What was your best last ditch effort in a game?

By GannerRhysode, in X-Wing

So, I was running an elite pilot list vs my buddy's elite pilot list the other night and it came down to each of us with one ship, no shields, and 2-3 hull each.

He shot at me, I took a crit that put my pilot skill at zero and left me with 1 hull. I fired back and dealt 2 damage to his ship, leaving him at one as well.

My maniacal laughing began at this point in time as I called on Darth Vader to rip his ship apart with the destructive power of the Force while saying, in my best Darth Vader voice, "I have you now."

So I took two damage (blowing up my ship) while dealing one crit (blowing up his ship).

It was glorious. My buddy thought he was going to win because his pilot skill and the crit I suffered insured that he would shoot first next round and I had no way of keeping him in my arc. He thought he would win the game by the hair of his chin but I snatched victory from him and left him with a tie.

He looked at me and said, "Why would you do that? You just killed your own ship."

My reply, "But did you beat me?"

:) It was glorious.

Nice

Sounds like a good game.

I had a game once where the only ship that survived was my biggs. Every other ship was dead. After it was over on felt like it would be a good trophy or achievement

Close game

Best kindnd of games are the close ones imo

Haha that's so ironic that it's awesome.

My best comeback ever was when I was down to a single firespray...don't remember the pilot or upgrades, but I'm pretty sure I had recon specialist at a minimum. I was going against 3 rebel ships as I had only destroyed one all game. I think two of them were bwings.

I somehow manage to avoid most of their fire while slowly taking them down and ended up winning the game.

I played in a tournament back in June where I had a tricked out Echo with a Howlrunner mini-swarm vs Chewbacca with a blue and a rookie (don't remember what upgrades he had). Anyway first round of combat I positioned echo to have a range 2 shot at chewie out of range of the blue and just barely range 3 of the rookie (slightly misjudged that distance). Figured I'd take one or two shots on the chin with echo, but I'd be fine.

Howlrunner had swarm tatics, so her, an academy, and echo pelted the falcon and managed to burn through all the shields, then my BSP stuck a damage to it. I had recon spec. on echo, so I had a leftover focus to use on defense, it pays off and chewbacca totally whiffs his shot.

Range 3 rookie is up next, hit-hit-crit. Well, that could have went better, but figure out of 5 green dice I should get one evade and just lose shields. I rolled 5 damned blanks. Ok, this sucks, bye bye shields hello critical hit. I flip over the critical hit aaaand direct hit..... I just got freaking one shotted at range 3 by a rookie pilot...

His blue whiffs and my last academy sticks another damage to chewie. I figured I'm toast at this point, but I throw all of my ties at the falcon so I can feel like it wasn't a total curb stomping.

What followed was almost the comeback of a century. With just the mini-swarm I managed to vaporize chewie, blast the rookie (revenge!), and we got down to one ship each. He has his last blue with one hull point left and I had an academy tie with one hull left right when time was called. We played it out after time (just to see what would happen) and he just managed to get my last tie.

It's definitely not over until it's over with this game.

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

My buddy pointed out that biggs was the only one left.

At one point I flew him away from the battle because he had one hull left. After my other ships were destroyed I just managed to fly him right and minimize shots against him.

Hands down my closest game I ever played was the following.

Camera focuses in on Soontir Fel equipped with a stealth device and push the limit. He has just watched both of his wing-men, Darth Vader and Turr Phennir, get wasted by 4 Royal Guard pilots with push the limit. Only one Royal has been hit. Soontir then strips down to boxers to reduce drag (because that's how space physics work, you don't question these things) and uses his boost and barrel roll arc dancing to murder 4 royal interceptors and escape from the jaws of defeat. It is a story we have passed down in our local game store for ages (and by that I mean since like late May).

I had a game awhile ago where I was running a pretty standard 4 Rebel ship list against a bomber squad. Their ordnance was very effective, and it ended up being 2 Scimitars and Jonus (2hull) vs. an untouched Green w/ PTL. I turtled up for the first few turns before I killed Jonus, and then pretty much arc dodged at least 1 of the bombers each turn, and slowly managed to kill both Scimitars.

I make sure that the imp player never forgets the moment 3/4 of his list was single-handedly destroyed by a lone A wing.

Great stories, guys! Keep it up! I especially like the ones where the Empire wins :P

Khyros, your story was good too :P:)

When you have an operational TIE Phantom left, nothing is truly a last ditch effort. The rest of my squad got vaporized, leaving a 2 hull Whisper to take apart the entire enemy squad (3 Rebel ships). It wasn't even a stretch for Whisper.

K-turning through an asteroid in order to have a chance to fire back at the Phantom that was dismantling my 4X squad. It didn't work, but it took my opponent by surprise.

There's been more than one occasion where most of my squad was still intact and my opponent was down to Fel, and even then I would be worried of losing the game. Luckily that never happened though.

Yesterday I was down to my Blue Squad Pilot B-Wing 4hp left with AS vs Echo with ACD FCS and VI with 1 hull. i had some fancy manuvering but i was down to 2 hull with a -1 agi crit. i did a BR and a 1 bank and put me right next to an asteroid, echo moved and either could be right infront of me with 1agi (also had -1 agi crit). Echo could barrel roll and hit the asteroid next turn and probably die or could cloak right infront of me and probably die. I was able to talk him into cloaking, its better to die in a blaze of glory than to a space rock we decided. I roll 4 dice vs his 3 agi, i rolled 1 hit and 3 blanks. he rolled two evades and ended up killing me the next turn with 2 crits and 3 hits via target lock and focus.

devistating but i flew really well. possible could have won if i hadnt made rule based mistakes in the early game.

I watched a Y-wing that had it's ion canon disabled via crit go toe to toe with a full health phantom.

The y-wing k-turned right behind the phantom after a decloak and one shot it, all crits, point blank.

So was the bwing down to 2 hull, or 3 hull and 1 shield?

In either case, I would have taken the shot with echo. It's range 1 so 5 dice, and you have 0 defense dice with the crit. Plus he had an action. Just needs to get 4 out of 5 hits which is doable, if he has a target lock already from FCS then with a focus it's extremely doable.

That was the set up, echo was facing away from the b wing

eh the whole ordeal started with 3Hull and 1 shield and i took a damage and a crit a turn or two before this turn in question

Not really so much last ditch, as I'd won anyway. but this did get me the last ship I needed for a 100pt win:

Last roll of the game (timer had ended so we were just ending the round) my academy TIE shot and killed Chewie. All came down to 2 attacks at range 3 vs 2 evades. I rolled 2 hits, he rolled 1 evade and a blank, with no tokens to save him.

I was getting whipped, and I ended up just with Roark vs a 2 health stressed and ionized soontir and a full health turr I managed o surprised them with my dial and kill both for the win

I'd been pushed back into my base by the Panzer Elite, unable to hold even a small bit of territory without my vehicles being destroyed by the huge Flak 88 that had been built in the centre of the map. So I marshalled the meager survivors of my force, charged that gun and thanks to some amazing micromanagement managed to take over enough antiarmor and machine guns to hold the area and crew that Flak. Turned it 180 and tore the enemy tank offensive to pieces. With me in control of their giant gun and keeping it in good repair, I swiftly retook the map and sailed to victory.

Oh wait, you mean X-wing...

I k-turned a dying bwing in front of a higher PS firespray. It was a big risk, because if the firespray did a 1 straight, I would have got a cluster missile up the engine.

Luckily, he flew past me and I ended in his rear arc. He brought me down to 1 hull (vs his 5) and would surely kill me next round. I had FCS equipped so I had a perma-lock on him. I took a range 1 shot and blank-crit-crit-crit. I rerolled for a 4th crit (!!!!!!!!) Vs 0 evades. The first 3 crits were incidentals and didn't really matter. The final crit...........................................................................................................................it's for the game.....................................................................................................................................................................this could be it........................................................................................................................................................................DIRECT HIT!!!!!!! 5 Damage!!!!

That's how I won a Z-95. Unfortunately, it was against a friend and my success guaranteed he went home empty handed. But it was a still a good game.

At an Assault on Imdaar event in the final game before the demo game, I was losing. I had a Rookie pilot with one shield versus a pair of Dagger Sqdn B-Wings on one and two hull respectively and a Rookie Pilot on full health. My opponent then made the mistake of assigning a K-turn on his Rookie when it already had a stress token. I assigned it a hard three which put it so close to the board edge that he couldn't stop his ship flying off the following turn. My Rookie then proceeded to beat both B-Wings taking them one one at a time thanks to asteroid placement and winning the game on one hull point.

it was a two versus two game, 200 points on either side of the table. one half of the opponent was a 7 tie swarm. The other was kath and a couple of royal guards. Our gallant heroes had a few Blue Squadrons with Fire control systems, with Grey Leader at the helm. Their allies were a pair of X-wings, an A-wing, and the Jedi Kyle Katarn. Right off the bat Horton Salm from downtown drops Mauler Mithel with a proton torp, but the battle was far from over. the B-wings were vanquished by concentrated fire from the interceptors and the X-wings fared only slightly better against the ravages of the swarm, but they do not die alone.

Outnumbered and outgunned, Horton and Kyle made a last ditch attack, Putting the bounty hunter, the interceptors, and nearly the entire swarm down before falling to a lack of green dice.

There I was, at my local Assault on Imdaar event, and my first real X-wing tournament. My squad consisted of Kath Scarlet, Soontir Fel, and a Royal Guard Pilot. I knew things would be tough when my opponent entered the field with a Han Solo and two ion-turreted Y-wings (seriously, a full half of the lists at my tournament had at least one falcon. I really chose the wrong list to fly).

I was proven right when my foe brought his turrets to bear against Soontir, and the Baron promptly gradually suffered a quick and painless slow, ion-y death. Meanwhile Kath and the Royal Guard were throwing all they had at the Falcon, trying to take the infamous smuggler down before things got too bad, but were both taking heavy fire themselves. Disheartened by the loss of Soontir, and nearly dead herself, Kath threw one last volley at Captain Solo, and scored 4 hits, including a crit. The crit turned out to be a Direct Hit, granting just barely enough damage to destroy the Falcon.

Unphased, the Y-wings avenged their fallen leader by destroying Kath, leaving my Royal Guard Interceptor alone and outgunned. The Guard managed to destroy one of the Y-wings, and bring the other down a few notches. It came down to his last Y-wing, with about 3 hull, versus my Royal Guard with 1 hull. The Royal guard shot first and scored two hits. 1 hull vs 1 hull. But then his Y-wing shot and scored the hit he needed to win.

As I stood to congratulate my opponent he cried, "Wait! The game isn't over yet! I may still concede." He explained that there was another Imdaar tournament that was scheduled to start in less than an hour at another store, which he also wanted to attend if he could. His win against me was just enough that he MIGHT be able to make it into the final four at our tournament, but if it wasn't, he definitely wanted to bail and go try his luck at the other tournament. We checked the rankings and the other games, and sure enough, if he won the game after mine he would probably be in the final four. Anyway, after making several phone calls to his friends and to the owner of the other game store, he finally decided- with just a minute or two left before time ran out- that he would NOT concede our game, and would continue to try his luck in our tournament.

So not really a comeback, but still, I was this close!

One of my first games in a three way duel of only 70 PTs and very little idea how the game worked. Took howl runner back stabber and vader. Howl runner takes two damage on the first engagement. I pull her out. Vader sillily chases a ship too far. Gets blown up on the k turn. Back stabber gets one shorted. The other two guys have full health ints and xwings. I flee and let then fight each other. One guy expects me to help him. I don't. Xwing guy miraculously dies. A one hp int now chases a line one hp howl runner across half the map.

I juke him on a turn and speed away from the duel. He pursues. I time for a range three shot. He moves first. Takes a forward and a barrel roll to fix his arc expecting me to turn. I k turn instead and I blast him for 2 lucky res dice against three unlucky greens.

Howl runner wins the game. :)
