Has anyone actually tried this before? :D

NO one has 4 tie advanced so how could we? :P

Once the "Advanced fix" is in I will want to break them out a bit more often.

Actually some people do.

Seriously. This list is so bad though. Might just kill someone from laughter.

I have 4...I've flown them with other odrnance.. they do alright, but wouldn't stand up in competition I think. I only game with some friends, don't do tourneys yet.. they are fun though.

I've got three so I'm almost there...

I could drop the second Tempest for a pair of Academy Pilots.

May try this for S&G sometime.

Hey I have 4! :D

Here's my House Rules for the TIE Advanced to make them more competitive.

Tempest Squadron Pilot

  • Cost reduced from 21 to 19
  • Can equip the "TIE Advanced Targeting Refit"

Storm Squadron Pilot

  • Cost reduced from 23 to 20.5
  • Can equip the "TIE Advanced Targeting Refit"

Maarek Steele

  • Cost reduced from 27 to 24
  • Can equip the "TIE Advanced Targeting Refit"

Darth Vader

  • Cost reduced from 29 to 28
  • Can equip the "TIE Advanced Targeting Refit"

TIE Advanced Targeting Refit

  • Title. TIE Advanced only.
  • Cost: 0 points.
  • After you perform an attack, you may acquire a target lock on the defender.

I'm hoping they do something like an Aggressor title upgrade where the advanced gets a full 2 atk turret.

Just give it free Systems slot and call the card "TIE Advanced X2" or "TIE Avenger"

MJ. How did you figure out those costs exactly for the pilots? Isn't vader still pretty unused/balanced?

I'd run it.

I actually like flying a TIE Advanced on occasion, and not just because of Vader. They seldom take much heat until late game, and if they can survive until there are only a few ships left they can be pretty hard to take down.

Of course, they have trouble killing anything, but you can't have it all...

(unless you fly a phantom)

I'd fly that

I'd rather run 4 tempest with rockets and failsafe.

Hopefully there will be an 'Imperial Aces II' with Proton Rockets in the box ...

and an Advanced + hot fix stuff ... alongside with a Gamma-style bomber.

The TIE Advanced is 4 - 4.5 points overcosted relative to a TIE Fighter. So I took off 2 points (Tempest Squadron Pilot), and essentially added a free Fire-Control System. So it's a soft 4 point buff. You could probably get away with 3 points off the Tempest, but the range 1 Missiles (Cluster Missiles and Proton Rockets) are very good with this combo. Set up your TL at range 2/3 with a primary weapon attack, and then light it up next round at range 1 with TL + F.

So:

  • PS2 Tempest Squadron: 2 point reduction.
  • PS4 Storm Squadron Pilot: 2 point reduction, plus another 0.5 points for a discount on the PS progression, which I have been doing for almost all the pilots.
  • Steele: 2 point reduction, plus another 1 point to bring the cost for his PS / ability back in line.
  • Vader: only a 1 point cost reduction since his ability is fantastic.

I strongly dislike the idea of adding a system slot. Its a completely 1-dimensional fix that won't even work: you'll be forced into purchasing Accuracy Corrector, and even then the ship won't be worth its points.

Vader pilot is not competitive. There were 4 at GenCon Nationals on Thursday and Friday, but none of those squads made it to Saturday.

Edit: with the above balance changes you could run:

4x Tempest Squadron Pilot + Proton Rockets + Fire-Control System

1x Academy Pilot

Try it out and see how it flies. It's not hyper competitive, but it is fun.

This would be very intriguing the Trick of course is making sure all 4 get their rockets off otherwise they are in trouble but if you can get all of the rockets off and if you got lucky and had TLs up it could be devastating

Yes but how did you get just a 1 pt reduction for vader then? Even if his ability is awesome. You're still paying point of ps for a ship with two dice.

I would definitely at least give it a go. Sad that you can't really pimp out the advanced anymore. Cough ept slots? :P

Now that accuracy corrector has been released I don't think systems is as good of a fix anymore. It would be one dimensional. But then. I think accuracy corrector was a dumb idea in the first place. It means we basically won't ever have a 2 attack ship with systems.

Im sure you guys have noticed but I'm only partially impressed with ffgs creative and game design. There are some really dumb decisions they made that I really don't agree with.

Because I cut the cost of the generics by 2 points. If I cut Vader by the same, then you would never use the generics.

Is that the case with all generics? =/ I dunno. For 18 points, I might consider using one if i need a tanky support ship

Steele just needs a Tie Avenger.

3 attack and boost, otherwise the same as an x1.

What if the avenger title gave the advanced HLC instead

I'd be happier if it gave 1 more attack and like... A beam weapon slot for a tractor beam.

A tractor would be like: action: Put a tractor beam token on an enemy ship at range 1 and within your firing arc. Ships have -1 agility for each tractor beam token on them. Remove all tractor beam tokens at the end of the turn.

I have flown against 4 Advances. They can be annoyingly tough to kill.

I'd be upset at that because it doesn't make sense canonicaly.

The TIE D had an ion, but the Avenger did not.
