Getting Into The Game, Need Some Advice

By BigKahuna, in X-Wing

Well one of the main reasons I want to have a self sufficient collection (with both sides more or less balanced with each other) and continue to collect in this way is because I don't want to have a collection that requires me to find another person who collects to have a match. I want it so that if my son comes to me and wants to play, we have everything we need right here, as well when random opportunities come up to play. Around my house gaming is happening rather randomly all the time, but I can't always count on people from my gaming group to have their miniatures with them. So its important the collection balanced.

Which is why for my next round of purchases I want to do *** for tat purchases to keep things level, so I'm trying to figuire what ships sort of match each other between rebels and Imperials.

For example clearly 1 X-Wing is worth roughly 2 Tie Fighters (not exact and Im sure people could make arguments about it one way or the other), but just eyeballing it, its about right.

I'm wondering what is a batch for

Tie Bombers

Tie Interceptors

Tie Advanced (I plan to buy one because my son insists on having Darth Vader in our collection, he's 10, he cares ZERO about peoples opinion about balance or quality of the unit so its a done deal).

I was thinking for the Bomber either a Y wing or a B Wing

For the Interceptor I was thinking A-Wings

and for the Tie Advanced I was thinking a E-Wing or perhaps a Z-95

If you are buying a collection that can provide for two players, disregard my post about a second core set not being necessary right away. It's a great purchase then.

A Vader Tie Advanced won't match well in terms of points with a Z-95 (unless you get a couple, and even then you'd need either three generics or one of the named Zs and a 2nd Z), so the E-Wing is your better option. (And BTW, it's the Advanced people don't like...Vader is a good pilot and is not dead weight).

Interceptors and A-Wings are currently in the same ballpark of points and acquire similar upgrades. (I say currently because Rebel Aces will change that).

Bombers don't match up great with B-Wings in terms of points, unless you spend several points to upgrade the bomber and not the B-Wing, so a Y-Wing might be better there.

Obviously all of the above is just speaking in terms of generics (except Vader) and no upgrades because with better pilots and/or upgrades you can always even things out in a balanced ways (except when going from a ship like the Z-95 or TIE to Vader).

First welcome to the game!

Regarding supply. Certain ships (Interceptors, Falcon, B-Wings) tend to sell out due to popularity. However instead of just game stores, check out major bookstores and toy stores. I was able to find a complete set of every ship just by hitting a Barnes and Noble bookseller. Granted you pay full retail...but it's not e-steal...er ebay.

On purchases. All of this is my opinion so YMMV.

I'd pick up an E-Wing to counter Vader. They don't fly the same but the E-Wing has a lot of toys and costs about the same in terms of building a fleet.

Bomber-wise I'd probably proxy a few or watch more videos before deciding to get them. I picked up one and it's still in the wrapper :D Every time I want a bomb...I end up fielding the Firespray instead. But I'd definitely get a Y-Wing rebel-side to balance things.

If you are going to buy an A-Wing...buy one...same goes for B-Wing. And then buy Rebel Aces when it comes out. The Aces packs tend to have more option cards. Likewise TIE Interceptor...buy one and then buy Imperial Aces.

If you want the option of "swarm vs. swarm" pick up 3-4 of Z-95's. But given your budget I'd probably just get one and then proxy the rest.
And oh..buy a space cow. *waves hand* you want a space cow (Lambda Shuttle). :D
