my Kroot Mercenaries army, but intending to sell it.

I love being able to take an hour, drop a couple minis on the table, and go to town, even if it's just against myself.

Epic 40k was just about the best wargame I have ever played.

Then GW pulled the plug:(

That's not epic, that's apocalypse. And well, if you enjoy throwing dice just for the sake of throwing dice, .

Bite your tongue! That is 2nd edition Space Marine (Epic40k) Adeptus Titanicus Titan Legions.

The model is a Warmonger Imperator titan. Just the Holy Grail of Epic.

Even 40k was dynamically better when you introduce the old order counters used in Epic.

Sad but funny how gw droped any game they had that was any good. For what they have now that isnt worth the artbook it is printed on.

Bloodbowl, Mordheim, Necromunda, Epic, warmaster (was that the name?)... even the latest iterations of LotR were pretty good lol.

Yeah, it is really sad.

I'm going to take a different tone to these 40K expats:

(I kid, of course)

I did 40K for a short while in the late 90s, but was a GW-thrall by way of WFB in the early 90s.

Edited by Mikael Hasselstein

Specialist games apart from gorka morka were generally better than the main three, at my store there were always people eager to play mordheim or gothic but the store manager Tim didn't like us playing anything but wfb and 40k so he banned them, we wrote jervis and he personally called the store and told him he can't ban specialist games.

A few weeks later he cancelled veterans night out of spite so we left on mass a couple of staff quit over it, he didn't keep his job long once profits slumped.

Of course a year later the company dropped them altogether but by that point I had no where to play locally anyway.

40K refugee. The game finally ended up being whoever can afford the most FW stuff gets to win. Unbound armies broke the game beyond repair.

Walking through a new FLGS with SWMBO (She Who Must Be Obeyed..."swimbo") we watch a game of X-Wing in progress. SWMBO (knowing my fondness for Darth Vader) remarked that I should play that game.

Then I discovered how (relatively) inexpensive the game is, how clear the rules are, and how quickly FFG responds to FAQs and customer questions. Good looking minis that are easy to convert/repaint are a serious plus.

40k here, played it for 20+ yrs, can't say I'm finished with it but I am taking a break. Games-workshop specialist games were always my favourite, like necromunda and gorkamorka and warhammer quest... But nobody in my area will play them and gw won't support them. So instead I play 40k and have 50 000 points of orks and 25 000 of marines, just put two other large armies up on eBay.. I'm getting sick of each edition requires larger battles, more troops on the table to be competitive, so when I finally talked a friend into playing X-wing it was so nice to carry my army in one hand. Plus the rules are so clear and concise. Just wish the community was bigger here for it, I am trying to build it but not looking like it's going to take off :(

ecliptor i am in the same boat in my area but i am slowly but surely converting 40k and fantasy players over to X-wing hang in there and be persistent you will soon see things change.
