Help with Epic (No Huge ships)

By Donnerwolf, in X-Wing

I'm going to an Epic Tournament in Pensacola on Saturday and I'm having a hard time putting a list together. How many ships is a good count? Should I bring ordinance? Is two YT-1300s a bad idea?

I'm also having a had time picking no-named pilots and/or low PS. The fan-boy like seeing all my favorite characters on the table too much. Help me break my habits!

Just a proposal.

Try keeping the majority of ships at the same PS. Really makes movement easier. And focus fire too. Also facing more ships means AoE like Assault missile have a higher chance of dealing damage or split formations up.

Pilot abilities is less important. Cheaper pilots nets you more firepower

Focus fire is always a good thing. Like he said area of effect weapons can be great too.

One thing to note though, pilot skill plays a greater role in epic matches.

For example, the last epic tournament I played in I used 8 ships, wait for it..........with empire.

Sounds crazy right? But get this, all 8 of those ships shot at pilot skill 9 or higher. Swarm tactics is a beautiful thing. So point being, I got 8 shots before ever getting hit back. Which gave me amazing control on who I wanted to focus down & destroy, before they even had a chance to fight back.

Something can be said about low pilot skill guys also. You can fit more, which in turn gives you more shots. But you have to be careful with how you fly them.

I love playing epic.

If you are looking at pilot synergy, I would pick a couple of ships that work well to support other ships, and then fill the rest of the list with cheap ships that appreciate the support. "Dutch" handing out a target lock to a Z-95 or A-wing with Assault Missiles seems like a decent start if you expect to see lots of formation flying. I agree that going wild with named pilots is bound to hurt more than help, but you can choose a couple "squad leaders" if you will, and it will help lend some more immersion to your matches and hopefully ramp up overall squad efficiency.

Good advice, Guys!! Keep it coming!

I've played about seven games that include huge ships. So I'm no expert, but I have noticed a few things.

Some Priorities.

• Any secondary weapons with 4+ dice, usually versus one reinforce action, preferably range 2-3.

Eg. Adv.Proton Torpedoes & Proton Rockets.

• Ships with Boost, or the Engine upgrade, and with Push the Limit.

• Ion wave (Ion turret, Ion Cannon, especially Ion pulse torpedoes)

• Sensor Jammer (huge ship don't use focus) & Opportunist.

• Merc Copilot & Saboteur as Huge faceup damage is brutal. The aft section of the CR90 has two Direct Hit damage cards and the fore section has none, BUT the fore section has two Structural Collapse cards which are equivalent to three damage. Also weapon damaging cards (3) are only on the fore section deck.

• TIE Advanced:

Dust off Maarek Stele for the same reason.

If possible with Proton Rockets. Darth Vader with Engine upgrade!

• TIE Phantom

Their maneuverability can be life saving against Huge ship bug squash ability.

• I may add to this list....

I can not express how good E'tan with sensor jammer, shield upgrade, and R2D2 is in Epic. Keep him toward the back of your fleet and stick Biggs next to him with some good defensive upgrades. Next load up on firepower, like generic Bwings, Xwings, and Tala squads. Let the critts flow out and destroy everything. Potentially add 1 high PS ship for endgame dog fighting if it comes down to it. Try to keep all the generics at the same pilot skill. I like 4 PS but 2 has merit as well.

Must agree with this. Just faced something similar with Etahn and the only reason I killed him was with Echo getting behind him and sniping (with a focus token). 2 shots with FCS and he was gone... But without Echo, I wouldn't know how to snipe the guy with 6-7 Z95's in front of him, Sensor Jammer and focus/evade.

Etahn is extremely extremely good in Epic.

Assualt Missiles are good too.
