Would you rather play Armada or Epic play in X-Wing?

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Epic in X-wing. Very simple reason(s). I have a Corvette for X-wing, no Transport yet though and Armada is not out yet. Also, it's taken months for people to start coming to games at my local shop to play X-wing. Considering how few people are playing X-wing locally, and what seems to be a $100 just to start Armada, I highly doubt even 1 game will be played here. Probably not even going to be demo'd as that's a lot of money for a game store to spend on a game for demo purposes that barely has 8 people(that never get together at the same time) that play a similar game in X-wing.

erm but isnt that *exactly* the sort of game armada is offering you but custom made to work on that ['epic' scale rathe than half sizing corvettes so they can actually fit on the board and manouvre?

- Xwing rules, which are different.

- Badass big ships instead of tiny ones.

- Able to use your miniature collection.

I am not an epic fan, but c'mon, there are legitimate reasons to prefer Epic over Armada.

Yeah i can see them too, i'm more being devils advocate than anything else as i'm unlikely to play Armada when i've got loads of stuff for a very good fleet action game (battlefleetgothic) painted up in the cupboard in the wargames room anyway.

The problem I have really is that the 'big badass' huge ships only just cut it with the current ones as they do look way off scale (becaue they , well are!).

I can totally see why you might want a big opponent ship for epic but i still think if you want star destroyers and nebulon type stuff in xwing its either going to be so scaled down as to look ridiculous or you're going to have to go for obscure EU ships which is a risky marketing venture for a high cost item that doesnt appeal to people who only know 'star wars' on a casual level.

X wing is iconic, the box set has iconic models.

To a degree in armada you get iconic blockade runner and something star destroyer shaped, you can see why it might draw the eye.

I'm just dubious as to how a good, iconic huge Imp ship can be put into the game (i hope one is, i just cant see what it would be right now). I also think that if you do start putting two or three huge ships aside you sort of lose the charm of a 'dogfight system'

Just personal opinion.

I *personally* prefer to use a ruleset thats designed for the scale of the action, thats just me.

I play a lot of WWII, i use about four different sets of rules depedning on whether its two squads clashing in a forest or a divisional level action.

Epic xwing. Especially now that the Hounds Tooth is on the way... :-D

erm so it's 'would you rather play armada then xwing'. I'm allowed to make a preference i take it?

In that case i'm saying that for fleet actions i'd rather play armada, for dogfights xwing

Im expressing a personal opinion that it looks to me that armada represents a fleet action better than a dogfighting game does...(epic/fleet, see it as you will). Odd that with one being expressly designed for capital ships (with supporting swarms of fighters) that it *might* pan out being the better option if you want to see 'two man o wars slugging it out'.

Fine - that's your personal opinion. You're entitled to it. I'm not going to repeatedly tell you that you should be doing something else instead.

See the difference?

x wing, but i am still yet to play an epic game

i'm waiting until the empire epic ships are released (if they do)

my rebel transport and tantive IV will continue to sit in my display case unused until said time

Erm,no, its a different thread, *you and I* have agreed we dont agree on a different thread. I'm allowed to express my opinion of optimising systems for scale with other people.

Unless of course i missed the moderator tag on your account?

Chill out fella, its a wargame. As i said i'm not actually that bothered i'm jsut pointing out a way of looking at it that you've seen on another thread, other people might not have.

I get you'e really frustrated you feel epic play isnt currently having much push, i think you're probably right in that.

Aye, both. And considering that they are releasing Assault, it'd be nice to see those minis into proper scale converted for battles on the surface with the X-Wing system (c'mon, the first part of the Battle of Hoth requires to be played! The escape is not enough!)

Real waste, play the scenarios for them. Great fun! The tantive one is especially cool as its a full campaign (doh you know this you haveone) I had to proxy some int as regular ties and the advanced i didnt have enough at the time but its well worth doing even if you have to substitute some of the ships it states you use.

I'd love to see an 'low orbit/atmospheric flight add on. Rule for AT AT , AT ST, Turrets, Air/Snowspeeder etc. so you could fight above Endor, do Yavin, strafe moons and stations etc etc. I'd like that in the 1/270 scale if it was on my wishlist using the xwing mechanics. But again i think you might struggle trying to have a 'swiss army knife' set of rules.

I LOVE Epic.

I've played EAW and EAW: FOC. I like the idea of a bomber squad being a huge threat and needing fighters for cover. I want to see B-Wings going after an Imperial Huge. I know many are concerned about the scale and price. But even if it was a loss leader for FFG a couple of Imperial Huge, cool.

I'd also like to see a play mat for the death star plus turrets. A bigger campaign where you could play any mission, i.e. a 50 mission campaign book.

P.S. I still play EAW and EAW:FOC.
