Update: I've decided to pick up the starter set for Attack Wing. I figure that will give me more information in order to make an informed decision. I can inspect the component quality myself; not just the ships, but the card stock, chipboard quality, that kind of thing. Of course, on it's own the starter set isn't a good indication of balance necessarily, but I'll try a few games and see if I like the core mechanics.

You'll find the core mechanics to be virtually identical. You'll find the components to be about what you'd expect. You'll find the models to be disappointing. Google the attack wing cards and that'll give you an idea of what some of the other ships/captains can do. I still wouldn't lay out any cash until you've found out some more. Try a local gaming club and see if anyone has it already. Save your cash until you're absolutely sure. Like most of the Trek fans here have said already, X-Wing is the better game, balance wise and quality wise.

Is it worth getting into Attack Wing when you already play X-Wing?

Short answer....no.

I have had a blast playing Attack wing, if you go into it with the right people it is a great game (but that can be said of any game). It is also easier in my opinion to create scenarios you saw in the shows.

If you like star trek then I think you will enjoy it. The other good thing is you can play straight away with the ships in the starter set and be competitive, one of my friends beat me in a an escort mission with the starter set only.

There is allot of ships out they all have spoilers on youtube so research before you buy.

If you want a good romulan ship buy the valdore in addition to the ship it comes with a great 3 player mission where you fight the scimitar from star trek nemesis

It depends on what everyone around you plays.

If there's a good group of Attack Wing players that doesn't Borg to the max and there are no X-Wing players, follow the masses.

If there's a huge group of both, buy both.

Neither game is much fun without an opponent.

I will add to this one thing: If you have a good group to play with, that will definitely increase the lifespan of the game. Heroclix has all the same problems this does it seems, and yet I played that solidly for two years because the player community at the FLGS was so good, they did great prize support, and the atmosphere was very newb friendly. And just to put the icing on the cake, when I did pack it in, that same community provided buyers for my collection, and I got a good chunk of change back to spend on my next hobby.

So, same rule that applies to everything else applies here: a good group of people can make any turd shine. And the better we got to know everyone the more friends we had available for casual pick-up games.

The biggest knock against AW is that its produced by Wizkids. Their name is synonymous with poor customer service, really bad quality control and making key parts of the game convention exclusives that are hard/expensive to get. They also have a reputation of making newer figures so OP the previous miniatures are almost obsolete. Not sure if they have done that with AW yet but they will.

Wizkidz have indeed with the Borg made other ships obsolete, worse they release OP cards at tournaments only the winners or big spenders on eBay get to use.

My solution is to make a BOSS VERSION of the game. Yeah it is not as good as X-Wing. But you can fix it just fine if you build what you want, and do not care about all of the other stuff. House Rules work.

Yup it is cool if you buy the right scale ships just because you want to have it look right on the table too. I would never go to a crap-ass-so-called-FLGS to play anything like this, it would not be friendly... not at all.

Well you could mix wrath of khan era ships with TNG but that's as far back as you should go.

I play both, enjoy both.

They feel a little different, dog fights vs huge star ships. The crew factor is great but I prefer in-faction and in-era. In fact, I prefer in-ship as well, as in kirk stays on the enterprise etc.

The models are OK. Not to the quality of x-wing but perfectly functional none the less. I've washed all of my klingon ships and they look a lot better. I know I shouldn't have to but this is Deep Impact against Armageddon, two rival games released at a similar time which will draw inevitable comparisons.

So tell me about the scale, because when I saw how tiny the Original Enterprise was I assumed the game did follow some sort of scale, is that not true? I couldn't remember the size comparison for the Warbird and the Ent-D, so the starter pack didn't scream out of scale to me, as I thought all three of those where roughly the same size...

I would have preferred a "gaming scale" where all ships were the same size on their stands as opposed to miniaturizing possibly the most famous ship of the franchise. This has been addressed with the recent release of the enterprise refit thankfully.

Unfortunately this inconsistency hurt the game as it gave people a"reason" to not buy into it, not that all of them would have anyway.

If it was in Deep Space Nine it is all good IMO, and the same can be said of Voyager. That is how I look at it. Now the films with the classic cast, that is where I draw the line. So then what do you have then? You have everything up to Star Trek five, plus all of the classic Vulcan and Romulan ships with a few other races like the Andorians from Enterprise and TNG. These ships stayed more or less the same, because I figure the shows producers did not feel the need to have new models made. There is more to it, and I am over simplifying it but I do not feel like writing a book just now.

I can confirm this. I spent six months researching it all for my Boss' BIG Approved version of STAW. The Klingon Birds of Pray in STAW are in scale with the Dominions Jemmie Bugs, for example. The new fighters are also in scale when used with 1/2500 models like I am doing. The math is off but the look is right when you compare what you see on the game table to what you saw in the shows.

This is how you have fun with STAW if you buy off the shelf.

I love how in X-wing people replace dice and templates, whereas in Attack Wing they replace whole ship models.

It staggers me that Wizzkid didn't consider better minis. It would have been such a cash cow. And they had the chance to come up with a different enough version (naval duels rather than dogfights) of the basic mechanics to make fans of both consider getting both.

I was extremely heavy into Attack Wing but don't recommend it to others anymore. The power creep and game imbalances are ridiculous and uber-super un-thematic card combos are just plain stupid. The ships are fine, but the game designers (WK) are definately not even trying to keep the game balanced. I'm thinking of getting out of it soon.

I would say, follow your "core" group of friends. If they're willing to give it a go, then go for it. If you do decide to play Attack Wing, Take it slow. Buy a Core Set and a few of the expansions (to test the waters).

I bought an Core Set, and a few expansions last year at Gen Con (2013), mainly because I have become a fan of the FlightPath system thanks to X-wing. My core group was not willing to give it a go, so I'm kinda stuck with what I've got. I do have some Trek fans, so I might hold on to what I have -- for now. I might get the Enterprise (refit), from the movie so I can play out the battle between the Reliant; casually of course.

With that said, you could get the game to play casually, at home
