Extra board in Mountains of Madness

By Obsidian Razor, in General Discussion

Right, I'm quite excited about the new expansion, but I admit I cringed a bit when I saw that it includes another board.

While opinions are sure to differ, I was not a big fan of the big board expansions in Arkham Horror. They added a lot of clutter to the gaming table, and you rarely used their location specific cards as most players had to stay in Arkham proper for the game to work.

Has anybody taken a look of it already?

Is the board quite big, how much does it affect gameplay? How does it affect those of us with tables already struggling to accomodate the regular game?

Can you use most of the expansion without having to use the extra board?

Thanks!

Well the board has 8 locations so not as large as "The world" but big enough to read the text at the locations.

It can have little to large effect depending on which ancient one you fight and if you filtered certain mountains of madness cards out.

As above you can use most of it. you just have to filter out some of the stuff (I think the posse of Elder things ancient one is ment for the mountains)

Nice!

How much of the new stuff needs the new board? 25% or so?

Also, how big is the new board in comparison to the old one? 1/3 of it's size?

Thanks!

Something smaller, I'd say

I wonder how the new board will be accessed from the main board.

I am thinking specifically if the new board will replace the Antarctic expedition space as the new board seems to fulfill that expedition in minute details. Seems kinda daft to consider having an active expedition token on the Antarctic space and an option to go trudging off into the Antarctic board to get your brains sucked out by the Elder dudes.

If this turns out to be the case then i wonder if all future big expansions will focus on a "close up" of each expeditions geographic area.

Just been using the force to try and make out the rules section on the expansion video from gen con on BGG.

Seems that you can move from the Antarctic space to the Miskatonic Outpost space on the new board in the action phase. I couldn't read the second rules paragraph.

Seems that the new board represents an "optional unique Expedition" as opposed to replacing a Geographic area entirely. I wonder though how useful and relevant the new board locations will be when the GOO is not the Elder Gods.

my guess is that it won't be relevant, but I assume they will add clues for the board to, in some cases, force you to go there...which would be cool.

You can move to and from plateau of leng and world gates. Otherwise you go to Antarctica.

On the board photo you can see clear rules:

In the action phase any investigators can move from Antarctica space to Miscatonic outpost(first location on the Additional board). Also when investigators purchase a asset in any city space they can spend 2 success to flight to Miscatonic outpost.
