First Time Poster - Build Queries

By NiallJC1984, in X-Wing

Hi folks,

I'm new to the community and the game. I've only played a handful of battles using the starter set and have picked up an A-Wing and an E-Wing from my local store (stock is a problem!)

I'm keen to build up to 100 points (Rebels) and can easily get that with the X-Wing from starter set and the above ships, I'm just not sure how best to build up that combination.

Any suggestions?

I'm thinking of going with:

E-Wing: Etahn, R7-T1, Outmaneuver, Advanced Sensors

A-Wing: Tycho, Homing Missiles, Push the Limit

X-Wing: Red Squadron, R7

Anything you'd change? Bearing in mind I'm limited to the cards supplied with the above ships :)

Enjoying the game so far, just so many possible combos!

Got the following on order to expand my collection:

X-Wing

B-Wing

TIE Advanced

TIE Fighter

Thanks in advance for any advice with respect to my A-X-E build :)

PS Apologies for any daft questions, can't help that I'm new! For example I never know how many upgrades to give my ships, it's hard to know where to stop!

Welcome to the game!

I'm not a rebel player usually, so can't help with builds.

But there are some great resources I will recommend.

If you are an android user, there is the X Wing Companion app. It lists all the ships and cards. If your fellow players are OK with it, you can proxy some of the upgrade cards. Try befor you buy kind of thing.

Look online for "Yet Another Squad Builder." Its a good online tool for creating lists. As the name implies, there's others out there too, which I bet are good.

Finally, dig deep into this forum. I think about the first three pages of posts are from the last couple days. So the deeper you go, the more list discussions you will run into.

Good luck and Fly Casual.

We'll I am am an Imperial player first up, I just bought the ships I loved to begin with. I assume you have done the same.

Saying that after playing the game for 9 months, I have found I love Intercepters and have three of them, the bombers and advanced have seen less play. The last wave has brought defenders and Phantoms, things have just got better and better.

I would recommend trying to pick up imperial aces/rebel aces, welcome to the addiction.

Thanks guys,

Yes - my wallet is already reeling!

I'm not a fan of this forum as there's so many posts and so little stickies! So I'm really sorry if all my questions have been answered before!

Anyway I'll have a look through :)

I use Squadron Builder, it's the first one I found on google to be honest but I'll check out 'yet another' too :)

I'll hopefully get some Rebel player comments on my build soon too!

If it helps I also love the A wing, it's an iconic ship but sees very little play, I think things will change with Rebel aces, lots of new options, so if you are a rebel man and an A wing fan make that your next purchase.

And you get a B Wing to boot

Here's a thought:

Corran + AS + Outmaneuver + R7-T1

Luke + R2-D2 + Expert Handling

Green + PtL

The Green is the annoying pest. Corran is the big hammer that can lay out a lot of hurt. Luke is the ship that is going to be hard to kill. Has two ships working at PS 8 which is pretty good and all ships will have some action based position adjustment available. May consider switching Astromechs or shuffling Elite Pilot skills but for three ships I think you could do much worse.

Thanks for your input :) unfortunately until I actually receive the XW expansion I won't get Expert Handling :)

I'll have a play about and see what else I come up with. Might just run what I've said above and see how it plays!

Oh ****, I missed that when I thought I was following thing correctly. To be honest, Expert Handling wasn't even my first choice which actually would be Draw Their Fire but that comes from the Falcon. That's still just 2 points wrong allowing you to make other choices instead.

If you're playing casual games (kitchen table, or FLGS), if you ask nicely and explain that you're just getting started, your opponents will most likely be fine with you proxying upgrade cards until you get a better feel for what kind of loadouts work for you.

A builder like https://geordanr.github.io/xwing has all of the card text as well as sources, so if you find something you like, you can plan out what to buy next.

Tournaments are a different matter; you need to actually have all of your list, but it doesn't sound like you'll be attending those just yet.

I could proxy, but I certainly feel I've got enough at the moment to hit the 100 points anyway so don't see the point for the moment in proxying things.

I'll just make up a few A-X-E lists and try them a few times :)

Picked up a phantom today, so might think about using some of the cards with my AXE squadron :)

Looking forward to running the squad on Wednesday!

I'm liking this if you can get the right upgrade cards:

Wedge

Push the Limit

Engine Upgrade

Corran

Fire Control System

Tycho

Push the Limit

may be a few points off, but you can always tweak. Welcome btw!

Oh, also, Yet another Squad builder is probably my favorite as Squad builders go.

Few tips:

Ordinance (missiles and torpedoes) generally isn't to effective, you can usually get more stuff worthwhile for those points. Tie Advanceds are currently the weakest ships. They aren't bad, but they are overcosted by about 2-3 points (except Vader), and don't really fill in their own unique role. Also remember to practice squad, and know it! And welcome again!

A-X-E build sounds like fun.

For your E (and most expensive ship) I would fly corran Horn with FCS.

For your X I would fly Luke with R2D2

For your A I would fly Tycho with PTL and a missile.

Build it and fly it. Have fun trying new stuff. If you are not sure about the rules make an inquiry over in the rules forum.

And welcome to the forum.

Fly Casual.

Thanks folks!

Sadly that last build is a few points too high. I only have Homing Missile, Cluster Missile and Concussion Missiles in my cards so far, each one would put it above 100. Only 2 points to spare so might put a pilot talent on Luke/Corran instead :)

Thanks for tips though everyone!

I was trying to build an Imperial list but with only Phantom and two TIEs from starter, even with upgrades I can only hit about 77 points!

That was my bad. I should not list build when I am at work.

Try:

Corran with FCS

Luke with Expert Handling and R2-D2

Tycho with PTL (or Outmaneuver, your choice)

100 points

Haha thanks, but don't have EH yet ;)

I'm limited to Starter Set, A-Wing Exp, E-Wing Exp and TIE Phantom Exp.

I'm thinking:

A - Tycho, PTL, Homing Missile

E - Corran, FCS

X - Biggs, R2-D2

Plan: E-Wing is pretty nippy with Barrell Roll and Evade etc and 5 wounds so can hopefully look after himself.

Keep Biggs and Tycho together and use Biggs to soak up fire while Tycho launches off missiles.

With X-Wing moving up fast, I should be able to keep the A- Wing close by with PTL and Boost....

That's plan one... Appreciate your comments haha, remember I'm a newbie :) but hey at least I'm trying to think!

Ok I have some follow up noob questions: apologies if these should be posted elsewhere.

1. Shields, do crits go right through them and affect hull or do crits just remove a shield?

2. Can I swap target locks as an action if I wish to change target?

3. If I remove stress with a green manoeuvre, can I then go on to carry out an action?

4. Do face up damage cards (crits) actually count as damage? i.e. If I have a hull with 3 points, and I have two damage cards and receive one crit, is the ship destroyed? Or is the crit an effect that doesn't necessarily affect the hull?

Edit: Bloody hell, Corran Horn with FCS seems very good!

Manoeuvre, perform a target lock, attack, gain a target lock, at end of round, attack with a target lock!

Ouch!

1. Crits just count as a shield hit.

2. Yes, you can change target locks.

3. Yes.

4. Yes, they do.

Thanks!

Ok next query :)

If Tycho has a stress token, does he still have to perform a green move to remove it like most pilots? Thanks to PTL, looks like after the first turn he'll be restricted to green manoeuvres?

Thanks!

Yes, he does. That means that even though he can perform an action while he has a stress token, he cannot perform red maneuvers.

1. When it comes to damage [crit] results work just like [hit] results until it is time to actually DEAL cards. If there are still shield tokens when a [crit] resolves the shield is lost.

2. Yes.

3. Yes.

4. Yes. When you have cards, face up or down, equal to or greater than your hull value your ship is destroyed.

And don't forget FCS will trigger on Corran's second attack as well so you'll have a TL when you're done. You'll sometime see Marksmanship with him because that EPT affects all attacks the ship makes for the turn.

If Tycho has a stress token, does he still have to perform a green move to remove it like most pilots? Thanks to PTL, looks like after the first turn he'll be restricted to green manoeuvres?

IF Tycho wants to remove a Stress token he must perform a green maneuver or have some other way of removing tokens.

Now just because Tycho has Stress that does NOT mean he must take a green maneuver. As long as he does not perform a RED maneuver (K-turns) he is usually perfectly happy keeping Stress tokens because unlike other pilots he can perform Actions while stressed even if those will give him more Stress.

To put things another way Tycho can use PtL EVERY turn and generally be fine provided he doesn't try to use a k-turn. There are stories of Tycho carrying around a stack with a half dozen or more Stress tokens that he has acquired but not yet dumped off.

Does performing a green manoeuvre remove one stress token only, or all?

Thanks guys , you're all giving me great feedback!

Performing a green move will remove one stress token only.

Things I learned tonight.

TIE Phantoms. Wow, it danced around me. Echo at the helm, couldn't catch him in a decent firing arc.

Not sure I used Biggs to best advantage, he got taken out pretty quickly.

Was playing against Soontir, Echo and Vader.

Corran Horn was good, I enjoyed using him. And Tycho with Push The Limit was great, but I felt the missile was largely useless. Rolled four, one hit... Don't think I'll bother next time if I can afford another type of upgrade.

Man I wished the A-Wing could barrels roll!

2nd game tonight, I actually got to fly Imperials for the first time. Had my own Phantom, Whisper. Great fun. But made a mistake by K-Turninf at one point so couldn't cloak that turn. And of course, the dice took me out haha. Was against B-Wing, Wedge and a couple others. Took out one or two but learned a lot.

Mauler Mithil was fun!

That's game 3 and 4 under my belt. Great fun, roll on next time!
