I was in the debut demo for Imperial Assault, here are my photos

By Danthrax, in X-Wing

Hey guys. Darth Vader pulled the sheet off a table and a developer pulled out a box to run the first Imperial Assault demo, and I was one of the first four chosen to sit down. Sorry I didn't take many photos during the game - I was having too much fun - but I took some during setup. They're below.

Sorry they're just links. I can't imbed photos with my phone. If someone could imbed below this post, that would be great.

The development said there are 30 scenarios in the book to play, and 11 scenarios make up a campaign. I think each player plays one Rebel character throughout the campaign (if you "die" in a mission you're revived for the next one) and gains XP to use for class - specific upgrades. One player is like the dungeon master - he plays for the Imperial and uses a book to tell the other players when surprises trigger during the campaign.

It was fun!

Oh god. Combining Star Wars and Descent...

Good game, FFG. Good game. You win.

All you need to do is use IMG tags.

What I find most interesting is, is that FFG must've worked something out with Hasbro. It has been believed that Hasbro still had the boardgame rights. But now FFG is getting into the Star Wars board game market.

Battle of Theed rework incoming???

Doesn't work for me, Wonder. Said I can't use that extension on this forum. Thanks for doing it for me, though.

It has to be a url ending with an appropriate file extension, like .jpg, .png, .gif, etc. I actually did it from my phone. If you click on one of your links there should be vertical ellipses in one of the top corners. From there you'll find a menu option that allows you to open the photo in a separate window. That url is the one you want to use IMG tags on.

I can't possibly be alone in hoping for an X-Wing version of the campaign. In fact, the X-Wing command thing seems like a good first step...

i'm going to gen con next year dangit. I swear i see porkins in the background of one of those pics.

anyways ffg has enough star wars stuff that you really could do an all around super campaign for a group of players. ground combat / rpg version with campaigns / large scale epic armada space battles and even dogfighting. hmmm....

EDIT: and with D&D just sucking wind looks like i might be switching over permanently..

Does the game seem self-contained - can you play full armies using just a core?

Vader looks like he's playing baseball.

Those miniatures look awful, I'm hoping the final versions are better.

The miniatures are unpainted.

Out of curiosity, how much is that Vader costume? I know the real suit blew up on the Death Star, but this one looks just as good.

I think they get around it here by classifying this as an RPG-lite, rather than a straight up board game, assuming such a rights dispute exists.

This isn't a miniatures wargame like X-wing, it's basically a Star Wars clone of FFG's fantasy roleplay boardgame Descent. So there's no armies, or anything of that sort. It's a self contained set of dungeons/missions/campaigns in a box, with probably expansions like crazy to come if Descent is anything to go by.

Joking aside I think the miniatures look fabulous compared to the old bendy plastic prepainted ones from SWM a few years ago. Can't wait to play this and paint all the stuff.

You win GIF of the day! That made me laugh so hard!

Yeah, they said the figures will be unpainted in the final release, so those who like to paint stuff can have at it.

I'm pretty sure you can play with what's in the box, and the developers said they're going to release new figures with new missions in the future to expand your collection.

Descent is fairly self contained. Doesn't negate the need/want for more expansions for a lot more variety.

This. Descent 2E was my favorite game until my girlfriend had a falling out with it. A single campaign is all you need to play (and in the case of Imperial Assault, they also have the 1v1 skirmish mode for even more replayability) but if your gamer group ends up loving it, expect to want expansions in the future.

Looks like my old WotC minis will be useable again!!!

Sad that Vader did not force lift the cover off the table and game instead.

unpainted minis are pretty much the standard

I can see people buying this for the minis to use in the Role play game

Right? may be just the thing for those of us that play EotE or AoR.

The miniatures are unpainted.

They are supposed to be unpainted. Have you ever played Descent? This is esentially a clone of Descent with a Star Wars skin on it. Those minis are unpainted as well, but their quality is much higher.
