X-Wing v. Armada: Will it scratch a different itch?

By patox, in X-Wing

Armada looks terrific.

X-Wing has been awesome.

But is it basically the same game, but at a different scale?

For example, as a former 40k player, I loved my 28mm armies and pushing them across the battlefield and rolling dice to attack the other side. As awesome as Epic 40k looked with their 6mm armies, I couldn't bring myself to buy into a new system. I didn't have time to play and paint a whole other game – a game which was also pushing miniatures across the battlefield and rolling dice.

On the other hand, I own Blood Bowl and Blood Bowl Team Manager (a great FFG game.) Even though they're the same universe, the two games fulfill different needs. They scratch different itches.

So is their room on your tabletop for both X-Wing and Armada?

Probably not for me, but I will be buying some of the ships just to have. I'll probably go back to board games exclusively before I buy back in to another minis game, especially in the same universe.

Not to mention Armada looks more complex...more akin to other minis games...and therefore not as easy to get to the table.

I think it might scratch a different itch, but that will depend on the people you play it with.

I'm looking for a more immersive experience. Many X-Wing players are not. Perhaps Armada can offer that.

Armada looks great, but I think I'll wait and see. Currently I barely get time for a game of X-wing as it stands, I don't want to complicate it further.

It looks like it will be a little more tactical. Angles of attack and such will matter due to having different shields and weapins on different sides.

I can see myself scratching my Star Trek-esque combat itch with the game without having to brave Attack Wing :P

Thanks FFG!

The games appear to use many of the same elements, but also to have very significant differences. For example movement appears to work differently. On top of that the ships firing arcs appear to be arranged quite differently. There also appear to be different types of weapon systems such as different attach strengths against fighter groups vs. large ships. I think it will be different enough as to offer something very different, but equally interesting.

This is a more strategic level game and is already catching the attention of some locals that wanted massive battles! A whole squad of fighters is now a base vs XWing where a ship is a ship.

It's like WWII currently, FOW is company size units, and Bolt Action where a unit is typically a platoon. FOW's infantry bases are teams, BA a fig is a man...

Each person has their own preference and the itches need to be scratched! :)

Well, I for one am thrilled to see a fleet based game at last. This has been thrashed about on here every time someone asks for a Star Destroyer. Now you can have one. Or two. Or three. Can't wait for the release.

If armada came out first id be jumping to x wing, I really like the small fighter l/squadron oriented aspect of x wing, that's what drew me in and will probably keep me here.

X-Wing is great...but my big thing is NAVAL COMBAT.

Battlefleet Gothic

Starfleet Battles

...both those games are dead.

...now it looks like Armada.

Definatly a different itch. I am slowly becoming an FFG only gamer. I need to hurry up and get my latest 40k army painted....so I can sell it online to buy this stuff.

big 360 degree slug matches have been done in the aforementioned star-fleet battles.. they even had attack shuttles and fighters... game was tedious and the miniatures were lacking detail.. detail that you can only get in a bigger scale!! granted just about anything would have been an improvement on the Starfleet battles miniatures.. I had both the plastic ones and the cast ones.. Armada does look more streamlined than Starfleet battles though... wonder if they would branch out and make a new version of starfleet battles? that would be cool as the amount of ships to chose would be HUGE. although the whole out of scale thing i still don't care for much...

Something has to give ... I say bye bye Epic play.

Something has to give ... I say bye bye Epic play.

Or, OR, FFG may have yet another highly successful game in the Star Wars universe, raking in still more cash we didn't know we had in our pockets.

Seriously, quit with the doom and gloom crap.

(P.S. I don't even play Epic.)

I can totally see people playing both in the same campaign. Doing large Armada games and then 'zooming in' to play X-Wing and see the smaller battles within the large fleet engagments.

I think it will scratch an itch but won't replace X-Wing. Though it looks similar I think it's different. Didn't I read only six rounds? I'm still going to buy it but it will dominate my game time like X-Wing.

Just sell them naked. Most of your potential buyers will strip the paint of your mini's to repaint them in their own colours anyway.

While it's too early to declare the doom a certainty, I will admit that Armada poses a risk for Epic. Most of Epic's target market will be those people who love big ships, and big ships fighting against big ships.

X-wing, so far, hasn't offered us that much. I've found that a lot of people play their games Empire VS rebel. But without an Imperial big ship, Epic battles haven't seen a lot of play. Assuming the Imperial Epic ships will follow FFG's usual announcement -> release schedule, the Imperial Epic ships will arrive around the same time as Armada does.

Now those who wanted Epic fights are given a choice. $90 dollars for one Imperial ship so they can fight their friends' rebel ship? Or $100 for a complete starter set that offers them what they wanted Epic to be in the first place?

People won't throw away X-wing, but they might switch to Armada for their large-scale fleet battles. Time will tell what choice people will make, but there is a risk.

Are actually talking about Star Fleet Battles from Amarillo Design Bureau or something else with a similar name? Because SFB ships have very few 360 weapons, arcs were complicated but very important. Also, as far as I know, the game has never had plastic miniatures, and is played with card board counters, not miniatures, by default. The minis have always been just for those people who really wanted to add some POP to their games (and were really crappy detail, but that was a fault of the sculpts and manufacturers, not the scale). SFB minis also keep to a pretty consistant scale except for shuttles/fighters and stations.

Looks sweet, it could go ether way BUT it looks more modern / futuristic to me.

I think ill skip buying wave 5 in order to have some more money to try armada out. It looks fun, and even though its pricy, I paid for both huge ships and this core set looks like a lot more fun than I got out of either of those so far, so I say its worth it. If anything, ill have an awesome FFG star destroyer model.

Plus, armada looks like a great place to have an admiral thrawn card.... finally

They're different systems and X-Wing is FFG's most lucrative game. Just because some players will only play one or the other doesn't mean FFG is going to stop cashing in on X-Wing.

SFB did have some plastic Federation ships (CA, DN, DD & Tug) from molds done by Franz Joseph. ADB had a pretty big stock of them at one point, but they're gone now.

A couple years ago, ADB made a deal with Mongoose Publishing to make a new series of miniatures, using CAD and 3D printing for the masters. The detail is leaps and bounds better than the older minis.

Well, no. The idea that Armada would ruin X-wing is silly. Hence why I specified that Armada might pose a risk for Epic.

Epic format so far doesn't seem to be quite as popular as the standard format. And with Armada on the horizon, those that do play Epic might (emphasis on might) shift focus to Armada, as it gives them more of what they want.

That doesn't mean those players won't stop playing X-wing though. Just that they might play Armada over Epic.

I definitely won't be abandoning X-wing, but now there just isn't enough reason to buy into Epic format.

My only regret is not having the Porkins, Wes, and Hobbie pilot cards, but I can live with that.

If they release Empire Huge ships, I'm 100% buying them. But I'm also 100% buying Armada. As awesome as Armada looks at this moment, you can't beat having 14 inch cruisers towering over your small snubfighters right there on the tabletop.

However questionably balanced the Huge ships are aside, Armada appears to have a completely different feeling from Epic X-Wing, with passing down orders through the command chain, what appears to be the lack of special abilities or named pilots for the Huge ships, etc.

Epic's biggest enemy is itself, not really Armada.

I agree with this, though I think there was only so far they could go with Epic to begin with. I will almost certainly get the Imperial huges when they come out, but my expectation of regularly playing them will be small. I also don't think they can realistically go too huge (e.g. Nebulon B) with huge.

So, I think of Armada as being there for the people who wanted to go bigger than was practical for X-Wing.
