Huge Ships at GenCon?!?

By godofcheese, in X-Wing

The following appears in the lates epic tournament rules document:

Note: Any new product released at Gen Con 2014 will not be legal for the
2014 North American Championship or Escalation tournament

It is under the heading "Legal Products" on the last page. There is no corresponding sentence in the Standard Tournament rules.

Just saying....

This likely refers to rebel aces. They will probably announce a huge ship or two slated for release next spring though, like they did with the previous ones.

Something may be announced at GenCon, but I really doubt it will be released there.

The quote you've attached most likely refers to the Rebel Aces expansion.

If it applies to Rebel Ces, hy include it in the epic play rules, but not the normal rules?

I think we could see some decimators and outriders. Last year they had every ship that was announced or released including wave one which had been sold out for months. I bought some B-wings and Bombers last year at Gen-con and it was a few months before thy hit retail in my area. Same with The Lord of the Rings LCG. They had stuff available that I missed getting and it wasn't on store shelves until probably 4-5 months later. Gen-con is a big deal to FGG it seems and they really get the good out to those who attend. I am glad I am only an hour from Gen-con. Hooray!!!

Rebel Aces aren't going to just be "released at GenCon" though. They are already on the boat and will probably be on Store Shelves very near GenCon time frame.

It's the new Wave 6 Gungan Faction Jar Jar Binks TIE Advanced that comes as an escort for the Star Destroyer released right before Gungan Aces II - with Bombers and Y-Wings, moving bombs, and EPT Y-Wing pilots. which are all printed stateside and in Europe simultaneously, so no more boat waiting times.

Sorry Crabbok, Wave 6 is pod racing. There are 3 single boosters and an "Aces" booster that includes Sebulba and Annie.

This. Everyone is saying "rebel aces", and while they very well may sell them at Gencon, I think we will see imperial huge ships, and those included upgrade cards are what the epic rules are specifically banning.

With no preview at all, no run-up, no early marketing to drive anticipation and sales? Even though they've done that for every other product since the game's inception, including the Epic Rebel ships?

For safety's sake if nothing else, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I am all for the Gungan Aces II set, I finally get to fly the best Star Wars character EVER! Jar Jar!

Yeah, there is now way they have anything they haven't announced yet ready. The reason we get the early announcements is because that is when pre-orders go out to retailers. So, we would've heard about any new product that would be ready for such a release.

....so, to reiterate: previews or sneak peaks, maybe. Releases, no.

So they're releasing a limited edition, for GenCon attendees only, a fully to-scale Super Star Destroyer to the first 100 people to the FFG booth? Awesome. Everyone else gets a mandatory Jar Jar Binks crew card that you MUST use every time you play.

I read it on the internet so it must be true...

It does appear in the standard tournament rules, on page 4 under "Legal Products". Perhaps you were looking at an older copy that your browser cached?

Oh I'm not gonna hold my breath, I just think that the placement of the rule is interesting. If it's just rebel aces, why put it in the Epic rule set? And if it's just Epic, why does it specifically ban it for the North American Championships? That to me points to an Epic release with upgrades available for standard play, just like every other Epic ship so far. Now while I completely agree that zero hype or run-up is definitely uncharacteristic of FFG, I would also say that they love GenCon and that anything is possible. Now I think - and to be perfectly clear this is just WHAT I THINK - that people that know a lot more about what coming in this game than I do have been bubbling about something for a while now, and that something will be at GenCon. I think we're gonna see something a bit more than rebel aces and a reveal.

I'm looking at version 2.11 updated 7/16/2014. I do not see it in the standard rule set.

In the Epic rule set, also released today, it specifically mentions releases at GenCon 2014. Hence the discussion.

I think we will see imperial huge ships, and those included upgrade cards are what the epic rules are specifically banning.

The only upgrade card currently banned in Epic rules is Navigator.

There's no possible way we'll see Epic Imperial ships at Gencon, other then prototypes like they did last year. I for one really hope they do just so we know what they're going to make. But there's no way they'll have them for sale there. Vorpal Sword pointed out all the reasons why that won't happen.

Wave 5 is still at the printer, so there's pretty much no way those will be at Gencon either, other then again as display pieces to show them off.

I expect them to have Rebel Aces there, but they won't be 'legal' because they won't be released yet. I don't remember exactly when they were put as On the Boat, but I remember looking at the calendar and it would be most likely early Sept before they're released.

You guys!

Crabbie forgot to mention the all new girl power squad to get more wives to play; Padme Ponderers!

I hear you. Now please look at the rules for Epic tournament play. Please reference the new (red) print on page 5 which states:

Note:
Any new product released at Gen Con 2014 will not be legal for the

2014 North American Championship or Escalation tournament

Please also note that this new ruling is not present in the standard tournament rules. Why would that be? I don't have any inside info or anything, but I stand by what I said. However, I have totally been wrong before.

I think everyone is reading into this too much. A simple explanation would be simple human error in forgetting to copy/paste the disclaimer into the core Tournament rules.

This FAQ update have seen a wealth of little mistakes in getting them posted, from not uploading the actual files to the server, missing phrases to complete sentences, and the like.

Wave 5 has been at the printers for a while. So it is possible they will have flown over some for a Gencon release. Not likely, with Rebel Aces, but it is possible. You just have to look at how early the Netrunner release ended up being.

I think you are right, but parsing language is fun!

"Why isn't it in the standard rules" is a good question, but I think an error is a way more likely reason than a cold release. Since neither the North American Tournament nor the Escalation tournament allow Epic play (afaik), there's actually no reason for the disclaimer to appear in the Epic rules at all--unless it was supposed to appear in both of the updated rules documents as a blanket statement, and accidentally got left out of the standard tourney rules.

That is, a disclaimer in the Epic rules prevents new releases (standard or Epic) from being used in Epic tournaments, but the lack of a disclaimer in the standard tournament rules means any new content (standard or Epic) could be interpreted as legal for play. While that's weird, again I think it points to error rather than hush-hush release.

Unless there are standard upgrade cards in the Epic release...

Like maybe upgrades to the TIE/Adv? :)
