That Moment you Know in a Game

By zhentil, in X-Wing

We have all been there. That sense of dread or optimism when holding those 3 or 4 dice in our hand knowing if we can get those 2 evades or 3 hits on 4 dice we will win that game. We have been on both ends. I have been on the receiving end of 2 hits on 4 dice and thinking hey, i got 5 dice to evade and watching myself roll yatzee with blanks.

But there are subtle times when you look back on a game and go, wait...nope.. when i missed that roll 2 turns ago. We have all cursed our dice, or maybe others have cursed them we don't know it lol.

This is just a spot to park your frustrations of your dice and maybe shame as they deserve lol.

Seeing all blanks on 5 agility dice is why I stoped using Stealth Device.

Rolling 5 Attack dice with Echo who has a target lock and a focus to roll 1 hit and 4 blanks, pick up the 4 dices and roll them again for target lock and roll 4 MORE BLANKS!

True story!

If I'm blaming the dice for my loss, I need to go back and figure out how I built the squad wrong, and what tactical errors I made in moving.

In my experience there's no such thing as luck.

no one is blaming their dice for a loss,

they are simply saying that everyone has that moment of frustration,

because dice have odds on coming up certain results, and the odds of rolling 4 out of 5 blanks has to be super low, but it can and will happen. its just that what the OP is saying, is that we all know that time when it happens when we really need it to, or when we really don't need it too.

Look kid, Hoky dice apps and ancient netlists are no match for good tactics on the table.

Ain't no crazy bad luck controls MY destiny. It's just a bunch of complaints and nonsense.

You win good sir, well played!

Good on Vassal is one thing.

Good on the table? That's something else.

I love one-upping dice stories. :D

Best streaks to date.

On defense: 11 evade dice (3 ships, in order, fighting turret builds.) All blanks. Fortunately I was paranoid and had them all take evade actions beforehand.

On offense: Space Cow HLC with FCS, Fett at RB1 with Focus/TL. All blanks. Re-roll. All blanks save for 1 eyeball.

I'm sure there's others with better ones...and of course these were countered by games where I just couldn't get hit or didn't miss. All part of the fun :D

Was playing a smuggler mission the other day and had an ORS trying to get off the board. I had 4 health left and was only a 3 straight from the board edge. He managed to land his Defender at range 1. I was so close to blocking him. He managed to roll all 4 hits and I missed the one possible evade. It was exciting that it came down to one shot. Made for an exciting game. But like others have mentioned, hindsight has shown me strategic failures that would have let me get away had I not made them.

Worst luck I have ever had was at Imdaar Alpha. I lost due to losing 1 Y-Wing in the second turn. Three ties shot it at range three. Two of them got critical hits, and both were direct hit.

I then proceeded to fly better than ever have in my life with my 2 B-Wings and X-Wing. It was beautiful, and my opponent was sweating bullets every turn that I would anticipate him, avoid all of his arcs but keep him firmly in mind. It should have been in the bag with flying like that. He did not get another shot off the entire game. I shot every round.

I sent 28 DICE AT HOWLRUNNER THAT GAME! We kept track. (though Howlrunner did have a stealth device). Every turn I would roll 9 dice (and twice at range 1, hence the total). Howlrunner finally went down turn 6, and the round ended. I had lost 1 Y-Wing, he had lost Howlrunner, and I lost the match.

My mind was blown. My opponents mind was blown. And then we laughed and laughed. Thankfully, I have not seen or experienced something like that before or since.

What about bad on vassal... does that still apply?

Most recent example comes from last night, where my HLC w/ Focus shot on a stressed (and therefore decloaked) Whisper... He had 2 hull left, and I needed to at least pump 1 damage in so I could kill him with the Ion afterwards. Hit blank blank blank... evade evade... I had a 93% of doing at least 1 damage. Needless to say he went on to win then.

Now with that being said... I am not blaming the loss on missing that attack. I did not have a contingency plan in place for what if I didn't kill Whisper, which I should have (though a 3Fv2F, IonF vs 2, 4F vs. 2, and 2F vs. 2 should be able to do 4 damage!)... I wouldn't change what I did before that point, but I didn't play well enough from behind to even challenge. And that is why I lost.

I have had many of games that I can blame a win or loss on one roll of dice.

I tell new players to rely on hull, shields, and good flying and not on those **** green dice.

I am a firm believer of Murphy and that he hates me personally. My worst dice streak was a game of Flames of War where I failed a 4+ test on a D6 and with a re-roll 7 turns in a row! That's 14 failed 4+ tests! I do believe the odds of that happening is 0.000061%.

Best dice roll I have ever had; against Fel.

Sometimes blaming the dice is a psychological crutch.

But I had a match recently where, in five rounds of attacks with a Firespray, I couldn't manage to kill a heavily damaged HWK. As a result, I lost by 6 points instead of winning by 25. The odds were literally 50:1 in my favor. Sometimes it really is the dice.

Luck is just one of my many skills.

Gotta take the rough with the smooth, while there are ways to enhance the situation, you are still at the beck and call of lady luck.

Like i was saying before, you can fly awesome and get behind your opponent and for some reason the dice just hate you that day or your friend did some crazy black ju ju magic and you can't even roll 15% on your dice. I think we have all had that dice day. Thanks for the posts guys, most amusing.

Popular opinion is that the dice are 25% or more of the game... The dice will then decide ~25% of games. You can fly perfect and not get the kill only to continue to fly perfect and roll all blanks when they do get a shot on you; never believe a person who claims "you shouldn't have been in arc at all!" They are either liars or playing against some pretty subpar opponents.

Sometimes it's a mistake you made a few turns back, sometimes you can make no mistakes and random chance will screw you over.

My first outing with my brand new Phantom, it got one-shot in the second turn of it's first game without firing a shot. Nothing more frustrating than that. Seemed all I could roll that day was blanks, blanks and more blanks. Some days it just doesn't go your way.

In my experience there's no such thing as luck.

In my experience there is only luck just all bad

If I didn't have bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

Luck. Don't talk to me about luck.

Oops, wrong franchise.

I always say that you can't confuse play and tactics with luck. As long you do everything right, that's important. We can never choose whether the dice are with us or against us.

I blame those damnable midichloriens.
