Falcon with 3PO v Flight Instructor

By Jobu, in X-Wing

So I was thinking, what are the numbers on 3P0 versus Flight instructor in a Falcon.

I created 2 scenarios one versus being shot 7 times/round and 1 where you shot 4 times/round. Take a look and tell me your analysis of the data.

Summary:
Evades is the number of evades you get above baseline Falcon each round and efficiency is it weighted by a 3 or 4 point cost. Higher is better in either case.

Item 1 Vs 7 attacking ships:
3PO Evades: +0.600 Efficiency: 0.2
FI 3+ Evades: +0.626 Efficiency: 0.15
FI 2- Evades: +1.613 Efficiency: 0.403

Item 2 vs 4 attacking ships:
3PO Evades: +0.625 Efficiency: 0.208
FI 3+ Evades: +0.372 Efficiency: 0.093
FI 2- Evades: +0.936 Efficiency: 0.234

Conclusion:
Kind of what you expect, FI gets better the more attacks rolled against it and 3PO is better the less amount rolled against it. FI is always better than 3PO against PS 2- both in numbers and efficiency.
Now we know how much better they are.
I am seeing a lot less 2- Imperial ships, but its not exactly rare for the rebels to have 1 or 2 in their lists.
I am also not seeing to many 7 ship lists these days.

Moral of the numbers: Stick with 3PO in the current meta, unless you are mostly concerned about a swarm.

Does anyone else have any other interpretations?

Then I started wondering what would happen if you stacked them:

Item 1 Vs 7 attacking ships:
Both 3+ Evades: +1.150 Efficiency: 0.165
Both 2- Evades: +2.004 Efficiency: 0.286

Item 2 vs 4 attacking ships:
Both 3+ Evades: +0.904 Efficicnecy: 0.129
Both 2- Evades: +1.327 Efficiency: 0.189

Clearly better on raw bonus evades, but point efficiency goes way down. I think this may be scary on Han or a Predatory Chewy, but you know Gunner.

Maths (I am really weirded out by 3PO getting more evades over baseline with 4 ships versus 7, but the math keeps working out when I rerun it, can someone check that for me?)

Item 1 Vs 7 attacking ships:
Without anything: 7 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade = 2.65 dodges
With Flight instructor (PS 3+): 7 defensive rolls * (3/8 chance of evade + .093 evade) = 3.276 - 2.65 = .626/4 = .15 evades/squad point
With Flight Instructor (PS 2-): 7 defensive rolls * (3/8 chance of evade + .234 evade) = 4.263 - 2.65 = 1.613/4 = .403 evades/squad point
With 3PO: (6 defensive rolls * 3/8) + 1 = 3.25 - 2.65 = .6/3 = .2 evades/squad point
3PO & FI 3+: (6 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade + .093 evade) + 1 = 3.808 - 2.65 = 1.15/7 = .165 evades/squad point
3PO & FI 2-: (6 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade + .234 evade) + 1 = 4.654 - 2.65 = 2.004/7 = .286 evades.squad point

Item 2 versus 4 attacking ships
Without anything: 4 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade = 1.5 dodges
With Flight instructor (PS 3+): 4 defensive rolls * (3/8 chance of evade + .093 evade) = 1.872 - 1.5 = .372/4 = .093 evades/squad point
With Flight Instructor (PS 2-): 4 defensive rolls * (3/8 chance of evade + .234 evade) = 2.436 - 1.5 = .936/4 = .234 evades/squad point
With 3PO: (3 defensive rolls * 3/8) + 1 = 2.125 - 1.5 = .625/3 = .208 evades/squad point
3PO & FI 3+: (3 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade + .093 evade) + 1 = 2.404 - 1.5 = .904/7 = .129 evades/squad point
3PO & FI 2-: (3 defensive rolls * 3/8 chance of evade + .234 evade) + 1 = 2.872 - 1.5 = 1.327/7 = .189 evades.squad point

Potential weaknesses in my math:
I did not factor in evades but since it a plus one, the numbers still hold.
I did not factor in focus, this can be signifigant (if people didn't use evade) as it will play heavily on how you use the rerolls on FI.
I did not do any math to assume a split squad (high PS versus low PS) that will definetly skew these numbers. I expect a fully split squad to make FI's numbers very close to 3POs.
I did not factor in the attack dice of the attackers. Its relevant for how long the Falcon will survive, but not for the amount of damage the Falcon will avoid taking.

I don't want to talk about range 3, my suspicion is FI will get much better.

I assumed no misses (everyone gets at least 1 hit). If you are throwing 7 2-die attacks, there is a very good chance at least one will come up with 2 blanks. This will lower the numbers/efficiency for 7 shots in favor of 3PO.
I have issues thinking Han, Lando or Chewy would ever put up with a Flight Instructor. Chewy would rip his arms and legs off and then throw him through the Falcons windshield (spaceshield?).

The correct answer is Falcon+C3PO+Flight Instructor. :)

What's the square root of the number of punches in the face you will earn by running the "Supermorbidly Obese" Falcon?

Better is us EU for the points and boost out of firing arc or range of as many ships as possible. For the same points as flight instructor I think that is much better point spent. Combine this withC3PO and MF title if your after a falcon tank. Fight instructor is just bad economy because for it to pay for its self your hoping for a bad roll and with the 1/3 chance you may roll better, better to avoid having to roll.

Engine upgrade, or R2-D2

I kind of like him on a Falcon

I've been using

Chewy

R2-D2

C3p0

Falcon title

Push the limit

I'm also quite looking forward to putting Ysanne Isard AND Flight Instructor on a Decimator with Kenkirk at the helm. After you take some damage, you get a free evade every turn and an evade die you can reroll.

I used flight instructor at regionals on my 3PO Falcon, ended up placing top 10. But having that said, the flight instructor didn't come in handy anywhere near as much as I would have hoped, I've since traded it for EU with very successful results.
