High power character builds?

By BETTAMAN8, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Machine 5 requires a bit of GM fiat, if I recall correctly, and I would assume the average GM would not allow the shields to stack for Body armour, so we may be stuck with a piddly 30 armour. Or 42 with psychic powers. :(

Dual-wielding suppression shields is what I'm doing for my current tech-priest, however. We're using OW combat rules, and no swift, lightning or dual wield means my only recourse is Feint and Standard Attacks with as much strength behind them as possible.

Though I might stick to mechadendrite-shields on formal occasions. ;P

When I ment psybernetics I ment Aetheric Wave Spars from HA.

I dont know how you read those adamantium hilt, but for me they grant +2 AP to arm only. So +6 AP to arms, and +4 to body. Also - bonuses from the same source do not stack, so no 16 AP. Also the description says they are only added to swords.

Neat.

One power sword in each hand for +2 AP, one buckler on each arm for +2 AP, and a Suppression Shield on a mechadendrite for +4 to the body, and you've got dual-wielding and shields all in one package.

Now, if only explorators could dual-wield melee weapons at all. Buncha cockteases, those FFG people. Give us the best S/T stats in the game, and ****** away our combat talents.

Edit: wow, that was not a word I thought they'd censor. How are we supposed to discuss that kickass Guy Ritchie movie?

My bad as to AP from adamantium hilt, it's 2 AP indeed. Rest is somewhere between RAW, RAI and OP. I also get those HA psimplants now.

Almost all of this doesn't require GM fiat but a heavily drunken GM. Also we were taking into account being a bit heretek aren't we ;) ? And hey: 30 AP is good enough.

You people are terrifying and make me sad. I had made my RT have AP of 16 with toughness 6 and thought it was really good and was happy. But 39 AP plus whatever is that person's toughness on top of that means you need something special to just tickle that person. So as a playable character it should never be allowed. But as the thought experiment it was cool to see.

After the incident with Paladin and Shadowrun 4th Edition, I stay wary about high-armour builds. If I wouldn't turn you down by kneejerk reflex alone, the alcohol you'd need to convince me would also render me unable to speak, so it's a moot point anyhow.

If you could motivate it in-character and roleplay it and actually work for it, it might be another matter.

Also, Magellan, how in the name of Omnissiah do you manage to get 16 TB for your 16 mechadendrites?

Motivate having high armour as a tech-priest? Yeah, that'll be hard. ;P

Machinator Array lets you have 2x your TB in mechadendrites.

But with Mining Helot, Machinator Array, the Genetor's Brute mutation, Penal World, Warrior and Dark Secret, I have accomplished 110 Toughness in the past. I don't think you can get much higher.

Oh yeah, true. Didn't think of that one.

But as for armour, it's OK to make a tough Explorator, but it's really inconsiderate to your co-players to make a ridiculously tough character. Why? Because for the GM to challenge you, you'd have to face nastier and nastier foes, and if you're the only power gamer, everybody else'll die.

But it is indeed interesting as a thought exercise.

Indeed. I have pretty extensive house rules to keep everyone on the same level while keeping a wide variety of builds valid. This is a real problem with this system, and one that often baffles GMs.

My only problem is that none of the players ever try to push the limits, so all my countermeasures are theoretical.

You know that this character is pretty weak, compared to Psyker from Black Crusade, that kills Great Unclean One or two guo's (270 wounds) in one round with force storm.

Or combo of Staff of Change with Precision Telekinesis, and Blade of Baleful Might to deal something like 1d10+30, felling (10), warp, proven (10) with lightning attack.

Yes, Black Crusade blows the other systems out of the water, especially the tomes. There's a thread over on the black crusade forum where they boosted a sorcerer up over 100 psy rating.

Or you can just buy Mechanicus Assimilation 100.000.000 times and be truly indestructible.

You could make void master OP at piloting, using point buy system.

Homeworld: Footfallen

Birthright: Scavenger

Lure: Crusade - Warrior

Trials: Hand of War

Motivation: Fortune

It's funny how once I pass through this kind of thing, I forget entirely the meaning of the thread and start thinking of what a good story for this character would be.

Like...

Jack Passer

Lived most of his life as a colonist in Footfall and learned from his father (family business) how to pilot an Arvus on the usual contracts he would get (among many others) from seneschals resupplying RT voidships. Whenever bad times would come, he learned how to seek valuable materials jettisoned from voidships as "trash" and resell these in the lower decks of Footfall.

Eventually his father died, Passer sold the Arvus and took on a job in a Dictator-class Rogue Trader owned ship transporting supplies to confidential locations in a contract to the Imperial Navy.

During a hard combat against highly advanced xenos (Tau) utilizing plasma weaponry in an unknown location (Jericho Reach), the surviving flight-deck masters had to start the training of new Fury pilots, Passer volunteering on the prospects of....... blablablabla

That's why, If you have a good story I would allow any build.

highly advanced xenos (Tau)

Void Masters are the action heroes of RT, yet are the least played in any game I've ever seen. They can fight, man the augur arrays, fly the landing craft, steer the ship, fight the ship, repair the ship, and given time, they can design and build the ship. In many ways they make better Lord Captains than the Lord Captain.

But if all you want is a whiz bang with chain fingernails, play an Explorator. I'd hope your GM blasts the character from orbit. I would.

Characters can't really be OP in this game. They can be obnoxious, but not OP. Well, I suppose if you are playing endless dungeon crawls...but then why play RT at all? Play Deatwatch.

I normally try not to validate such obvious flame bait, but I have to correct you. Void-masters are not good at combat, and their special class ability is completely useless unless you fail your skill checks in the first place. Given that their areas of expertise generally involve checks that gain maneuverability or detection bonuses in the first place, and can often be boosted with an MIU and/or a Logis Implant on top of that, failure doesn't seem very likely.

I'm not going to speculate on what your definition of "OP" might be - it's an entirely subjective concept, and you're entitled to your opinion. Going around spouting this kind of acerbic condescension, though, is unproductive and only contributes to a lower level of public dialogue. Please exercise some restraint in your critique. This isn't 4chan.

Voidmasters are awesome at combat. They can have as high a BS as anyone, and relatively cheaply. When I say combat, I'm not thinking of space opera with glowing swords. I'm picturing ships trading salvos that melt silly little sword-wielding lunatics.

I exercised restraint. You should've heard the ridicule in my thoughts. Re-read your post to a mirror and watch for the hypocrisy.

Then exercise more of it.
