How do epic games set up? Along the short side?
I feel like there isnt a whole lot of tactics involved with that little space with so many ships.
Along the long side.
Okay. And how do you feel about that effect? Does it create good "epic" games?
Feels like a huge ship in the middle can shoot pretty much everywhere.
Standard Epic size is 6' x 3'. It's about right, unless you are crazy and one side decides to run with two CR-90s and two transports. Then it's just a game of bowling. ![]()
I have never played an Epic game but plan to after I get this table built.
I like the idea you're going in these plans. Although, I feel like offering a flush 6x3 surface will force players to put cards where they're hidden from across the table. I feel there's a reduction in error when both players see the minutiae of shield removal, crits dealing, etc.
Edited by Mu0nLove the lower shelf for the cards. Brilliant idea. Let's see some photos when it's done. ![]()
Love the lower shelf for cards
Cards .. or beers.
Based on the Team Covenant video on Armada, 6x3 is the official surface size for Armada play, so that works there as well if you're planning on getting Armada
Would have thought having the lower level for cards is odd. Too easy for people to play silly buggers with damage decks or assigned cards or whatever. Much prefer having everything in view. But otherwise, Awesome!
why not go 6x4 just for extra space?
Or a big 6x6 =D
I think we play on a 6x5 at our store by placing two of those off-grey plastic tables for playing card games together.
Oh! That's going to be nice ![]()
The black play surface is 6x3' the shelf is 6"
and I hope I can trust my friends not to cheat but just incase I might level it up a bit.

For me, it's not a matter of cheating--I just like to be able to eyeball my opponent's cards, damage, shields, etc at will, without needing to constantly ask them. Leveling the shelf so it is closer to being flush might be a good compomise.
Two other thoughts just for consideration:
It's good to know at a glance what ships are without shields or damaged... in a narrative sense your pilots would be able to see if one TIE had chunks coming out of its wings.... but if the cards are out of my eyesight as a player i have to remember the status of potentially eight identical ships?
I'd put a 4" edge around your table for cards.
a 6x4 table s handier for other games as well.
I play warhammer 3rd ed and a 3x6 table would be no use to me. Sian and I bought our dining room table because it *is* huge and extends to about eight foot if you pull the eaves out.
It's well handy and was £60 GBP from a second hand furniture store... cheaper than building a table if you want one that looks nice too.
I also have a feeling that if in your current plan the lower shelf extends four to six inches out form the play area people will bang into it and knock over stuff all the time.
You tend to fixate your eyes on the game surface, your brain tells you the table is a foot away, not six inches away, you lean or move forwards and knock the table.. or you'll be constantly banging into those jutting out corners.
People dont make regular tables or even games tables like this for a good reason ![]()
Then again im not a joiner, you may have just invented the worlds best xwing table but i think its a bit counter intuitive.
What you *could* possibly do is have a lower level starfield and then a few inchs above have a glass top, so you can see stuff through the table.... might look rubbish though if the glass just reflects the lights above back at you so you dont see your mat underneath... also glass table means things will slide.. yeah best leave that idea.

If possible, go for 7x4. It gives you a lot more space, with room for a pony with room to roll dice and place cards and a ship that comes up to the edge doesn't immediately fall over it.
How about this?

I got the height from my kitchen table.
Edited by Boomer_JI suspect that design is more versatile... Needs more cup holders though. ![]()
The table height is not as important as the chairs. Def get the chairs to be at a good overall height to make it easy to play without standing up or overreaching ect.
Relax body....

Stools... Needs to be high enough for bar stools...
Also, needs to have a cover. Hydraulics should do it... And it should sink into the floor when not in use... Ceiling if absolutely necessary.
Will it have a Hemi?
The 2nd design looks much better ![]()
I always felt that space miniature games should come with a black tablecloth in the box.
