Edited by XTREM1337Do you lean towards rebels or imperials?
Buy all the things!
For imps, start out with:
2x core set
TIE fighter expansion
TIE Interceptor expansion
Imperial Aces
Slave-1 expansion
A rebel dirty cheap and still tough list is x2 b wings and x2 xwings
2xcore
at least one of every ship of your chosen faction.
Buy the ships you like, you can make most of them work if you put some effort into it. Slave-1 and Millennium Falcon are nice and safe choices for a beginner, if a little overused.
You will want one of everything eventually just so you have all the cards for your builds and eventually multiples of certain ones!
Which side do you plan on using in a tournament first? What is your budget? Buy accordingly!
The reality is that if you keep playing you will wind up with everything. But one of everything is solid to start and so is just going with what you like. And there are plenty of list builders around that you can use to help figure out what you need
Buy:
1) What you find fun!
2) What matches your style of play.
If you are not sure yet...try a few list builders.
http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/ is browser-based and lists the cards by expansion so you know which ones you have to buy for tournaments.
Core Set given is. Beyond that your path your own is. ![]()
Basic advice?
2nd Core set and then...
If you like dodging around play Imperials.
Buy: TIE xpac, TIE Interceptor xpac, Imp Aces
If you prefer vessels that soak damage and can dish it out play Rebels.
Buy: Falcon, 2xB-Wing xpac. Reb Aces (not released)
If you like lots of little ships (swarms): both.
Imp: None between 2 core sets and TIE xpac you already have 5.
Reb: Z-95's. 3-4 of them.
Lastly, if you prefer bringing peace, order, and justice to the galaxy play the law-abiding Empire. ![]()
Check out Episode 1 of NOVA Squadron Radio, we cover this exact topic!

If you're like the rest of us, at least one of everything.
Edit: Not that you need everything, but you will want it, and will get it over time. Welcome to the addicition hobby!
Thanks all I'll order my stuff
ciao
Buy a tackle box to haul all your stuff around in. I have a Plano 3700 and I love it.
Arrrrrgh! I have to know! Who're ya gunna fly? The righteous and honourable, peaceful and upstanding, generous and beloved empire... or those other guys... The scruffy ones with no sense of style....?
The scruffy ones with no sense of style....?
Who you calling scruffy looking?
If you want to play Rebels, the cheapest way to build a solid tournament list is:
1x Core
1x X-Wing Expansion (or a second core set)
1x Millenium Falcon
Then you can run a variation of the "Han Shoots First" list, with the Falcon (either with Han or another named pilot) plus two X-wing escorts.

I'm afraid it's true... Seen nerf herders wi more class...;-)
...now that imperial uniform... Very handsome....

Yeah, those Scum don't even know how to dress right...pitiful.
We knew enough to put on the boots that stomped all over the Empire.
As of today I just started as well. I picked up one starter set, one extra set of dice and quite a bit of Imperial stuff, minus the Tie Advance as the store did not have that in stock.
Welcome to the game.
After spending weeks reading and watching reports and videos I have come to the conclusion that you can do no wrong with 2 core sets and at least one of every ship... They all come with cards that you will need.
Welcome to the game. I am glad I am not the only one jumping into the deep end of the pool 2 years after the fact.

Never! Luke Skywalker will become one with the dark side and the Empire will crush the New Republic! Muahahaha.
Anyone can get a Job done-it's doing it with style that makes the difference... As an example, what has more style; "target lock!" Or "do a barrel roll!".....?
(I'll give you a clue; "target lock" is very drab... Very drab indeed...)
And for those actually seeking advice and not my Karl largerfeld impressions it's difficult to get purchases wrong (as long as they're within your budget) FFG have done a good job of practically every release (that stupid Ewing cockpit cannon notwithstanding-although I suppose you can't really blame FFG for that one). Money no object? "All of the things" as Glassjaw said, have a normal budget? Pick a faction and get what appeals from them-don't go buying multiples straight away though, (plus the obligatory 2 core sets of course). On a tight budget? Don't go for xwing/tie expansions just to get the cards/upgrades in the expansion packs as all that info is out there online so you could play an expansion pilot easily enough with your core set ships in a friendly non-tournament game.
Above all...? Enjoy! It's a class game and a friendly forum (try epic as soon as you're able-it's a kickass bloodbath-team up to get the ships if needed) and last of all...? Win/lose but do it in style:-)
On the other hand, you could save your money, time, cut down yourstress, and hang out with a better crowd and play Dungeons & Dragons. Lol just kidding, this game is great.
