For those of you who claim skill is everything...

By Ribann, in X-Wing

So far I rate this thread 3/10, and only because it's worth a few chuckles.

I rate it (3/8)^9... but never try to tell me the odds!

Is that how many successes Ribann rolled after picking the wrong maneuver?

F'ing lol. Dude, do you not play on Vassal? All you naysayers need to get on Vassal and play me. You think I'm just that bad, but I would school you in X-wing, but not one of you will have the balls to get on Vassal and play me. Hell, not one of you has the balls to play me on Vassal AND Skype with me. You would chicken out because you don't get out of your house and socialize.

Get on Vassal. Get on Skype. Play me. Get to know me. We'll play X-wing and have some beers while shooting the breeze on Skype.

Not one of y'all will do it.

This is all I hear whenever you post:

Who is the best troll, the troll or the troll that trolls the troll while the troll is trying troll ?

And OT :

It is a skirmish game with dice involved. Luck will always be able to decide games, you as a player try to mitigate it as much as you can, but sometimes you can't.

Oooh, shaming people on the internet for being antisocial. How novel! What's next, accusations of virginity?

Sometimes people are just in the perfect mood for debate, even in a thread where debate is not the topic.

I'm not Ribann, nor do I know his exact intentions for posting this, but I'll take a stab and guess that he posted it merely to say "Hey guys, look at this insane set of bad luck I just had! Funny, huh? Oh well, back to the game..."

I think some people are taking this info and instead of saying "yeah that sucks, we've all been there at one time or another" they take it in a different direction.

Sometimes an intense direction.

That turns insulting.

And off-topic.

Dude, don't you know this crap isn't real? What is real is getting to know people and bettering yourself in life. If you don't possess the skills to set up Skype, play some quality X-wing with someone, and just relax, you can't do anything in life.

You're so caught up in being a personality on these forums that you don't know that REAL PEOPLE sit behind these computers to type these words. I Skype with people all the time on Vassal when we play.

You know what happens? I get to know them!

We laugh and joke and have amazing games. I don't know what your problem is. You've always had a problem with me and now I'm trying to correct the problem and you don't want to correct it.

Thanks for the invitation, but when I want to play a miniatures game, I'll do it the way it was intended: on a table, in person. What strikes me as most humorous is the fact that you think engaging you online would somehow be more sociable than going to play the game at my LGS, which I do several times a week. But hey, it's not like you don't know me, right?

... and stay forever alone.

Yup, totally not a troll. It's good to see you rewarding the faith of other posters who actually thought you were serious for a heartbeat, especially with that jab at Vorpal.

I guess "I'll say this and I'll stop" means something completely different in... well, whatever language Murlocs speak. Murgle gurgle right back at yah, Ribann. Cheers!

Plausable, if this wasn't the very topic of discussion between Ribann and others in another thread. A thread that ended with him calling everybody fat losers (not an exact quote the actual quote was a bit more theatrical). So for him to start a thread titled the way this one is, it doesn't take much to see he's poking the same topic again. I mean if those were really his intentions then what's up with the thread title? You see how he responds to people in this thread.

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/112023-the-meta-is-bigger-than-you/page-5

But he's doing what he does in every thread he posts in. Taking an half cocked position, insulting people who disagree with it, resorting to trolling when he realizes he can't defend his position or his insults. Then wondering why people consider him a troll.

Nope, I blocked you after the last time you tried to troll me in private. You remember, don't you? It was after I promised to get that other troll thread deleted and succeeded. Oh, I'm sorry. Did you not want people to know that your offer of friendship was completely disingenuous?

Hey Wonder do you want to Skype? I'm just so tired of being alone...

On a serious note, X-Wing does use dice which brings in a random factor. However the more skilled you are, the less reliant your game will be on your dice rolls.

False. You will ALWAYS be reliant on your dice rolls.

Say your opponent is flying 3 TIEs and 3 Bombers. that's a total of 27 Hull points you need to chew through to guarantee victory.

That's a minimum of 27 dice you need to roll to guarantee victory.

Sometimes those 27 dice will be enough (as in the OP's unfortunate experience). Sometimes you may need to roll 54. Sometimes you may need to roll 108. And that's ignoring the fact that your opponent will be rolling dice themselves to counter..

Now, you can bleat on about "being less reliant on dice rolls" all you want, but unless you actually have some method of delivering damage which doesn't actually USE dice (and/or let your opponent use them in return), you're talking rubbish.

Only if we can knock back a few beers and laugh at Ribann together.

I guess it's a good thing he said "less reliant" then.

How about more insulated from poor dice rolls? Or is that also going to cause you to go flame on?

I'm straightedge, I don't drink. I mean I hate fun, same thing.

I'd wreck you in X-wing

But how can you assert that if you don't hold play skill as paramount to success in X-wing?! This must mean..

I finally got through to you!

You cowards that won't log into Skype are pathetic. I'd wreck you in X-wing and really, you should just go cry in your pillow. Keep talking your trash. My invitation is always open and you won't take it because you are cowards.

G'night.

Now you just sound like the kids who rage on Xbox Live, which would almost be sad if it wasn't so **** hilarious. You're what, five responses past the point that you were allegedly done posting? Please, save yourself some face and go to bed already.

True story.

Opponent rolled 15 green dice for all evades. No one complains when that happens.

Well except the other guy...

Ribann is that guy who uses one man army in MW2.

Dice can turn the game upside down. Playing well only insulates you from dice.

I expect my opponent to roll 2 for 2 evades every time, with no focus. I expect to hit 1 of 3 times without focus or 2 times with. Anytime I get the upside of variance I win. When I get the down turn I have to play well.

Well, the X-Wing dice don't form a Gaussian distribution, so that's why many people can get burned in this fashion. If they were, then rolling that many blanks together would be nigh improbable, but it's much more likely with dice that form a normal distribution.

I can empathize though. I roll so poorly, some people refuse to play co-op games with me if dice are involved. I've come to believe that over the course of my lifetime, I am rolling on the half that rolls poorly. If I give it another 10-20 years, I will be rolling like a boss.

Don't feel so bad. 123 times in a row and I still can't flip tails...

Dice are almost enough to make me want to fly rebels... :)
