it's difficult to get purchases wrong (as long as they're within your budget) FFG have done a good job of practically every release

I'd only add the following caveat. Do not get more then 1 HWK-290 or Tie Advanced to start. Both are good ships but while you can have and most times want 2-4 of a given ship, but not of those 2.

I agree half way...two Advances currently are not needed! However, two HWKs hit our tables fairly often currently and they do ok!

Ultimately, if you get into the game you will want at least one ship of each class. However, to start out get Two Core Sets and decide which faction you prefer to play.

Empire: TIE Fighter Expansion, Slave 1 Expansion, TIE Advanced

Rebel: X-Wing Expansion, Y-Wing, Falcon.

That is what I started out with and it helps introduce a wide range of upgrades and maneuvers.Of course you can get what you want and enjoy the game. Have fun playing!
