I think I went way overboard . . . .

By Mesrob, in X-Wing

Guys, I need your help. I have been more of a collector of the X-wing miniatures game than an actual player. I have only played the game a few times over the past year. Ever since the birth of my second son, who is 11 months old, I have had almost no time to play. Collecting the x-wing minis has been a sort of therapy for me, due to the lack of sleep and stress of work, and the kids. Having said that, looking at my collection, it just dawned on me, am I actually going to ever play with all of this stuff? Here is what I have

Rebels:

1 Millenium Falcon

8 X-wing (I bought eight so I could possibly field all eight named pilots. What was I thinking?

3 Y-wing

3 A-wing

1 HWK-290

3 B-wing

1 Rebel Transport

6 Z-95 Headhunter (Swarm?)

2 E-wing

Imperials:

9 Tie-Fighters (because I was planning on playing epic one day)

3 Tie-Advanced

2 Slave 1

5 Tie-Interceptors

2 Lamda Shuttles

4 Tie-Bombers

5 Imperial Aces Expansion Packs (That gives me a total of 15 Tie Interceptors. Again, wanted to run all five of the named bloodstripe interceptor pilots)

2 Tie-Defender

3 Tie-Phantom

Based on your play experiences, which extra miniatures would you consider unloading? I was planning on selling off some of these to pay for future expansions. Based on your experiences with a 150 point game, or epic play, would I still have too many? I know I went way overboard, but if you could let me know which x-wing minis I have, that will probably never see play, it would be much appreciated. For example, do I really need four Tie-bombers? Eight X-wing figthers, really? I am going to have more time to play in the future now that my little one is older. Thanks for your time everyone, please feel free to poke fun at me. Look forward to your responses.

I think maybe you have:

About 7-9 too many interceptors (6-8 is fine), about 2 too many X-wings, and 1 too many Advanced and Tie Fighter (you can only field 8 of anything I think).

Other than that it's fine to me. You have a full collection, but you can pretty much field anything you want.

Based on my experience, you can usually get $9-10 each for small used ships. If you sold off 10ish ships, you'd have $100 to get a VT-49, 2 Rebel Aces, and 2 YT-2400s.

Of course, at that point you might want to offload one each of your A-Wings and B-Wings...

The opportunity of cost of selling your minis is so low you might as well keep them.

Although you do have wayyyy too many imperial aces, you could get okay prices on those.

I'd buy some Royal Interceptors in a heart beat.

Man do I know where your coming from. I've only played about ten 100 point games this year and my collection is up to 76 smalls, 10 large, and 4 huge ships. And with all the new releases coming out I know my collection is gonna grow about another % 50 or so. **** you FFG!

I don't get to play with all of mine either, there is just too much to do when you are me. I try for 1 game session a month and don't usually manage, but as my kids get older I can play with them, and in the meantime I really like owning these toys.

Just looking at this I think, man, maybe I do want another normal interceptor because I've only got the cards to put out 3 alphas, then I realize I'd just be doing the same thing. :)

Epic play.

How many core sets did you buy? Compared to the rest of your ships, your TIE Fighter count is actually low.

I collect a lot of the ships as well, but the game will be around for a while, and I figure eventually when it goes out of print, I'll have everything I need for epic battles for a very long time. :-)

As the others have said, you can afford to drop some of the interceptors. I'd also suggest having a chat with your wife and seeing if you can organise a gaming night once a month where you get to go off and play games for 2-3 hours.

Thats about the same as with me. I've got 2 and 4 year old boys that LOVE Star Wars. Unfortunately its gonna be a long wait before they are old enough to figure it out.

All that and only 1 HWK? The mind boggles. :)

You are the only guy I know (not that I really know you, bu hey) who can fly 5 Royal Guard Interceptors. There are losts of great list that spam them. My fav is give them all VI, but the most popular is PtL. Granted 5 is still 1 more interceptors than you need.

You do have tons of stuff. But you are equiped to play some awrsome Epic games.

Lastly you are also in a very good position to bring your friends into the game without them having to buy anything. For a long time when I played X-wing I provided all the ships for both sides. I still do that from time to time.

That's a big reason I have a big collection. I had the ability to build up a substantial amount of ships, and I also managed to put together Plano boxes of all the stuff to play (tokens, templates, dice, damage deck, asteroids). Enough so that I can run 3 tables at the same time. In other words, I have enough stuff that I can have 1, or 3, or 5 friends over and have all of us playing, just using my collection. Granted, not everyone can fly a falcon, or a tie swarm, but as long as everyone is willing to build lists/take lists that make good use of the various ships I have, I can pretty much run a tourney on my own stuff.

Teaching, and introducing others will give you a chance to use them not just as you do, but in the future when your friends buy in and get a core or two, and a few other ships. They might even turn into people you can sell your extra ships to, or who will buy the new stuff to add to the group's growing collection.

I feel really bad showing my cards here but yeah here they are... Most of them are New in box and I find really Really good deals on Ebay. My thought behind having so many ships is to resale some later on but also have large game nights and have supply's for everyone. Its also fun to do some custom painting.

I have almost the same, but a few more A's, HWK's and Z's

You clearly need more defenders.

You guys are all crazy I am still trying to get one of every expansion, but hey I just started in June. :)

Needs more Y-Wings...

Seriously, holy carp! I'd suggest nixing a couple X's and some Squints. IIRC, Imperial Aces is out of stock most places currently, so if you could piece together a couple complete sets of that, you could probably get some good money for it.

I can see how having a large collection is therapeutic but if your not playing then why need to get the new stuff? Most of us are just plastic junkies that are caught in FFGs rat race looking to try new things or staying competitive but your not addicted (yet) so you may just be better off watching and waiting to catch a sweet deal when you see them on ebay in a few months only since if you enjoy having so many ships why give them up to go buy full price on others?

Not saying you shouldn't just my two pennies and if you still wanna sell then I'd suggest selling some Imp Aces hope it helps!

Impressive....most impressive

but no need to feel bad theres plenty people here with large fleets

Seconded. Be prepared to offer up a night for her as well; my wife and I each have one night a week where we get out of the house and get some grown-up interaction, while the other one takes care of our 7-month-old. It helps a lot.

Going forward, I'd aim for only getting one of each new ship, rather than the plethora you've nabbed in the past. The game is way cheaper if you only buy what you actually need for a list you're actually going to play at an event (even if the event is just casual games in the garage).

Sorry this wasn't the advice you asked for, but hopefully it helps. :)

I dont see a corvette in that list. why?

looking at some of your posts and collections...

I feel much better now
