Help me fall in love with Kath Scarlet

By zerotc, in X-Wing

I've only started playing recently, but my first goal was to make the Firespray my go-to ship. I've always been a big fan of the SW universe bounty hunters, and after listening to the Scum and Villainy podcast's interview with Doug Kinney, I was determined to learn how to fly this **** thing (Kath inparticular).

The problem is that I have no idea what I'm doing. I understand the general concepts of arc-dodging, jousting, and blocking asteroid exits; but what overall strategy should I be employing with Kath?

What I've been flying:

Kath Scarlet - VI, EU, Rebel Captive

Howlrunner

4 X AP

In the few games I've played with Kath, she gets focused early and tends to be eaten alive before doing much. And at the cost of almost half my list, I feel like she's not pulling her weight. I've tried gunner, predator, and recon specialist with decent success; but I'm reluctant to stray from the above setup as my anti-Phantom security.

I'm starting to wonder if she's the one... Anyone have relationship advice to offer?

Yeah...a lot of people have a tough time trying to fit Kath in their lists...honestly I'm not sure how to make her work, but you could try adding Rebel Captive and Marksmanship to her.

I'm having a hard time fitting her in too. I'll spend some time thiking about her and reply with a first Draft.

Do you have a Lambda Shuttle?

Do you have a Lambda Shuttle?

Yup! I have the following purchases, and proxying a few upgrade cards isn't an issue for my friends:

2 Core Sets

Slave-I

Lambda

TIE fighter

TIE defender

HWK

E-wing

Yeah...a lot of people have a tough time trying to fit Kath in their lists...honestly I'm not sure how to make her work, but you could try adding Rebel Captive and Marksmanship to her.

Do you think dropping VI and/or EU will be an issue in terms of lack of defense? I feel like Rebel Captive wasn't deterring my opponents much in the early game.

I'm really attracted to the concept of Recon Specialist and Predator since it's stacking offensive capability while increasing her durability; but then I feel like I'm opening myself up to Phantoms. I oddly haven't run into a single Phantom yet on Vassal...

The thing is, with Rebel Captive and Marksmanship, she can give out stress when attacking AND defending. Pretty nasty when it works.

See my topic sorprise, to see how I use her, it's totally shocking, greettings.

See my topic sorprise, to see how I use her, it's totally shocking, greettings.

Phrasing.

Me I tend to us the merc pilot the firespray is pretty deadly without pilot abilities.

Simple answer: Don't. In my opinion she has one of the worst pilot abilities in the game. It only goes off if you roll a crit and it misses. Garbage. For 1 more point Boba is a way better option. At least his ability is a bit better since Phantoms are a thing now. But for me, if I am using a Firespray its the Bounty Hunter. Yeah PS 3 isn't the greatest, but for 33 points you can run Rec Spec and a Siesmic Charge or Fletchette Torp which gives stress more reliably for the same cost of a basic Kath. Or you can just slap Gunner on the BH and put out a lot more fire then a stock Kath ever will.

Honestly the only reason to run Kath is for the EPT and PS 7. But if I can fit one more point I'll run the Fett. Trying to build a load-out around her ability is a waste of points.

Hopefully the Scum version of Kath will be a lot better, like Boba.

Here's how I fell in love with Kath Scarlet... :)

I use her with Rebel Captive and Predator.

Predator helps to reroll up some crits.

Phantoms do not like shooting at her, that's for sure...

I flew her to second in my first (and only so far) tournament:

Kath + Ion + Rebel Captive + Seismic Charges

Soontir Fel + Push the Limit + Stealth Device

2x Academy Pilot

Kath could stress, Ion, or both enemy ships, while being an all-around solid ship. Fel did his thing as a powerful flanker. And the Academies flew escort for Kath, blocking for her and providing additional firepower.

Here's how I fell in love with Kath Scarlet... :)

Now I'm in love... :D

This post helps me realize more and more my Firespray repaint will not be Kath, but something more Generic BH esque.

I've tried Kath a lot, and had fairly bad results with her. I do want to try her with Predator and Recon Spec, but I will need to find something solid to put with her, something you don't want to deal with end game.

Wow I really wouldn't use most of these cards, but at least this sort of forces the critical dynamic.

How is the Anti-Phantom package working? I feel like it should work in theory. Is it?

Ush. Heck. I do not like the limited upgrade slots on a firespray. =/ Bombs missiles and torps arent that helpful.

Maybe take out Howl, this lets you free fly the APs. Then you can add Ion Cannon and Prox mine. Prox mine should be really good to kill Phantoms. Just fly in front of it and drop the bomb on them. Bye bye.

How is this? 1pt initiative bid at PS9.

Prox good vs Phantom.
VI EU RC vs Phantom.
RC good against not being ganged up on.
Free fly the APs to try and force the Phantom into the Firespray's arc. Having the Phantom engage the Firespray is a good thing. RC will kill ACD. Flechette should also. You also should have initiative. If you don't take off Flechette and go up to 1 Obsidian for 98pts.
Free flying the APs gives you a lot more freedom to create board control area. Think of them as sheepdogs corraling enemy ships in the case of the Phantom or Ints. In the case of Fat Han, your list should do pretty well also. They take stress when attacking you and should have a hard time not being in your Firespray's arc. Having 4 Ties helps too.
Also, to make the list fly better, its a requirement to cosplay as a Red Mage and carry a rose in your mouth at all times during the tournament.

Search "Scarlet Cowgirl". It's about time to threadromancy that one anyway.

I'm thinking Lone Wolf + Rebel captive+ slave 1 + flechette is. Pretty good place to start.

If Kath is awesome in S&V I might have to switch factions. I play her a lot.

Looking at what they've done with the Fett, I have high hope for the Scarlett Cowgirl. If it's pleasing enough, I might buy a second Firespray for my very first X-Wing repaint.

scarlett cowgirl didnt ahve to deal with phantoms

Keep in mind that in S&V all fire spray pilots will have revamped ability's so try to learn how to fly the ship in general at that PS. for now use her as a full out tank with minimal threat so shes not targeted and also place a bigger target like a Tie-Defender. (btw Krassis is a better buy)

Somehow I'm 5-0 with this list

Kath 39

veteran instincts 1

mercenary copilot 2

soontir fel 27

push the limit 3

targeting computer 2

night beast 15

academy pilot

with Kath and soontir shooting at the same time I can take more risks, night beast is surprisingly durable and hangs out with the academy tie and Kath. I've been thinking about changing it bur it hasn't lost

scarlett cowgirl didnt ahve to deal with phantoms

But she's been packing the rebel captive for a long time. Now that choice is easier. And now she has 2pt missile that also stresses.

Not optimal but she can still hang.

I have had very good luck running Keth with Marksmanship + Gunner + Engine Upgrade. 46 Points.

With the Marksmanship you can turn one eye into a crit. If they cancel any crits they get a stress token.

If the shot doesn't hit you can re-roll with Gunner and the Marksmanship is still in effect.

I've had excellent results with

Kath

Echo

Veteran instincts

Advanced cloak

Fire control systems

2 academy polits

When using low PS tie fighters in Any list, they are fodder.

Get them in your opponents face.

Block with then to deny actions, and make him want to shot them over your more important ships.

Some games I'll try get them range one and keep other more important ships at range 2-3.

Usually it's hard to turn down that extra dice for attack, even though my opponent knows what I'm doing

Kath

Predator

Rebel Captive

-

Howlrunner

Determination

-

Academy Pilot

-

Obsidian Sq. x2

100pts

It got me 2nd place at a Nationals Event.

Keep flying Kath, she's not (broken) Super-Han, but she's far from bad.

I'm often running:

Kath with Recon Specialst, Predator, and Seismic Charge

Bounty Hunter with Recon Specialist

Alpha Squadron Pilot

The Alpha flanks while the Firesprays engage the enemy's main force, but try to avoid a straight up joust if it isn't favorable.

Most times the opponent focuses on one of the Firesprays, allowing the Alpha to get close (out of arc) and do some damage and when the Alpha gets focused on the Firesprays can risk a bit more and do damage.

Recon Specialists on the Firesprays really make them survivable and/or hit hard.

Versus swarms and mini swarms the rear arc and the Seisimc charge can really mess with their positionion and force them to barrel roll instead of taking focus.
