Rebel Aces is amazing!
The fact that everything has been spoiled on this expansion for some time does not diminish the experience of getting it on the table. If you are lucky enough to have gotten it from GenCon, you should be trying it out right now. If you haven't, then you should be actually glad that Wave 5 probably won't be here until October, so that you will have some time in September to explore what is possible with these new pilots and upgrades.
The models look great, too.
But oh, the possibilities. Consider the following squad:
Jake Farrell
-Proton Rockets
-A Wing Test Pilot
-Outmaneuver
-Predator
Nera Dantels
-Deadeye
-Proton Torpedoes
-Flechette Torpedoes
-Munitions Failsafe
Kyle Katarn
-Ion Cannon Turret
-Recon Specialist
-Moldy Crow
This list is 99 points. It is very easy to find yourself with Jake having 2 focus tokens, PLUS Barrel Rolling, PLUS Boosting, in order to get the best Possible arc dodging/range you desire. One of those repositionings happens at the beginning of the Combat phase, so after even the highest pilot skill ship has finished their movement. It isn't particularly hard to get Jake in range one of an opponent, outside of their arc, and be firing 5 dice with Proton Rockets against their -1 agility roll (Outmaneuver), with a built in re-roll (Predator), focus, AND an extra focus for defense (Kyle).
Nera Dantels makes Proton Torpedoes worth taking. Let that sink in for a minute. Now, with Kyle on the squad, she can move wherever she wishes, choose focus, be able to fire a Proton or Flechette in any direction, and then still have a focus to modify the results!
Here is a list that has a good chance of combating Phantoms, includes no Falcons, and doesn't make a particularly strong Pilot skill bid.
Feel free to add your own contribution. Rebel Aces is amazing, and more people should be talking about it.
