I may actually sign up for this one. Never played before.
I just need to figure out how to use Vassal. I have so far only been able to use it to view a replay. I can't figure out how to use it to actually play a game, and the tutorials I've seen are rather lacking..
I've tried signing up for the Website but keep getting an error when I go to activate the account 
A Few Maneuvers has a really good tutorial, that is how I started, however nothing makes up for actual experience. Most folks out there are willing to show you how to play on Vassal. Just ask.

As long as you can start a game online you'll be able to find someone who will show you the ropes.
I won't be entering, since I'm trying to get my dissertation done in the next two months, but I'd encourage anyone who's even curious to sign up.
The absolute worst thing that can happen is you get some experience using Vassal to play decent matches with a generally positive and casual community of X-wing players; does that sound so bad?
