I usually try and name list with descriptive if boring names so that i'll remember them like 'royal guard shuttle escort'
The whole "list name" thing
I hate how the term "developing list" became a thing. It's just a mea culpa for here's a list I think is awesome but haven't tested yet. I cringe every time I see it (I don't mind list threads in general).

My pet peeve is threads titled "let's talk about ___ " or "let's discuss ____". Yeah, what about it? There should be some sort of point or direction in the title especially because the first post usually has a specific question or idea anyway.
Hey, feel free to slap crazy titles on you lists all you want. But stop the denial. Just to be part of the community, you mean like conformity? Same bandwagon different tune IMHO. Facebook, planking, photobombs, ice bucket challenge, etc.. same conformity wagon.

See I read it as "here is a list I'm playing but I'm not completely happy with it yet, can anyone suggest tweaks I can test that will improve the list but also suits my play style."
It's fine to call that a developing list. It's a list you are generally happy with but unsure exactly what specific changes you need to make.

I might be in a similar boat as you. I'd rather see a "here's my list for a tourney coming up, what would you do differently" or a "Here's how this list did last night, and I'm not satisfied with it's results - what would you do? Sort of threads.
Coming up with new, creative, or innovative lists and then talking about them online seems less productive than playing a list, then talking about how it did or didn't meet your expectations. Experience discussion are as important as theory crafting.

I think squad names are fun and a way to remember what exactly you have put together. In my house we play A LOT of x- wing, we have a dry erase board listing current builds we are all flying, along with a hall of fame section for builds that go undefeated for two week stretch. When a squad starts to get up there in wins it gets pretty exciting to see how it fairs against H.o.F. Squads and those squads are flown purely by the pilot who developed that list. The names have also become very clever as my kids have taken to this game quiet fondly.
Bombers had a lil lambda (tie bombers with a shuttle)
Hurp di derp (three named squints, all who have the "ir" sound)
Bee's knees (four b-wings with FCS)
Elephants in the room (two firesprays with a flanker)
Hodge podge scum (X, Y, B, and a HWK)
It has become a knotch in the belt for any developing list to get a win over a H.o.F. List. And naming them has become a personal affair and gives identity to the character of a certain squad. Just my two cents.. Cheers!
Coming up with an amusing name for your list can be fun, and at the end of the day, that is why we play isn't it?
Personally, I'm currently waiting for the Decimator to be released so I can find out if "Big girls have more fun!" (A Decimator and 2 shuttles) ![]()
At the end of the day though, I don't expect anyone else to automagically know what I mean by a list name (although in the above case they can probably guess that it's an all large ship list).

I hate when people post something they haven't seen, so their text gets all inflated like they invented something no one else has ever seen and they've become the Force's gift to X-wing... and really it's just a flippin' repost!

I hate when folks talk about a list, like Fat Han or whatever, but don't actually describe the list.
Some of us don't live online to catch all this stuff.

I guess I'm off to start another one of those then...
I originally started using that convention with a specific form (hopefully catchy name, build, why each piece of the build, strategy, variants followed by discussion) to the postings. It caught on but the form didn't stick with it; posters started using it as another "what would you change" or "what did you think" thread.
If you see a "Developing List:" thread with my name on it, you know what you are getting. I had hoped we'd get more list discussion than "play this instead".
And without it we wouldn't have "Scarlet Cowgirl" and "Baron's Focus"...time for some thread necromancy.

No offense meant, I did mean to put a qualifier in there that it wasn't the original concept that bugged me, but the proliferation and subsequent bastardisation of the concept that bugged me.
Just go about your business as usual. I enjoy your threads.
Edited by ID X TYou, ah... Do you want to tell the 101st Airborne that "The Screaming Eagles" is "cutsie"? ![]()
We're human. We name things. It's what we _do_. The Talumidic tradition (that the Christians took with them!) is that "name all the things" was basically the first task god gave Humanity. And for most strains of modern Paganism, naming things is to exercise some measure of control over it.
And that's just 3 religions I can think of off hand. If your specific objection is the the specific names, all I can say is that tastes differ. And I pun.

See, I call mine "We are Shuttle Bom-bomb and we are here to make you think about death and get sad and stuff."

No offense taken! Mimicry is the sincerest form of flattery... There's no such thing as bad publicity...all that.

You mean The Screaming Chickens? They aren't even airborne anymore, they're air assault.

Well that's an improvement ![]()
You guys have convinced me to name my list. It consist if two Decimaters. I will name this list The Double D's ( * ) ( * )
I personally think that naming your squadron is half, or more, of the fun in building a new list ![]()
Some of mine are as follows:
KCCO (Kanos' Crowd Control Offensive)
Howling Star
The Lion & The Mouse
The Runner's Escort
Of course, I don't expect people to remember my list names but it's fun to discuss with my buddies. They all have names for their lists also and as long as the ship composition stays the same, we keep the names.

You mean pukin buzzards, but hey, nobodies perfect ![]()
Yes, they have always been known as the pukin buzzards.
FWIW, I like the names, usually.
I know you need a quick easy shorthand reference... but am I the only one who is a tiny bit irritated by how cutsie people try to be with these?
Now get off my lawn.
Put some pants on will ya?
Actually what I'm really holding out for is this, perhaps the greatest piece of art FFG ever made:
