So I have been transporting my ship collection in a rad briefcase I found at goodwill but it currently doesn't have a good spot for the range ruler and 5 speed template.

I am wondering what I could pick up that would keep those safe but not be so tall as to bar me from closing the case? Honestly a small case I could fit all of the templates in would be ideal, because that would free up space in the larger tackle box for more ships/dials/cards. Preferably something that would protect the cardboard pieces from bending. What ate you guys using do you have any ideas?

Get one of those cardboard tubes with the plastic caps that they use for posters.

Cut it to the length of a range ruler.

Everything fits in just fine. That's what me and my son use.

That's what I do. Key priority is to keep all my templates together. The last thing I want to have happen, is to go to a game find my str-5 or range ruler missing.
