Showing some love for Jan

By Red Castle, in X-Wing

Just finished playing through Dark Forces 2 and I now would like to use the HWK-290, a ship that I don't use often enough. Specifically, the beautiful Jan Ors.

JanOrs.jpg

Now here is some ideas I had for casual play:

Jan's heavy swords:

Jan Ors + Squad Leader + Ion Cannon Turret + Kyle Katarn + Hull Upgrade (38pts)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Heavy Laser Cannon (31pts)

Dagger Squadron Pilot + Heavy Laser Cannon (31pts)

The idea is pretty straight forward, Jan give one more dice and an action to one of the B-Wing each round for a 5 dice focus+TL attack. Meanwhile, Kyle is there so she can still have a focus for her attack or defense and try to ionize for some field control. Other option would be to switch Squad Leader for Decoy so the 5 dice B-Wing can attack earlier, but I think I prefer giving it an action at PS8 so he(the B-Wing) can either TL or reposition with Barrel Roll.

Jan's knives:

Jan Ors + Determination + Ion Cannon + Nien Nunb (32pts)

Knave Squadron's Pilot + Advanced Sensor + Engine Upgrade (34pts)

Knave Squadron's Pilot + Advanced Sensor + Engine Upgrade (34pts)

The strategy is to use the high mobility of the E-Wings combined with Engine Upgrade and Advanced Sensor to get in position and avoid flying in formation, which is not really necessary with Jan ability's range. Jan then boost the attack of the E-Wing in better position. Using Engine Upgrade to bank 1 before doing a 3 or 4 K-turn is a nasty ability that I plan to exploit. Mobility is key here, that's why I took Nien as crew.

Jan's turret:

Jan Ors + Squad Leader + Ion Cannon Turret + Kyle Katarn (35pts)

Chewbacca + Draw their Fire + C-3P0 + Lando Calrissian + Falcon title (50pts)

Prototype Pilot + Chardaan Refit (15pts)

Now this one is purely to troll. When you move with Chewie, you activate Lando and see what happen. If you get an evade, you use Jan's Squad Leader's ability to give him a focus if you get a focus, you give him an evade, if you get both, choose depending on situation, maybe even giving him a TL. You then attack with your 4 dice turret. We all know the merit of the Chewie+3P0+Falcon defensively, so if your opponent choose to shoot down Jan first, you will have Draw Their Fire to try and save her a crit. The Prototype is there to flank.

Jan's hunters:

Jan Ors + Decoy + Ion Cannon Turret + Nien Nunb (33pts)

Tala Squadron Pilot (13pts)

Tala Squadron Pilot (13pts)

Tala Squadron Pilot (13pts)

Tala Squadron Pilot (13pts)

Prototype Pilot + Chardaan Refit (15pts)

Good ol' little swarm. Just pick the ship in the better position and boost his attack to 3 and his PS to 8 with Decoy. Nien is there to help get rid of the stress and keep you somewhat unpredictable with Jan. Prototype is there just because I don't have a 5th Z-95; if I did, I would replace it for a 5th Tala and Nien with Kyle.

...

Pretty much what I came up with tonight. Any suggestions, or list including Jan that you found good.

Though I admire your love of Jan, in terms of game value I find it very hard to justify any more than the 30 points minimum (25 base + 5 ICT) you need to spend on her to be viable.

This is compounded further when you consider her ship is a flying brick in terms of manoeuvrability and her firing range is only 2 (admittedly it is 360°)

The only time I fly her is when I got YT hunting with Keyan + HLC + Opportunist, and even then it's still a hard play but throwing 6 attack dice is too much fun to pass up.

While her ability is powerful, as a support ship 30% or more of your squad points is a lot when you can only help 1 friendly a turn.

Yeah, that's why I said it was for casual play. They are more for fun than winning at all cost and I came up with them tonight without much afterthought. That's also why I don't use the HWK often, I also have trouble justifying the cost, especially Jan.

I don't think I would bring any of those to a tournament, although I think the last one has some merits, maybe with some tweaking here and there, or a fifth Z-95...

So, did you go light-side in the end, or did you embrace your inner darkness? No judgment; Maw had it coming either way.

I love Jan too, I love all the HWK named pilots, but I am in the don't over upgrade them school. Ion turret is all they really need, Jan's ability by itself is awesome.

Light sided. For some reason, I always choose the ''good'' side for the first playthrough in games where I have the choice like KOTOR or Infamous. If there is no choice like in GTA, no pedestrian is safe.

Probably right. But once I get my hand on Rebel Aces, I'll try at least once with Kyle and Squad Leader. Having her give one more attack dice AND an action per turn sounds too good to not at least try.

How about Jan's Wild Hunt?

Jan Ors (25)
Lone Wolf (2)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Kyle Katarn (3)
Green Squadron Pilot (19)
Predator (3)
Chardaan Refit (-2)
Veteran Instincts (1)
A-Wing Test Pilot (0)

Jan is sort of hard to play because it is a self stressing ship. Because of that it gets shut down by stress builds (which Wave 5 is bringing to the table in spades.) Jan is also the highest pilot skill which makes her the most expensive pilot. If you do put an upgrade on here it would likely be one that doesn't cause stress or require an action. Also because of the stress I don't see Blaster Turret being a viable option as it requires focus.

Playing Jan with LoneWolf would be a tough one. Keep out of range 1-2 to keep the reroll but in range 3 so you can give your bonus, maybe giving her Preadator also.

As for stress, Kyle crew will help a lot by giving her a focus everytime she remove her stress token. So even if she's being blocked or go over an asteroid, she will still have a focus. And if she is clear, she can use her action for another focus or a TL, or another upgrade ability like Squad Leader. Being sure to always have a focus even if block actually make the blaster turret a viable choice (except against Dark Curse, Jax and maybe Wes).

How about

Jan's triple X

Jan Ors + Ion Cannon Turret + Nien Nunb (31pts)

Hobbie Klivian + R3-A2 (27pts)

Rookie Pilot (21pts)

Rookie Pilot (21pts)

Try to attack the same target with Hobbie and Jan to give a stress and Ion token in the same turn. Again, boost the attack of the X-Wing in the better position, especially since Hobbie doesn't need to hit to give the stress token.

Up until this thread I always thought Jan Ors was a Scandinavian dude, "Yawn ørs".

What makes this all the worse is that I played Dark Forces religiously as a 5 year old.

Does anyone know how to get a copy of OpenAL? There's a Dark Forces source port (more like a TC) with mouse look and everything, but it requires some defunct software to run. Check it out here:

Up until I played Dark Force 2 recently, I thought her name was spelled ''Yan'', since one of my finnish friend is called Jan and it is spelled that way. It looks like it is spelled ''Djan'' after all, so there won't be any confusion anymore when I play X-Wing with that friend.

The sad part is, I won't be able to say to him: ''Jan is a girl's name'' anymore with a River tone.

I know a Norwegian named Jan (yawn), which just reinforced my belief that Jan Ors was some crazy viking, and not a Japanese woman.

I think that was just a casting decision. I know of nowhere else where Jan is alleged to be of Asian ethnicity.

I'm going off the fact that she flies a ship without a front view port as proof of her asianness. I have lived for a bit in China, and have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Taxi drivers making uturns across 8 lanes of traffic in the heart of Dalian. I watched mopeds cut off ferrari's near the heart of Zhabei. All those moments...

Certainly not at first, but I think it inspired the way she was pictured after that:

And we can't really reference to Dark Force 1, I mean... look at what Kyle looked like:

BeardlessKyleKatarn-PreTalay-SWDF.png

So by this account, I consider Dark Force 2 the first valid source for Jan Ors look.

That's not a fair representation of Kyle, since he doesn't have his patented facial hair. I imagine with a goatee he might look reasonably like his DF2 incarnation.

You mean like that:

x240-Gt6.jpg

Yeah, well, except for the fact that he now looks like he has an extra chromosome, that's not too far off...

And that's Jan in Jedi Knight 2 so... yeah, definetly with Asian trait now:

Has won me a lot of games. Won me a small store tourney

I stack a lot of focus tokens up to 8 then use on offense and defense. Up to 5 attack dice 1 range with Han and 3 more with blaster turret

But it's a bit easier when paired with flanking A-Wings, just don't desperately try to keep everything in the required range bands. :P.
