Personally, while I do look for synergy and always try to Target Lock and Focus, I'm a casual gamer at heart. I love to experiment with squads and just have fun. Don't win? Eh, it's okay. If I do win it's cause for celebration, but it's probably not because I put together a great squad, but more that I just got lucky.

When in dispute of a rule, we look at the rulebook or if we can't find it, we roll dice or flip coins to see whose interpretation "wins" and then go with that. I always shake hands with my opponent afterwards and thank him for the game.

I love winning, but I do it clean. I would rather win than lose, but losing a hard-fought battle is very fun as well. As long as there are smiles all around the game table, it's a win for me anyway.

My son is trying to get me back into MtG, couple years ago I gave him all my cards from the 90s. I seen some rares the other day and it was like a siren song... Haha! no, three table-top collections, two MMOs and 55 hrs a week at work is plenty to do for now.

Well I would say casual I don't pick lists based on maths but on what I like and very rarely use the same list twice.

I don't care at all about 'that winning combo' but i love theorycrafting neat squads and unique mechanics.

I have some favourite ships: Phantom, Defender, Lambda, Firespray, Interceptor but I don't only use those and since the only person I play very often against is my own brother, and all he's got is 1 Falcon and 2 X-Wings, I definitely don't want to over use a great squad for fear that he'd lose interest entirely.

I play a different list every time my mini's hit the table.

I love the "Fly Casual" mentality of X-wing. I have also played 40k since 1995, and I am usually disgusted by the tabletop mentality of many players. Especially the one's who feel they have to critique your list when they play against you....

No really that's exactly what I was going to write. One effect of this approach is that even if you win most of you matches (have a 53-1 record VS one friend, I even make 10 lists and asks him to pick a number when we play sometimes) people will be more then likely to play again even if they lose against you.

Hard core casual player here. I don't think hard core only applies to the competition sect. Look at the impressive work by those here that have no competition value. They are truly hardcore.

I'm a casual player.

With a five-month-old baby there's not much time to play around the house (my wife is good and usually wins against me), but I feel outclassed when I try to play against others at a shop. There is so much strategy that I haven't absorbed, I find I have a hard time just "having fun" at it.

This is my take too! (I may not execute it as well as its described here, but its the direction I flow!)

I don't think that the two are mutually exclusive. When I play casual games during league nights I normally try to identify the mistakes that can be made in a tournament setting and focus on eliminating them in the future for myself and my opponent who is normally a friend. Generating an efficient squad for tournaments is normally subject to the trial and error in casual games.

That being said, I am forgiving of missed opportunities in a casual setting but not at tournaments. Flying casual should not be an excuse for flying sloppy.
