If they were males you wouldn't be asking to see their birth certificates.
They really aren't anything as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure FFG would actually prefer to keep them as mysterious as possible; that seems to be the Phantom's bailiwick, and I'm okay with it. The real issue at heart is one of language. Despite the fact that we have nearly twice as many words as the next closest language, English possesses no singular, genderless, third person pronoun - apart from "it," which isn't appropriate when referring to persons of questionable gender identity.
Before we progress to accusations of misogyny, please permit me to make an observation. Take a look around these forums. What do you see? I'll tell you what I see: a whole bunch of nerds (myself included) obsessed with being 100% right about every trivial detail imaginable. That's what we do here, we argue the facts over nonexistent people, weapons, and ships, because we like Star Wars and because we like being right. When you consider the conversations about Echo and Whisper in that light, is the knee-jerk reverse sexism really warranted? I don't feel like it is.
The most recent official documents refer to both pilots as female. Ignoring those to continue disparaging those who claim the pilots as women is wrong.
This has been one of the most heated ongoing debates of the forum because many of the members are sexist, not fact obsessed. This is no surprise. Misogyny in gaming culture is well documented.
You have recently made transphobic jokes about the subject in another thread. By all means, continue lying to yourself and everyone else by suggesting you and Vanor are just looking for the facts while frothing at the mouth rabid sexist and ignoring the most recent FFG official documents.
