Do you think FFG will sell acrylic tokens eventually?

By Futant420, in X-Wing

Now that the complete set (minus critical hit markers [they will probably be the acrylic prize at worlds]) of tokens is out, do you think that FFG will sell a set of acrylic tokens at retail? How should they be priced/what would you pay for it? Do you think it's a horrible idea to dilute the desirability of them as prizes? What say you, wingers?

I reckon they will sell the set with 10 of each token for ~$30, and also a template/ruler set for ~$30. I think that the acrylic will be slightly different from the prizes, i.e. opaque vs. translucent.

No I don't. But I will point out that the 2014 Nationals Target Locks are opaque while the 2013 S1 Target Locks are transparent. I highly prefer the 2013 version to the point where I don't know if I'll even use the new ones.

I had noticed that. I agree the translucent is prettier. I too will stick to the 2013 version, but that may have something to do with me missing nationals. ;) However 6-10 is sexy in a must complete kind of way.

Edit: so say man, since you have both sets, can you tell me if they are all the same size?

Khyros,

If you're willing to sell a set of 2014 Nationals TLs I'd be interested ;)

Man that's a terrible problem to have =P

I certainly hope they do. First, because they're nice and I want them. Also because it'll really irk those people who bought the trans dice at $300 if they release those too. I've seen focus/evades go for $100 a set too. Crazy.

They are not the same size. The Nats are larger.

Eh, I keep trying to tell myself to sell them on Ebay for the ~$200 they're going for, but... I also like to have a full set of everything for myself =P.

After developing a ton of tokens for Applied Perspective, I'm totally smitten with opaque acrylic now (for tokens). It looks good on all surfaces, in all lighting. I still prefer transparent for range rulers. For movement templates it's all cosmetic.

I hope they release some too.

Prices are totally effin cray cray. I had a guy offer me 100 bucks for my foci and turned him down. I still dunno who's crazier.

I asked the guys at FFG during GenCon this exact question. The response i got was cryptic to say the least. As close to quoting as possible " we're not dumb we know there is a large demand for acrylic tokens, and nobody wants to leave money on the table". take that as you will.

That certainly screams "acrylic tokens incoming" doesn't it?

Maybe the prizes are a "first run" kinda thing to work out the kinks. Maybe they felt like Hexis and thought the opaque was more suitable, or maybe they wanted a more affordable product? (I wouldn't think that translucent is more expensive than opaque, but what do I know?) Perhaps the sizes or designs weren't finalized. Opaque tokens would be an awesome way of getting tokens out there and not taking away from the uniqueness of the prizes. Then I could have two different sets ;)

I think they should offer something different than the OP stuff for sale. Like offer opaque green focus tokens. Easily different from the prize tokens, but still look good and clearly FFG products. Would work with all kinds of stuff.

Or just partner up with AP and offer my designs for sale. ;)

I like the draw that the special acrylics give to organized play, as long as they keep the uniqueness factor of what they offer in the OP kits I don't see a problem with FFG adding token SKUs to their roster. The 3rd party creators will take a hit, however they're already competing and this would be one more to deal with. The real issue is that FFG can use their considerable distribution channels to get these out there along with their ships, where the 3rd party creators are using their individual sites/eBay for sales.

If I were making templates/tokens I'd be trying really hard to determine FFG's release schedule and use that time for agreeing a distribution deal with a recognized internet shop to expand my reach. I'd also really start looking at creating processes to make them cheaper, or have really attractive designs to solidify my market share.

I'm not too sure I agree with that. If they release acrylic tokens, people will only be willing to pay pocket change for them, not the ridiculous pricing you see on Ebay. I wouldn't expect they'd be able to sell for more than ~20/set... seeing as those who want acrylic tokens pay about that for a 3rd party anyways, and there would no longer be anything special about FFG tokens.
