Astartes Assault Shotgun

Astartes Assault Shotgun:

RoF S/3/5

Full Auto Burst:

"If successful, the attack scores a hit normally. Furthermore, each Degree of Success
scores an extra hit.
"

Scatter:
"... fired at a foe within Point Blank Range, every two degrees of success indicates another
hit ..."

How do we combine those abilites?

  • 6 Degrees of Success -> 5 hits from Full Auto (capped at 5 for this gun) + 3 hits from Scatter
  • Or do the burst and the scatter need their own degrees ('eating them up' each on its own)? 6 Degrees of Success -> 5 hits from Full Auto (needs 4 degrees) + 1 hits from Scatter (needs another 2 degrees)
  • Or mutual exclusive?

That . Don't stand in the front of shotgun's barrel at point-blank.

The truth of the matter is that the rules are not excessively clear on it. If you think about it in terms of what it represents (full auto = more rounds of ammunition landing on target; scatter = ammunition effect wherein additional hits are gained because more pellets / other scatterable particles land on target) there are all sorts of convoluted things you could come up with. However, it's best not to think about it too much, and keep it clean, simple, fast, and fair.

6 Degrees of Success -> 5 hits from Full Auto (capped at 5 for this gun) + 3 hits from Scatter

Exactly that.

The Scatter-rule was changed in the errata for Only War, so that it now reads:

β€œAt Point Blank Range, this weapon gains +10 to hit and deals +3 Damage.

At Short Range, this weapon gains +10 to hit.

At any longer ranges, this weapon suffers –3 Damage.”

One could argue that the Astartas Assault Shotgun is a different weapon then the ones the Guard has access to, but it is a good fix for a somewhat broken and overpowered rule.

One could argue that Only War is not the Deathwatch.

True, but when the rules in an older system doesn't work, I think it's a pretty good solution to look to a newer incarnation of the rules.

This is a dangerous path . Only War Errata allows using of Fate Point to re-roll Psychic Phenomena rolls. Do you really want this for your group Librarian?

Plus, you could say the RAW fits better to the Deathwatch game anyways, thematically.

This is basically "300, the pen&paper game" in a sci-fi setting with Marines as the Spartans, with lots of special rules that let you get into crazy, reality-defying heroics. See the "1v1 on a Bloodthister" thread. I'd say an 8x(2d10+3) point blank shotgun fits in nicely with the rest!
