Battlefoam Spartan Bag?

By jkokura, in X-Wing

Anyone have any thoughts on using the Spartan Bag for storing their X-Wing?

I'm looking at getting a good setup for storing my fleet, and I'm not sure what the best option is. I'm really liking the options for custom trays, but I'm not sure about it. Because I'm in Canada, I don't want to try it out just to be unhappy, because shipping alone is a couple Plano boxes.

I don't like the Plano style options, but it's a lot of money to fork out for storage and carrying. So, please don't just write back "forget it, use XYZ Plano option. I know about the various options available, I'm looking specifically for Battlefoam experiences.

So does anyone have any positive experiences? Negative experiences? Either with the Spartan bag, or another setup?

Jacob

Anyone?

I personally don't know about the spartan bag but using the warmachine bag trays (15x8)? I managed to fit 1 yt, 3 E Wing, 3 B Wing, 3 Y Wing, 6 A wing, 8 X Wing or Z95 and 1 HWK 280 In the first tray. 8 Tie Fighters, 6 Tie Intercepters, 3 Phantoms, 3 Defenders, 1 Lambda, 1 Fires pray and 3 Tie bomber with 1 advanced. A third tray 4 inches deep will fit all those dials bases cards etc using 5 2" circles, 2 2.5x3.5 rectangles, 2 2x2.5 rectangles, 5 1.5x1.5 and a 1x4 rectangle for extras and there is still room for something else.

The one thing I like about battle foam is creating your own tray. If I were you I'd play with the tray creator and see if everything you want can fit in the bags dimensions....

Just my long two cents worth. ;)

Don't have the battlefoam myself but I do have two kits that I carry. I have my collection set up in two kits so I can take a mobile tourney kit and then the whole collection. For a tourney play the less stuff you have to carry around with you the better, but you must make sure you have all the items that you need to play. I use the plano cases for the mobile and a two side for the whole other than the epic ships which have their own case as they aren't coming out to play as much as the other items.

I have used custom cut foam before but you are stuck with the cuts, so if you change items or add items this means new foam. They are great products but a little excessive in price unless you get them on sale or have a LFGS order em and they eat the shipping costs.

Battle foam is a little inflexible too for a game like xwing were new models come out and adds more logistics into storing it etc. It takes some serious thought in planning your trays and your case.

While it may take appropriate planning, calling Battlefoam inflexible I think is wrong.

I own Pack 216, a Pack Plus, and now a Pack 720. Inside are about 20" of custom foam happiness :P . I like my things well protected, and these work very, very well.

Generally, I purchase whatever stuff I want from any existing waves (I have a S**t-load of stuff :D), and then plan out how I want all of the foam, order it and any appropriate bags (if necessary), and in about a month ... WHOOO HOOO !!!

Then, as more waves come out, I collect more ships until I have filled another bag, and order some more.

So yes, planning does help, but that is all part of the fun of collecting stuff.

Then how would you describe it? Out of curiosity.

The inflexibility is part of the issue I'm seeing as well. Once you he a tray made up, that's the tray you have and use. If you want more, or have too many ships, you're not using that carrying system to carry everything. You can't just reorganize the foam and move on. It's the future waves that I'm unsure about, because who knows what te ship shapes will be.

I don't see anything better though.

And if you bought a bigger pack than you need you have to do something with the extra room or the case isn't as durable. IMO

had a shield bag and it pretty much carried EVERYTHING that would make a 100 point squad. finally out grew it at wave 4 so i went with the 4th of July special they had going on and went with a 720 although i could have just got another shield bag..you can triple stack and double stack many of the ships in the battle foam bags so yes they can expand as your fleet does or you just get another bag... i mean its the same problems ALL storage systems would have as far as out growing it when new waves come out.. however with battle foam you can always just order the foam for you bag separately (Extra sheets) and only load it with what you will be using.

I sorta thought about getting one layer as my main layer with everything I have now, and then using the above layers to fill in. Maybe I could get Pick and Pluck layers?

Jacob

Pick and pluck works too. Can be a little awkward for round ships but take your time plucking and it will turn out.

I ordered some from the July sale as well. I received it on Friday and immediately asked to return it. The holes are way too tight on the one I got for the X-wing. The guns get stuck in the foam and you have to be super careful to not bend or break them. I haven't returned it yet so if anyone has any tips for the X-wing slots I'd love to hear it. Everything else was great except the X-wing and B-Wing slots.

Trim it out with an exacto knife?

I found the same thing, but did what Dagger Squadron suggested ... just a little bit of careful trimming with a very sharp exacto knife solved the issue.

I ordered their X-wing bag during the 4th of July sale. They do take a while to deliver, especially when "preparing for GenCon". The standard loadout is strange, it only has room for 7 TIEs (I have 8), but there are spaces for 8 TIE Phantoms! However I love the quality of their bags and the custom trays you can order (I have 2 warmachine bags and a Spartan bag). Once I get my bag, I am going to replace Tray 3 in the standard loadout with a custom tray and then the one bag will hold all of my stuff. When new ships are released I will probably order a tray to hold that stuff as well.

I think the Spartan bag will be what I get. I'm pretty happy with the custom trays I've designed, and I left my self the ability to switch out two of the trays later on. I made two trays tht hold cards and bases and stuff like that. This can easily be replaced with ship try's for wave 5+6+... A second spartan bag in the future may mean those trays are never useless.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen. I'm glad to hear few have had bad experiences.

I would get the 720. You can hold everything in it. I customized my trays after wave 3's molds were available. You need pluck or to do a mass update yearly for the new releases. I am going to do some more custom foam after wave 5 since I will have a full tray worth of new models for it at that point. Also with epic I may need to add another falcon and firespray slot.

720 can also handle the CR90 and and rebel transport. The custom tray creator is incredible. It takes some careful thought and planning, but its worth it IMO.

I agree. You can buy the 720 with a custom load and just get the trays now that you need and get the rest later. They keep track for you how much of the 12" of foam space you use so you can save some for later.

2 Spartan bags are 11" of foam and still cheaper than a 720 with custom loadout. I'm not as interested in a barge bag like that because I doubt I'll be able to fill it anytime soon, or maybe ever. If i eer do get up to even close, a second Spartan bag would do me fine.

I think I'll try posting images of my foam designs and see what kind of feedback they gather.
