How do you share your set?

By oumagic, in X-Wing

I am not sure if there is a "correct" way but was just looking for ideas. My set is just large enough to have the rebels versus empire 100 point game with a few ships left over. When my son and I play, we just flip a coin and say if it is heads, he is the rebels. Then we pick our ships privately. There is a little problem with us both wanting to use some of the same upgrades, but I usually just let him pick first. Of course, then when I pick I can see what upgrades he took, so that is not entirely. I guess I could always print some extras just for casual play?

I thnk I might have some friends over soon and was just looking for ideas of how you work it out in your games if you only have one set. I am the only one with a set right now, though I hope some of my friends eventually pock up their own. Maybe with new people, I just setup two equal teams and flip a coin to see who has which side or let the guest pick? Kind of like when mom tells you to share a piece of cake with your sister and you cut the cake and she picks which piece she want. All ideas are welcome. I am even thinking 50 point games might be better to start?

For casual games like that. I'd just print out enough cards so everyone can use the ones they want.

If you're introducing people into the game, I think the best thing is to set up lists ahead of time and let them pick or flip a coin as you said and go from there. Learning X-Wing is pretty easy, especially if you're a TT gamer already, but even then not getting into the squad building part may be for the best.

I let the wookie (wife) win...

She really likes Imperial ships and i'll get a better game playing her if i play rebels.

Imperials was my route i'd chosen but i've ended up getting as much rebel stuff tbh

Imperials through choice but i'd rather a 'narrative' game of 'star wars' than 'han solo and chewie vs han solo and luke' so I'll happily play whatever side *isnt* the side my oppoenent turns up with.

Yesterday Rob came round with only Imperials so i played two games as rebs

Last friday Sam came over with 100 points of each so we had a game each of playing each faction in a 'makes sense' opposed way.

I also let mates with only imperials and say a certain type of list use proxy/printout cards as it's ridiculous to ask them to spend £5 (or even £25 if they get the ship) on a card that might be useful for them but only comes with say the falcon.

I'd rather I played and beat someone because they rolled badly or made poor choices.. not because they couldnt afford an upgrade card they could really have done with!

I wouldn't even worry about printing cards in a casual game. Just fire up http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ and build your list there and the card text comes along. Works great on an iPad, and well enough on my phone. I personally avoid proxying ship models or dials, but don't have a problem doing the same for pilots.

Organized events are obviously different, but it doesn't sound like those are considerations for you.

The other easy way to handle that is simply with a pen and a pad of paper. Have the first person write down their list, including upgrade cards they wish to use, then put all the upgrade cards back in the deck. The second person then looks through and writes down their list on a separate sheet of paper. Voila! Problem solved. You can both show your lists to each other at the same time, and share cards as needed, either by just writing down the card's ability quick, or placing it between the two of you.

yeah i mean at home, i can just say 'all my xwings have shield upgrade ok sian?'

But the other day Rob came round for a game and had photocopied flechette torpedos as as a purely imperial player he doesnt want to buy a rebel transport.

While we'd spoken online it was the first time we'd met up for a game but i'm totally cool with stuff like that and he did ask first.

I own all the ships that my friends and I play with, and as a good host I usually let them pick faction. Not enough cards? I'm ok with proxies...

Base BARELY touching/overlapping an asteroid or other ships? Ignore and shift a few mm's if need be...

Ships corner off the table? Ignore it. Only if 50%+ of the ships base is off the table/play area does it count.

Sort of way we play, i wouldnt expect it vs strangers but im really lenient with mates. With new players i say 'i'll be really lenient with you over mm overflyes etc, i'll remind you if you miss and action or forget an ability.. you are under no obligation to do the same'.

i just think it makes for a better game.

Yesterday Rob forgot soontir was PS9 and was keen to do a killing blow with echo and shot echo first.. i was totally cool with reminding him about soontir and letting him fire out of sequence... its just not that important in a game round your house who wins or looses but it sucks if you lose becasue of a silly error like forgetting to fire one of your guys.

fortunately my GF prefers the rebel scum so in games with her I always get to play my Imperials, and when introducing the game to new players I'll let them play w/e side they want.

I don't know if I am doing it right ... I just ended up buying so much stuff that I think I can outfit about 20 100 point squads (and that is probably conservative).

You just can't have enough good looking minis ... :P

I have the Rebel and Empire keychains. If neither of us care, I'll hold one in each hand and tell them to choose.

You could have everyone build their squads on http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build

When you print them out select "Full" in the View selection, that will give you the entire text from the upgrade cards.

I agree with WG. Most of the Squad builder websites allow you to print off squads, that include the text from all upgrades and pilot abilities.

I'd play a couple of games first with pre-builts, and when you decide that everyone who is playing wants to 'jump in' to the squad building deep end of the pond, use a squad builder site, and have them print out their squad with the full text.

All are excellent builders. You couldn't go wrong with any of them.

I also have the app for my Android Smartphone / tablet. It's perfect for "at a glance" creating, and allows you to change stuff on the fly.

yeah i use that a lot but my printer in the house is out of ink

I build on that programme then select the cards i need from the box

As long as there is one official card on the table of that type you don't even need to print anything. Just tear off a corner of a piece of paper and write the name of the card on it, and put it next to your ship card or whatever. If anyone needs a refresher on what that card does, whoever has the official copy of that card can pass it over.

Thanks, all.

I have enough ships for multiple builds on both sides and i kept the rebel upgrades separate from empire ones when i got them in expansions then i looked through them for duplicates that the other side didnt have each side has all the upgrades needed to make a build i think every upgrade possible. It lets the person choose for them selves and maybe find their own combo .
