Have you guys ever played with completely random squads?

Like flipping all your pilot cards over, drawing pilots, and then flipping the corresponding upgrade categories over and fully kitting out your ships in random upgrades?

It absolutely makes you think outside the box, by not working with a point structure and by forcing you to use things you wouldn't normally use.

I know people who have done it and enjoyed it. For me, though, building squads is at least half the fun of the game, so playing random lists doesn't appeal to me at all.

On the other hand, the "mock draft" forum game going on upthread, as well as a forum game from a couple of days ago where the poster before you got to eliminate M ships and N pilots from your available choices--those are more interesting constraints (and more palatable, to me).

We've only done it once, only because it is a PIA to reorganize your cards afterwards. We ended up surprisingly with squads that were within 1 point of each other. You assigned the upgrades as best you could but definitely not the squads you would opt for. It was very good fun though.

Yes it's a lot of fun!!

Do it with the UK builder.

Fabs is good for that. Just play with whatever shows up. You can tweek a little to make sure EPTs dont conflict with pilot skills etc., but it comes up with fun lists sometimes.

Even when they're bad lists. If you both are flying bad lists it's pretty awesome. Feels wrath vs marek stele?

I used to play random squads all the time when my nephew was learning the game. It was a fun way to nerf myself. It forced you to be creative.

Since he has gotten better at squad building, I haven't really played randoms. He doesn't need me to be handicapped anymore.

A few times, I've used a random number generator to select pilots up to a certain amount of points (usually over 75). If you get a generic, take 2. Then outfit your ships with upgrades until you hit the standard 100 points. Since I do one side (Imperial/Rebel) first, then the other, I let whichever side builds first change around upgrades on ONE ship to react to the other side's build, since the side that goes second gets to see what the first side already built. Good way to get some un(der)used pilots onto the table, and practice upgrading different ships.

I've heard of a few different approaches to this. Haven't tried it myself yet, but it would very much suit my casual play-style and my love of trying new things.

My buddy and I, both started at the same time, played a completely random battle yesterday. We used the squadbuilder over here:

http://fabpsb.free.fr/gindex.php

where we've put in our respective expansions and generated a 300-point squad.

My Rebels:

  • Rookie Pilot (36 points, R4-D6; Adv. Proton Torpedoes; Shield Upgrade)
  • Tala Squad (22 points, Homing Missiles; Engine Upgrade)
  • Red Squad (33 points, R2-D6; Marksmanship; Flechette Torpedoes; Shield Upgrade)
  • Prototype Pilot (22 points, Concussion Missiles; Munitions Failsafe)
  • Outer Rim Smuggler (39 points, Leia Organa; C-3PO; Engine Upgrade; Millennium Falcom)
  • Bandit Squad (16 Points, Ion Pulse Missiles; Munitions Failsafe)
  • Hobbie Klivian (32 points, R2-F2; Proton Torpedoes)
  • Rebel Operative (27 Points, Ion Cannon Turret; Weapons Engineer; Moldy Crow)
  • Etahn A'baht (46 points, R2-D2; Wingman; Adv. Proton Torpedoes; Fire-Control System)
  • GR-75 (31 points, Intelligence Agent)

His Empire-Squad:

  • Darth Vader (38 points, Push the Limit; Ion Pulse Missiles; Stealth Device)
  • Royal Guard Pilot (29 points, Adrenalie Rush; Hull Upgrade; Stealth Device; Title: Royal Guard TIE)
  • Majo Rhymer (51 points, Predator; Proton Torpedoes; Adv. Proton Torpedoes; Concussion Missiles; Ion Pulse Missiles; Seismic Charge; Hull Upgrade)
  • Obsidian Squad (15 points, Targeting Computer)
  • Captain Yorr (44 points, Heavy Laser Cannon; Rebel Captive; Tactician; Advanced Sensors; Anti-Pursuit Lasers; Title: ST-321)
  • Royal Guard Pilot (31 points, Predator; Shield Upgrade; Targeting Computer; Title: Royal Guard TIE)
  • Obsidian Squad (17 points, Shield Upgrade)
  • Academy Pilot (12 points)
  • Night Beast (15 points)
  • Obsidian Squad (13 points)
  • Colonel Vessery (35 points)

Since we're kinda newbish still, the battle raged on for a fair few hours, I think it was like about 4 hours in total. A fair few mistakes were made on both sides, most notably that the GR-75 actually managed to take out two TIE by flying over them in the same round after a movement-misjedgement by my buddy. :D

At the end, only Vader remained and was caught in the crossfire of my four remaining ships to mark the end of this battle.

I guess one of my fundamental issues is why you have to have a random list in order to try something new. Can't you just say "Hey, I've never actually had Game Element X on the table. I should build a list around it"?
