Epic. For fleet-scale play, I'd be more inclined to try Firestorm Armada.
Would you rather play Armada or Epic play in X-Wing?
Both. I know that with my friends we're already working on all sorts of ways to mix the two into an almost "Campaign" style series of sessions. Brief off the cuff example:
The Empire is producing TIE Phantoms at a secret base surrounded by protective mines and guarded by a light dettachment of Imperial Star Destroyers. You start the campaign by having the Rebel starfighters jump into the area out of hyperspace and begin a mission to destroy the numerous mines whilst defending themselves from TIE Fighters and possibly one operational Phantom. If the mines are cleared the Rebel corvettes jump into the battle and you switch to Armada style play to proceed. You can go from micro-scale conflicts to macro-scale very easily in this way and with the RPG games or even Imperial Assault, you could even go so far as to have a group of Rebel soldiers or mercenaries board the secret station in an effort to steal data and then plant charges to destroy said base.
Honestly, the possibilities are virtually endless. If anything, X-Wing players should see Armada as a boon to the potential for creating great battles and in-game stories with their friends and gaming buddies. Its obvious with a whole new faction on the way that Fantasy Flight is nowhere near done with X-Wing. The Imperial huge ships will come, its just a matter of time.
Neither.. just not that interested in the big ships..
Epic feels like it isn't that good. It needs some weird rebalancing for the epic ships to be as amazing as they should be.
Would pay for Epic. Feels more fun to see each ship. Also, don't want to purchase a $100 starting game or a big table or paint my own. (Not visually artistic.)
Would play Armada if some friend let me play with theirs but I'm NOT willing to spend money on it.
I'm with a lot of the folks above. I want to do more epic play, and without an Imperial huge to balance the rebel huges, it doesn't feel right. I was a bit annoyed at having not had an Imperial huge revealed today - even though I do like what they're doing with the S&Vs.
I haven't made up my mind about Armada yet. I certainly really like the notion of big fleet battles with capital ships, but I'll have to actually get a look at the models. It looks like they have some really arbitrary scaling going on, which is turning me off.
My current experience with X-Wing has been making a make-shift fighter sim-like game with RPG elements with a few of my friends. I already have a 1st campaign planned out but was hoping for a little help from FFG this weekend (Most notably getting the Assault Gunboat and at least one more Huge ship), but they didn't do anything like that. I can add a campaign using the wave 6 ships but at this point, I rather figure out a way to do the campaign in Armada than sit and hope for FFG to help me out. I'll still work on X-Wing, but it has until Armada comes out to convince me stay with X-Wing.
Haven't played any X-wing Epic. Don't own any Epic ships. And, my only real incentive to even buy Epic, is for the new X-wing cards. So, I'm voting Armada myself. Of course, whether I actually buy in or not is another story. But, that is my choice if it must be an either/or proposition.
I got to demo Armada Friday. At first I thought, eh, it's alright. But the more I thought about it the more I liked it. I mean, it has a picture of "Howlrunner" on her card! Okay, so that's minor, but it made an impression.
What I really like is the command stack. In X-Wing, you move blind, but pick your action based on the current game state, but it's swapped for Armada (which I'm sure you already know). Playing the VSD and planning your action 3 turns in advance feels like commandng a capital ship.
And Huge ships in X-wing just don't dish out enough damage. If I had to pay full price for the Tantive IV I would be very disappoitnted. Fortunately I won it at Chicago regional (thanks, Dice Dojo!)
So as much as I am looking forward to the impending Imperial Huge ship, I'd have to choose Armada.
I'll buy Armada, but I suspect it'll gather dust on my shelf, until I've O.D. on X-Wing.
And since I'm on the X-Wing, I prefer playing the Epic version of it. I'm not ready to learn a whole new set of rules, meta, strategy with Armada. For now, at least.
Armada.
I feel for those who have the current Huge ships and want to see more, but I don't think there is much room to expand - maybe 2 Imperial ships and that's it. Try playing Epic right now with a blockade runner on each side. It may not be an exact emulation, but it probably plays similar enough to having an Imperial Huge ship. I think Huge ships are probably best relegated to the kinds of games people use them for currently.
Thus, if you had to pick just one, and you picked Epic, you are basically throwing out a whole new game with much more growth potential for the sake of fixing a hobbled system that is not desirable to a majority of players anyway.
Fortunately, for a company like FFG, it doesn't always have to be either/or, but if they are not pursuing Huge Imperial ships, I believe it is likely due to one or more of these reasons (keep in mind each of these is entirely hypothetical and I have no evidence that there is any truth behind them)
1. Underwhelming sales of the existing Huge ships. However, they've gone to reprint on the existing ships, so while sales still may have been underwhelming, they're not throwing in the towel yet.
2. Increase in costs driving up price. New model requires new moulds, etc. This could drive up the unit price, which may be beyond what FFG feels can sell.
3. Limited general production capacity, and filling it with new products they feel can diversify their audience and result in better revenue flow for the investment
4. Limited production capacity of special manufacturing processes required for the huge ships
5. Lack of interest from retailers, possibly due to physical size of the boxes; 8 ships take up the same physical space as the Tantive IV box, and have an MSRP of $120 - 33% higher than the Tantive IV, which means 33% more profit.
Well arguably the sales of Huge ships would be greatly improved if every side had them as an option. Currently epic play just isn't really viable and until FFG release Imperial (and now Scum and Villainy) Huge ships it will remain that way. bearing in mind that destroyer/corvette sized ships are at the bottom end of the capital ship scale i really don't see an issue with them appearing in both Armada and XWing. Heck Armada has swarms of Ties and X-Wings but i don't see anyone complaining about those ![]()
I personally will continue to purchase X-Wing and will not be touching either of the two new Star Wars products FFG is launching as i already play other game systems that do those things better. X-Wing on the other hand is still the best miniature dogfighting game i know of.
Armada.

I'm glad somebody else understands how plastics production, marketing and retail work.
Having worked at GW HQ for five years those are all *very* valid reasons why we occasionally dropped ranges.
A major one is 'wall space' most stores could have ten slots for an army in a GW store, so you cant have too many choices, similarly most independent stores have a section for xwing with so many 'slots'... you're right, display *one* huge ship you probably wont sell as its out of 'hobby pocket money range' or display EIGHT ships that are impulse buys.
Likewise back in around 2005 a set of sprues to make say a warhammer tank cost about £150,000 GBP to make the injection mould alone, thats before you box it, illustrate it, ship it.
Now thats a HUGE investment for a company as big as GW, hence lots of add ons in metal once a core frame was made. Imagine now FFG have to:
1. Find an iconic huge imperial ship within the scale of the game (challenge in itself given they had to half scale the rebs)
2, Get a master made and injection tooling carved out (expensive)
3. (and gw dont have to do this) Set up their assembly and painting tooling
A plastic kit is not *easy* to put out. The steel presses that make injection moulds have to be perfect as they are clamping shut and ejecting at stupid speeds and if you muck up your tooling early on it costs a fortune to sort out.
Anyway, its just worth considering there are more factors than just 'wouldnt this be nice for the game' that a company have to consider ![]()
Anyone else notice how close in size the Nebulon-B and Corellian Corvette models appear to be in Armada? The Nebulon looks barely longer...
I'll reserve judgement until Ive played Armada but hopefully both. Love Epic as I can field cool combos. The group i play with can only muster 1 CR90 and 1 transport between us. We really need an Imp epic ship of some sort. If not there is no need really to put the single turbolasers on the CR90 and its the short range anti fighter fits or naught. I would love a battle with 2 large ships duking it out as well as the fighters rushing all over the place as well. Even a S&V epic ship in the future would be cool as well.

Agreed. The CR90's main weapon and turbolasers seem custom made to engage other large, low agillity ships. Certainly they're not intended to be fired at the Agility 3(+) fighters that the Imperials field on a daily basis.
I still think FFG missed a trick by making the CR90 Rebel only. OK, the Tantive's iconic, but if they'd boxed it with Imperial & Rebel crew, upgrade & title cards we could have been fielding them across from each other now, kind of like two old fashioned Man O' Wars slugging it out at long range, firing broadsides at each other while fighters swarm around them...
Edited by FTS Geckoerm but isnt that *exactly* the sort of game armada is offering you but custom made to work on that ['epic' scale rathe than half sizing corvettes so they can actually fit on the board and manouvre?
No, it's really not.
Epic is an enhancement of the standard X-Wing Miniatures Game featuring larger points values per side, a larger gaming area and a few unique touches in the Huge ships. Armada is a completely different fleet-based game system which has absolutely nothing to do with the standard X-Wing Miniatures game at all.
But, of course, you know this. We've just had this exact discussion on another thread.
I would like to see at least 1 Imperial epic ship released to even things out. However, I will probably focus on Armada for my Capital ship needs when it releases. I guess a large part of it will really depend on who I find to play Armada with though.
Might go into hibernation and await to see if Epic is revived again...After watching 1st video of the game which shall nott be named , contents of the game left a wierd sense of confusion... Seemed the main emphasis was it is a very big box and you get alot of stuff ; more than what you see here , and then again less of what is on the table..Then watching the actual game play ; well this is nott for me...
I dont 'know that', i know thats how *you* feel. Big difference.
You're assuming you're right.
The post i replied to said 'i want capital ships slugging it out while fighters whix around them' (i paraphrase)
Looking at the box contents of armada i see capital ships slugging it out while swarms of fighters fly around them,
Or are we looking at different core armada box pics?
Would definitely rather play Epic X Wing.
", kind of like two old fashioned Man O' Wars slugging it out at long range, firing broadsides at each other while fighters swarm around them..."
Surely that *is* what armada is offering?
Just different rules to fit the scale of the action.
You're assuming you're right...
Last time I looked Gadge, the title of this thread was "Would You Rather Play Armada Or Epic Play In X-Wing".
I (anbd others here) are expressing our opinion that we would rather play the X-Wing Miniatures Game, at Epic scale, with Huge ships, than buy an entirely new game system that we are unable to use our X-Wing Miniatures Game ships in.
What's so difficult to understand here?
erm so it's 'would you rather play armada then xwing'. I'm allowed to make a preference i take it?
In that case i'm saying that for fleet actions i'd rather play armada, for dogfights xwing
Im expressing a personal opinion that it looks to me that armada represents a fleet action better than a dogfighting game does...(epic/fleet, see it as you will). Odd that with one being expressly designed for capital ships (with supporting swarms of fighters) that it *might* pan out being the better option if you want to see 'two man o wars slugging it out'.
whats so difficult to understand here?
