Let's Talk about X - Rebel Aces

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing

This looks fun. Fly Dantels right at the opponent with Biggs alongside, a wings blocking.

Should be a nearly guaranteed 10 damage from her as she'll likely get both torps off before she and Biggs are killed. A wings block and pot shot , then clean up. Might not be all that competitive , but should merc any elite 3-4 ship builds I would think , and would be fun to fly.

Unnamed Squadron (98)

Nera Dantels — B-Wing 26

Deadeye 1

Advanced Proton Torpedoes 6

Advanced Proton Torpedoes 6

Recon Specialist 3

B-Wing/E2 1

Biggs Darklighter — X-Wing 25

Prototype Pilot — A-Wing 17

Chardaan Refit -2

Prototype Pilot — A-Wing 17

Chardaan Refit -2

Personally I don't go for the Advanced Torps, not because of the cost, but because of the Range 1 restriction. Even as a "turret," enemies will find it relatively easy to get out of Range 1 of a B-wing often enough.

I highly recommend regular Proton Torps on her.

Nera D is there to help with Phantoms. Give her Flachette Torps and Munitions Failsafe and I see you putting a Stress on the Phantom every turn. Would it be better if she would go before the Phantom? Yes. Does it still help box in the Phantom to where you can deal with it better? Yes. What's the general strategy on fighting Phantoms? Try to box them in and not let them de-cloak everywhere. Their only green manuevers are a 2 bank and 2 or 3 straight. That means no sharp turns for the Phantom. I mean, they will want to turn around eventually. If you are putting a Stress on them each turn, what are they going to do? It also makes it a lot easier to guess where they are going to be that way. How is this a bad thing?

Also, Nera isn't in a vacuum, either. Work her in with someone who has R3-A2 or Tactician. Or....another Flachette Torpedo. Get two Stress on a Phantom and they aren't able to cloak again until they remove that stress. If you are able to keep putting a stress on a turn, they won't be able to re-cloak at all.

In fact, Nera with B-wing/E2 and Flachette Torpedoes could cause double stress with just her. Great vs Phantoms, but not bad vs. anyone else, either.

The only thing I question is whether to take 2 FP's in case you get "lucky" and actually hit once.

There is also the idea of having someone else stress out the Phantom before they re-cloak (lots of ways) and then having her use a Proton Torpedo on them after they can't re-cloak. Or...even an Advanced Proton Torpedo to be just mean. Boom goes the dynomite!

I have to admit that I've been thinking of something that is against the grain of the meta. Gemmer Sojan w/ Expose. Is it better to use a Target Lock of Focus instead of getting another attack die? Yes. Are there other ships, crew, etc that can give you an action, Focus, or TL? Yes. Does this mean you can actually use them together for syngergy? Of course, so don't give me the "yeah, but Focus or TL is better".

So, in Range 1of an enemy. You can either just fire with 3 dice and have 4 green. Or.....Fire with 4 red dice and have 3 green (plus whatever bonus you can get from other people). If you are able to dish out the Target Locks and Focus from other sources, you can have a nasty little A-wing that can stay defensive or go on the offensive for only 2 extra points (4 for Expose and -2 for Chadraan Refit). I mean, 24 pts for a ship that can go from 3 red/ 4 green to 4 red/ 3 green is pretty darn nice in my humble opinion.

OK, maybe not "amazing", but neat enough to get mileage, especially just to see people's faces when they see it on the table. I swear, I think this guy was made for Expose.

I think Advanced Torps needs to be used with Deadeye for Nera. Just to have the ability to say...."Oh, target of oppurtunity at range 1.....BAM!"

And to riff off of that heychadwick, think about pairing a Gemmer Sojan + Expose alongside a Jan Ors HWK. All of the sudden you have a 5 red - 3 Green A-Wing...

Woah! I've never really lookekd at the HWK much before. I just got one and haven't really used it (got it for the cards). That's really nice. In fact, I can see using a Jan Ors HWK and a bunch of A-wings.

You can give her Squad Leader and she can give Gemmer an action. He can do his own Target Lock or Focus.

Just quickly threw this list together:

Gemmer Sojan + Test Pilot + Expose (26 pts)

Jan Ors + VI + Ion Turret + Nien Nunb (32 pts)

Dutch Vander + R2 astromech + Ion Turret (29 pts)

Tala (13 pts)

There is a ton of synergy there, along with great crowd control. The damage output is a bit low with two Ion Turrets, but that will make it much easier for Gemmer to close to range 1 for the super kill, and it makes the Tala much better as well since it can also close to range 1 for three red dice. Not to mention Dutch passing Gemmer a target lock for his 5 red dice!

Hmmmm.....Jan Ors can also boost the Z-95, which it needs. Heh....it could even boost the Y-wing to be the same as an X-wing in the front arc.

I do worry about the lack of offensive power, though. Maybe it is enough to have Jan boost everyone. Maybe Gemmer doesn't get the extra attack die. It can go to the Z-95 or even to Ion Turret, for when you really want to ionize that one ship.

I like the idea of Squad Leader, though, to give that extra action to someone to help their chances. You will want to make your hits count. Gemmer can get 5 attack die with a TL and a Focus! Nice.

Oh, you forgot Chadraan Refit:

Gemmer Sojan + Test Pilot + Expose + Chadraan Refit (24 pts)
Jan Ors + Ion Turret + Nien Nunb + Squad Leader (33 pts)
Dutch Vander + Ion Turret + R7-T1 (31 pts)
Bandit (12 pts)

R7-T1 makes Dutch more manueverable with Boost and the chance to dish out even more Target Locks.

The advanced proton torps suck because they are hard to use, needing a target lock AND a focus AND range one. Nigh impossible if your opponent sees it coming.

But with nera, suddenly range one is massive as a 360 arc, she can just fly beside or into a squad.

With deadeye and recon specialist she can not worry about target locking and also doesn't have to use two turns, action economy or push the limit-stress to set up her shot.

Taken together, a 360 range one shot with double focus on a ship as durable as a b wing will make for some definite hits.

Farlander is so OP it is scary.

Hi Bubbles,

Thanks for the video. I'm also primarily an Empire player. I think I may have played rebels outside of the home maybe ... once?

Still, I've got Rebel Aces on pre-order, and I haven't really a clue what I'm going to do with it. Thanks for the tips. I also think that HWK is kind of a neat ship.

I only play rebels when I have a new player that wants to fly them, I'll play the hated terrorists lol...

But I dont play them well.. lol.. I want the new player to do well and win if possible, so I fly them easy and give them a good fight, but I may forget to do an action or take an action that doesn't help me much.

I love the imperial ships.. everything about them.. the look, how they fly... I'm just a fan.. always have been..
