Is the Emperor a true god?

By Mother Superior2, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Demons are created in the warp by human emotions. As I see it anyway. The amount of devout prayers, rituals and belief combined with the Emperors mind would make me believe the Emperor has an immortal presence in the warp.

What are your views. If the golden throne is destroyed, would the Emperor persist?

In ancient greece the gods would have their statues. Athena had a big statue in the parthenon in Athens (who would have guessed). If you would destroy it it would be seen as a horrible dissaster but i don't think people would see it as the death of athena. Isnt the golden throne a simmilar construct?

The old Realm of chaos: Lost and the damned book for warhammer/40k mentions the Emperor's mind existing as a entity in the warp known as the Starchild. The emperor would persist in that form i guess, but his physical body would almost emidiatly die, the wounds he suffered in the fight with Horus were quite severe.

So the Emperor's spirit endures in the warp, but the imperium is a gonner at that point. Without the Emperor to control the beacon of the Astronomican navigating the warp becomes near impossible.

It also gets mentioned in the fluff that the golden throne is slowly breaking down, and nobody in the imperium has any hope of fixing it if it would permanently break down.

The Golden Throne is a cybernetic life support mechanism that amplifies psychic abilities, rather than a religious idol meant to be venerated. If it would be destyroyed it would probably end the "life" remaining in Him on Earth.

There was an interesting snippet in GW's Inquisitor game about the Emperor being caught in a limbo between realspace and the Immaterium (also mentioned in the TT core rulebooks), with the Golden Throne being the one thing that keeps him anchored in the real world even though part of his conscience has already departed into the Warp. In this context, it could be a grimdark irony that the Golden Throne is not a vessel of rescuing the Emperor, but a prison that keeps his essence trapped.

What happens if the Golden Throne breaks down for good? Maybe the Emperor dies, his soul not being powerful enough to withstand the disintegrating torrents of the Warp (Codex Eldar mentions this is what happens to the vast majority of human souls). Or maybe his soul finally snaps loose from that dessicated corpse, free to roam the Warp only to get gobbled up by the hungry daemons of the Immaterium. Or it manages to persist long enough to actually be reborn in a different body, or possess someone for a similar effect. Nobody can know for sure, but I think all of these possibilities are quite interesting. :)

"The Golden Throne works", one said, his voice aged and cracked. "The Emperor's life can be sustained indefinitely."
"His soul lives on?", another inquired, his long, sharp nose protruding from under the lip of his hood. "It is not an empty husk?"
"It is not", the first confirmed. "The Emperor has ascended to the next plane, but the link 'twixt body and spirit remains strong."
"Then it can be brought back", suggested the third, a young woman whose flowing white hair spilled from her hood and down to her waist. "The Emperor need not suffer this hideous eternal life in death."
"We cannot rush such a thing!", the first voice hissed. "What if the spiritual link were severed? What if the person brought back was not the man we once knew? Changed? News of the Emperor's ... ascension is already widespread. He is being revered as a god already on a hundred worlds. In this time of rebuilding, we need a symbol. The Emperor has shown us the way. Anyway, who would believe the Emperor had returned so soon? It will cause a civil war more devastating than that of the fool Horus, and even now we have yet to start counting the cost of that. No, better that this knowledge remains hidden. When we pass on to join the Emperor, it will die with us."

As to whether the Emperor is a "true god", I suppose that is merely a matter of how you define a divine being. If you measure it by his power, then I'm sure the answer would be yes ... but then the same definition would apply to a lot of other beings, and I'm sure that would be called heresy. ;)

Call me a heretic. Might it be possible to create a 'pact' with the devine being known as the Emperor? For any of you guessing I'm not a GM. Not at the moment. Wondering if my psycker could enter a pact with the devine. My psycker is on the boundary between damnation and eternal glory. I want to destroy the Dei-Phage.

What if I would have a pact with the Emperor himself? Self-sacrifice is not a deterent. Look up my short story on this forum. Post comments. Grammar, cannon, plausability. Anything. Want feedback. I know it's up to my GM but he likes it when players add to the story, do their own research. Not just 'Give me a bigger gun' but adding more flavour. Food for thought. He wants to tell a great story, just like me.

When i see the posts on this forum lots of it is all about armour and toughness and stats. Where is the romance? :P

Define "God".

For all intents and purposes, he is a god. But it all comes down to defining what "god" means.

A lot of more religiously-minded folks would maintain that unless you are omniscient and all-powerful, you're not a "true" "God".

But what makes a god is really in the eye of the beholder. Any sufficiently powerful individual or entity can be dubbed a god.

Indeed. We have this Abrahamic based idea of God. But Gods weren't always like this. They were fluid and pluriform. Lets not just think in ultimates but in flavours. As I see it the Dei-Phage isnt almighty and immortal. In the sense that the meaning of a word could be lost. Its there but if noone knows the meaning is there still the word?

This is getting very metaphysical but it's important for my campaign. I very much enjoy your contributions.

Somewhere in the warp, the daemon primarch Lorgar is going: "See? see? I Was right! I told Him so, but nooooo, "i'm not a god, Lorgar. you must not worship me Lorgar. You suck Lorgar! I always liked Roboute more than you Lorgar!" aaaagh! Who's god now dad? Moowhahahhahaaa!!!"

Psykers do that when they become sanctioned, it's called soul-binding. I still highly doubt you'll kill the Dei-Phage, he's millenia old and works for Tzeetch, if he didn't already plan for psykers then he's not doing his job.

Look up a thread called Musings of a Madman for some further ideas about this.

As for romance, it's understated in the system as it is generally any rpg, it is what you and the group are willing to make of it.

I have to admit I immediately thought of Soul-binding myself. ;)

As for the thread, here we go! I think it's an interesting read with lots of different ideas.

As you will read in the Horus heresy books ( specifically the Salamanders ) Each of the 20 primarchs created had ONE of the emperors traits...The Salamander primarch Vulkan had the emperors ability to self resurrect everytime he died. Each time the resurrection would happen faster ( much to his brother night haunters chagrin as he tried and succeeded in killing him a few hundred times but he kept coming back.) if the golden throne was disabled or destroyed then the emperors essence would go into the warp fully while it recreated his body and he would rise again like a phoenix from the ashes.

The golden throne was never meant to be cyber anything...the golden throne is a redesigned webway portal gate from the old war. The emperor was using it to try and find a way to get into the webway and use it to circumvent the warp entirely for long distance travel since the emperor knew full well the dangers of the warp and its denizens. (one of the benefits of owning and having read over 90% of the black library books :D ) All of what ive said is in the Horus Heresy series.

The last part was also mentioned in the HH art book. What HH book was it also mentioned in? Unless you meant the art book.
