Ive forgotten how to fly

By force kin, in X-Wing

Maybe its vassals fault or maybe its that I've been concentrating on list building too much, but i just can't seem to fly well any more.

I've been using a lot of b wings lately and relying on vassal for games since i don't have much of a community around me now. i find myself totally blocked, denied shots and actions and landing on asteroids more often than not it seems.

generally, i can't seem to avoid charging headlong into battle and getting all my ships jammed up. my ships can't k turn past ab angled big base ship and i usually find i just get a good round of shots off, then jammed up and pot shotted by agile amps. im almost always rebels.

Any tips for initial ship placement and flying strategies tp avoid this? i think using show b wings has something to do with this too.

can someone suggest a simple, msneuverable list and a quick description of flying strategies for me to get my groove back? Maybe 3bs and 2as? But then ill ne slaughtered by phantom

I've lost the last 6 in a row and its not been pretty. not close games and ugly, bumpy flying where i dont even get any satisfying moves, i just get tied up and pot shotted.

maybe a defender + miniswarm list? I want ships that can clear out of a parking lot without running away, exposing their flanks without shooting back. its getting frustrating, i used to really enjoy they strategic flying element of this game, but lately i seem very sluggish and predictable.

Sorry for an ugly, whining post but i am finding myself not enjoying what used to be a wonderful game.

thanks for any help!

You could just set-up a few units on the mat with 12 asteroids and go for a solo joy ride sometime. That would get some practice in.

There is an art, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

If you don't say anything about your games, battle reports, etc. I don't know how we can help you.

Otherwise, just pick one list and stick to it until you get your mojo back.

Losing streaks can happen, if you already know what failed was your flying, practice.

The one drawback of the B-wing is that it can be block fairly easily. Its dial is pretty "slow" compared to other small based ships. Throw advanced sensors on and do a few pre maneuver barrel rolls in. From my experience it can help to keep you clear of furballs and traffic jams.

Look up some videos on YouTube on flying formations

Sorry id give you a link but I can't seem to do that on my phone.

Also just practice on your own.

Once you watch or read some videos just set up on your table or vassal and go nuts

Having a plan prior to set up will help.

Stick to your plan.

I find when I adjust or second guess myself is a big mistake on my part.

Are you flying your ships in a grid? Don't. It makes them very predictable, and doesn't help you learn how to judge distances or angles.

I intentionally spread out my initial ship placements, and offset their angles from both the board edge and each other by 10-20 degrees. It makes it much harder for my opponents to guess their maneuvers, as many people deploy square with the board edge and use it as a reference when estimating turns.

Keep in mind that a small ship base is the length of the 1-straight template, and a large ship's base is the length of the 2-straight template. If you're touching a large ship's base anywhere than at a shallow corner, your 2-Koiogran simply cannot cross it.

Since it sounds like you're primarily flying B-Wings, are you using Advanced Sensors? They will help with maneuvering and actions.

Also, are you being ionized often? B-Wings have only 1 defense die, making them particularly susceptible to most ionization effects. Try mixing in ships with higher Agility to mitigate this, and consider using your own ion weaponry.

B-wings actually have a very easy to block 2k. One opponent very effectively blocked my B from going ANYWHERE by being diagonal in front of it.

Try flying something else if this happens a lot to you.

Against large ships, place asteroids in the center and plot a course from your starting position so that they're on the sides of your ships. this gives you some protection and also makes it hard for large ships to maneuver.

Try this squad. Its not the best squad, but I think it can work:

Wedge Antilles (29)
Push the Limit (3)
R2-D2 (4)
Hull Upgrade (3)
Luke Skywalker (28)
Veteran Instincts (1)
R7-T1 (3)
Blue Squadron Pilot (22)
Heavy Laser Cannon (7)
Total: 100
Luke and Wedge can give you some fight against phantoms. HLC and Wedge good against Falcons. Just fly conservatively and don't lose ships cuz you only got 3.
Wedge with R2D2 and Luke should be pretty good at lasting into the endgame. Don't let them get focused.

Shamelessly stealing this as my sig.

I do this a bunch, even without combat steps. Very helpful.

Be my guest - I shamelessly stole it from Douglas Adams
