3-Year Anniversary of X-Wing's Announcement

By Mikael Hasselstein, in X-Wing

So, according to the Wikia, it's been three years since X-Wing was first announced (or, it will be tomorrow, (8/2/2011), and we're a month and a half from it's 2-year release date (9/14/2012).

So, I'm a total n00b compared to so many of you. I barely got here before the Wave 4 release, though I've been playing (and posting) fairly aggressively since I started. (What else would I do? Work? Have a family life??)

Does anyone have any memories to share from that very first beginning?

Looking back on how the game has developed, what have been some of your biggest surprises?

We have a lot of speculation threads currently going on about Imperial Huge ships, or what's coming out at GenCon, or the addition of a third faction and (of course) Star Destroyers!! Surely, some of the early predictions have been vindicated, while many have (thus far) not been fulfilled. Care to share?

I've skimmed back a few times to some of the oldest threads on the forum here, apparently before the game was even released. They're a fun read.

I sence some necro'ing about to occur.

Anybody make strong predictions or nay-saying that turned out to be wrong?

I don't post a lot but I've been playing since wave 1.

The thing I remember most from the early days is the stock shortages. Luckily, I bought in right before they happened. The bgg board was loaded with threads of people either trying to get the game or a particular ship (which was nearly all of them). Ugh, and the eBay prices were insane.

I'm glad that ffg has that relatively ironed out now.

I never had any problems with Wave 1, or any release for that matter. Having a FLGS that I could trust to order enough (and actually get enough to handle their pre-orders) was a great thing in those early days of the game.

I came across an old thread once that had someone saying we would never see a TIE Bomber.

I demo'ed the game the year before release at GenCon when all they had to demo with was prototypes. They were very nervous about letting people play with the models for fear of breaking. After playing the demo, i didn't care for the game at all!

Fast Forward to a year later, and it was everywhere that year at GenCon. I come home, and play with my friend at his kitchen table, and it wasn't the same game i demo'ed the previous year.

Been hooked ever since.

Bahaha, seriously? Golden!

I learned about the game slightly before Christmas 2013. It has been good fun collecting from then to now.

interesting. Do you remember what changed between the demo and final game?

So do you celebrate when a game was announced or do you celebrate it's release date?

A number of early posters swore that the game would fail if you couldn't swap pilots between ships.

X-Wing and the Star Wars LCG were announced around the same time. I was really psyched for the LCG due to early previews saying it would be playable solo. For a long time I had no intention of picking up X-Wing.

Then the first version of the LCG was scrapped, and X-Wing with it's sweet sweet mini's were hitting the market...Fast forward and my X-Wing collection is growing unwieldy while I have yet to even play the card game.
