I arrived to the game with wave 4, so for me it has been always the time of the turrets anyways, i am just doing a satire, i should had been more clear.Haven't we been in that since wave 2?The age of the Swarm is over.
The time of the Turrets has come!
At least in my local.
This ion torp is not much different from the Assault missile, good when you get the ideal conditions, overpriced when you do not. There will be ships that can make use of it regardless, but i do not see it becoming something so standard that it can make completely dissappear swarms.
Ion Torpedoes Spoiled!
I just can't get all caught up in the hype of this card. The best opportunity to use this torpedo is probably during Alpha Strike while your opponent is still in formation. However, all you're doing is making his squad go 1 forward for his next turn (he probably would've done that maneuver anyway). If you hold onto the torpedo for later, you run the risk of ioning one of your other ships as formations break up.
If I were to choose between Assault Missiles or Ion Torpedoes, I'd probably go for the missile to inflict damage early on.
I'm getting impression that Fantasy Flight wants the only competitive Imperial lists to be phantoms and firspray lists.
Edit: that or the imp epic comes with a boost for ties and this is to even that out.
Edited by All Shields ForwardI wonder how many ion tokens come with the set that includes that card...
Hmm, Decimator. Only one. Eep!
Edited by PygonI'm just excited to finally have a use for all my plastic ion tokens. I have about ten of the blasted things.

I'm sorry to be blunt, but this is an entirely thoughtless thing to say. Ion Torpedoes, Ruthlessness, etc. will almost certainly not make swarm lists unplayable, since Assault Missiles have been around since Wave 2 and haven't done so, and Proton Bombs have been around since Wave 3 and haven't done so.
But even accepting for the sake of argument that swarms are gone forever, a statement that only "phantoms and firspray lists" will be competitive is tantamount to saying not only that Lambda lists, Bomber lists, Decimator lists, high-PS Interceptor or Interceptor/Vader lists, and Defender lists are not competitive at the moment--but that they could never become competitive if the swarm were suddenly removed from the picture.

I don't know about needing the ideal. Even 2 ioned ships is a big deal. 5 points for a 4 attack torpedo that ionizes is better than proton torpedo in my book. Although nowhere near as useful as flechettes.

But, remember the effects of Ion tokens. Likely not ideal to unload a bunch of Ion Torpedoes in an Alpha Strike, as the extra tokens are wasted. So, load your Bomber wingmen or X-wing Buddies with Flechette Torpedoes and target the other ships.
Ion and stress an entire formation in the first combat round, K-turn, and demolish their aces as they all drift forward, defenseless.
That was my thought immediately as soon as I saw this card, because I am with you, flechette torpedoes are fantastic. And these work great alongside Flechettes!
PS, 1000th post here on the X-wing Forums! Here's to another thousand posts and countless games. As always, Fly Casual.

I clearly said competitive, not unplayable. People will still play swarm and often do well, but it seems to me that there has been a lot of new cards meant to directly counter the swarm. Camels, straws and what not.
Also your logic is off in regards to pure interceptor, lambdas and loaded out bombers. If they already had the ability to be competitive on their own we would see more of them i lists on their own. However we do not. In competitive lists we see them as part of a mini swarm, or the case of bombers naked and in a swarm.

So people will still play swarm and win, but the swarm also won't be competitive?

However we do not. In competitive lists we see them as part of a mini swarm, or the case of bombers naked and in a swarm.
The fact that many players prefer a particular list archetype (maybe it's well known as a strong list, and those players have a lot of experience playing it) has an effect on the frequency with which they appear in competitive events. So the fact that a particular kind of list isn't seen very often doesn't necessarily indicate that it's not a strong list--just that it's not being played.
Additionally, the fact that hybrid lists can be successful contributes to my point. Hybrid lists are logically less vulnerable to anti-swarm upgrades than a full swarm; introducing more anti-swarm upgrades accordingly increases the diversity of lists. If swarms leave the metagame (which they won't), something is going to pop up to replace them; you're asserting without evidence that it will be Phantoms and Firesprays.
And finally (again), you're implying that not only are all lists other than swarms, Phantoms, and Fireprays uncompetitive, but that FFG either can't or won't do anything to make them more competitive in the future. And you're doing so as part of a complaint about a deliberate move on FFG's part to strengthen lists that haven't been competitive in the past against some of the most common competitive game elements.
