Why is availability an issue?

By VNV, in X-Wing

After 20+ years I've had enough of games workshop and am in the process of getting into x-wing. I got myself the core set and found it really easy to get into. No painting, modelling etc... I do love it. The only problem I have come across is the availability of various expansions and in particular the millenium falcon. Is it normal for expansions to go out of stock and stay out of stock for what seems like long periods if time, or have I just got into it too late and missed out on them?

Because everybody wants it.

To expand, not only does everybody want it to play with it, usually in multiples, there's also I think a healthy modding group that buys the models, especially Falcons. And then there's the fact that it's hand made, that takes time.

First of all welcome to X-Wing and congratulations on escaping the dying behemoth that is Games Workshop. As for ships, they are out there. If you do a search online you should be able to find what you're looking for.

Oh, and don't fret, eventually things will get back in stock, it just takes a bit of time.

I misused the force here.

Yes it if unfortunately normal. They produce stuff in waves (not to be confused with the expansion term waves) rather than constantly. Moving away from GW you will see this is common amongst most miniature games companies. Malifaux (from) Wyrd has an even worse stock problem currently as the company is so small in comparison to its demand (unlike FFG which is a pretty large and well established company), that its entire backlog of 2nd edition rule books sold out almost instantly, and it was almost 2-3 months before they were able to get enough out there, in order to be able to have some sit on LGS shelves for any length of time.

According to some sources, there may be as many as 20-25 people playing this game.

There was a pretty good stock of everything, then when Wave 4 hit, a large part of the metagame shifted to be based on the YT-1300, so the demand shot up. It will get back in stock everywhere, it just takes time.

:o Wow, that many?

I think my FLGS has a falcon left... and a couple Lambdas...

Yeah i left GW behind aswell buddy its just gotten really bad rule wise and really stupid price wise.

FFG unlike GW does not make models themselves they have to have them made to order, the company is constantly rebalancing the game (unlike GW that has given up on balance) so at different times different units become popular and so hard to find, and they've underestimated how popular x-wing is and will be, they are working to get stuff out there but we keep buying it all.

They are reprinting the falcon and it will be out again Q3 this year so don't buy an over priced one hang on and get it for £20.

My FLGS has none, but one of the webshops here in the Netherlands still has 11 Falcons and 5 Lambda's for $36 each, which is not an unreasonable price here, rather on the cheap side really.

Thanks for the responses. I'm more than happy to wait for expansions. Like I said just wasn't sure whether they had been and gone. It makes a nice change from having it practically forced on me.

Also I don't know where you are in the world but Barnes & Nobel Bookstores (www.barnesandnobel.com) does stock X-Wing items. Just checked their site and most stuff is available, including the Decimator and YT-2400, available for order.

The only ones I paid full price for ($30 here in the US) is for the ones I got at that FLGS, but I have gotten a few cheaper from miniatures market. I like supporting my local shop, bit I cant afford full price all the time.

Hooray for quitting GW! They are the worst. I love them.

Same here. I left GW when X-Wing hit the shelves and haven't looked back and I'm not the only one. At my FLGS X-Wing and 40k are played on the same night and there are more people playing X-Wing than 40k. This is a good thing IMO....less people playing GW's overpriced and under playtested material will hopefully lead to the companies demise.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the switch many of us have made. There's definitely a rotation to the models for availability so pick em up when you can. People have mentioned it before but Barnes and noble sometimes has back stock or is slower to sell out of a product.

Yeah, it usually turns out that $ to € is on a 1 to 1 ratio so over here we pay more than you guys, not wholly unreasonable of course.

I tend to favour my shop, but sometimes you just can't because they can't get it in stock.

I see you are a UKnian.

I can recommend Chaos Cards, The Dice Shop Online and Element Games.

Unfortunately none of them have the falcon expansion at the minute, the falcon seems to be getting a re-print with some card fixes (and I guess the new barrel roll rules)

To that list i'd also like to add gifts for geeks.

They dont have the falcon but you can pre-order and they don't take the money till it ships.

I found myself in a similar situation when I started playing X-wing towards the end of last year.

The latest releases were still fairly easy to get hold of but some of the earlier expansions like the TIE Adv and Y-Wing were as rare as rocking horse manure - then once I decided I wanted another B-Wing and TIE Bomber, I found they'd run out of stock everywhere I looked too.

Given time more stock arrived and I was able to get all the expansions I wanted (and probably more than I needed lol!).

A combination of shopping around and being patient will serve you well

I sold all of my 40k stuff but I kept my FB armies, They seemed to have left it largely alone so it's still fine.

Don't worry, GW will eventually get around to screwing up Fantasy Battles to the point it's unplayable in the name of "Forging A Narrative" like they did to 40k.

FFG does an excellent job of keeping everyone up to date on the status of where in the production status all their new releases and reprints are. Just go here: http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_upcoming.asp and pick "Miniatures" from the centre drop down, and then click "Apply".

Presto. A full listing of products and, roughly, when they're expected to be back at the FFG warehouse and onwards to your suppliers.

Fly casual!

Well they cant reprint 40k so soon so a summer release of WFB to boost flagging sales is likely, and yeah it'll be terrible.

also Amazon UK has stock, looks like totalwargamer.co.uk also has stock (but check with them before you buy - they have a habit of sometimes not marking OOS items as OOS),
