Slow slow SLOW!

By Trump281, in Support

The site is EVEN SLOWER today.

Average response times for me are up to 40+ seconds and at least 50% of the responses time out at the moment.

Can we PLEASE have this sorted asap?

I hate to pile on (but I'm going to anyway. gran_risa.gif ) After jumping over to the old forums to look up something and getting very fast load times and then coming back to the new forums really showed how slow the new forums are. I willing to give the FFG team some time to tune the system and hopefully bring the speed up, but right now it is very painful browsing the forums.

It's not going to get much faster. You have from 1-6 images per poster in here, it's rife with tables and javascript neither are known for their speedy rendering in browsers. *** editor is a mini-wordprocessor, and so will ALWAYS take a bit to load.

Ultimately things will only get slower, not faster, as more people start using the site, more people add more games to their profile, and more different avatars are added. One nice thing about having avatars hosted on different sites is that while it may take a bit longer for the avatars to all load, they're all loading from other websites, so the FFG servers aren't having to serve as much information up.

Enjoy these days of speed, because this is probably the fastest these new forums will ever be without serious redesign of the code.

I sure hope FFG isn't paying Edge Studio's much for this new forum software. It's clunky, hard to use, and not intuitive at all. It's definitely a major step backwards, in both speed and usefulness, than the old forums were.

I can understand the desire to "integrate" the entire site together. But this attempt has FAIL written all over it. I might feel different if I could see any progress (or heck, having clear and easy-to-find communication from the FFG staff), but as much as I'm sure things are being done to attempt to correct this, I keep feeling like our requests are falling on deaf ears.

Well, for a day or two it seemed to be getting better, but now it's slowed down again. Hate to whine, and I like the overall look and feel of the website--with one or two exceptions--but the speed is a huge drawback.

Or maybe it's just me that's slowing down..... sad.gif

No its not you.

Today the site has been SLOOOWWWW.....

Mind-meltingly so. and is Aslum is right and this is the best its going to be, thats a HUGE problem. Ditch the pretty pictures - i'd much rather had a forum that works properly.

Coupled with the fact that after every post i still get kicked out the to the front page, so i have to click back in adding a further 30-60 seconds to each post this is just ridiculous.

I know its whining, and we should be grateful that the site is free at least, but seriously...this slow load issue is really, really poor .

Actually mine is loading quickly ..though that's not saying much I guess.

Sorry to have to jump on the bandwagon, but these boards are really painfully slow.

For me, they have increased by at least an order of magnitude after the hardware upgrade.

Which means they are now only somewhat slow.

Wow! OK.

I just had 2-3 clicks there where response times were 2-3 seconds. gran_risa.gif

Then i clicked here to mention it and this thread timed out.

Then it took me 30-40 second per click to start again and navigate here... enfadado.gif

The light at the end of the tunnel, this time at least, was an oncoming train...

The speed is still an issue, but I have had bouts of relative speed today. After replying to a post bouncing back to the forum front page is a mistake. That needs to be fixed. I have run forums and forum software for years and this is just unacceptable for me. I applaud FFG for trying to improve their site and give the community a new and improved place to hang out, but these things need to be fixed. I understand the code and forum software are to blame in most instances, but hopefully something can be done.

I have no problems with the colors and the layout. The adds and storefront feel are part of business and I will not complain about them. I thank you FFG for doing this for us, but more needs to be done to make this what you envisioned.

Well, it getting there. It's not taking minutes to load anymore.

OK, like Deth3327 i'm seeing some improvement today at least.

Yesterday was dreadful, with timeouts practically every click, but today the response times are now 15-30 seconds rather than 30-60 seconds, and i've only had a single timeout so far.

That's still some way of 1-3 seconds response time which is what i'd suggest is the minimum acceptable standard, but 100% improvement on yeasterday so far today so... gran_risa.gif

For the love of Pete...

I used to hit these forums more than once a day. Now it's twice a week at best. I have to open multiple tabs to get through it all before I age another year. I am a bit amused that this is happening to FFG though. A game company known for putting out games that end up having to be fixed later has now set up a forum that will have to be fixed later.

The pages load slightly faster if you turn don't allow FFG to run any of the scripts (Thanks Firefox+NoScript), but then of course you can't reply or click about half of the links.

Those of you reporting things are going faster.... how much faster exactly? 45 seconds instead of a minute IS faster, but not appreciably. I'm still getting 30+ seconds per page, even with scripting turned off, and then of course if I ever do want to reply or something, I have to reload the page with scripting enable, so I'm not sure I'm really saving much time, as pages generally take me about a minute to load.

I'm Using Firefox 3.0.3

What browser are you using? That might be relevent information as well.

I am on Firefox 3.0.4 and am pretty much always under 10 seconds. (Typically around 5.)

I'm going to use this thread to suggest that the speed issue is addressed as fast as possible (ha, ha). The fact that I can check and reply to four other fora before even getting through a few threads here is somewhat telling. It doesn't matter whether I use the thrice-damned Internet Explorer, FireFox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, Konquerer, Nautilus or whatever, they're all like being on sub-dialup speeds.

A "community" that prevents discussion because people get annoyed having to wait for it is probably not the best of things, even though the "community" that is being created – despite some of the conceptual glitches with friends, product pushing, etc. – is a good one, and kudos for it, but aren't we getting into "for the whom the bell tolls" kind of situation here?

Faster forums, guys 'n' gals, if you would.

Edit: I've found a fast function on the forum. The only problem is that it is the "Back" button on my browser. llorando.gif

OK...progress seems to be being made, today at least.

I'm down to a fairly consistent 10-15 seconds response time.

Getting there chaps! gui%C3%B1o.gif

Still WAY off and acceptable 1-3 seconds though... preocupado.gif

Publish seems to be working faster and, overall, the forums do seem to have picked up a bit. Definitely still too slow to be comfortable given the other absences in the "community" site.

MADDENING! MADDENING!! MADDENING!!! enfadado.gif enfadado.gif

Seriously guys, you've got to get this fixed.

Its taking 40-60 second per click and the moment.

Coupled with the insane fact that you get shunted out to the front page after you post, its just unacceptable.

It takes me about 5 minutes to process each post at the moment.

GOOD GRIEF!

It really would help if the web guys 'n' gals from FFG would begin to make responses about what they are (or are not) doing to fix the situation. I'm sure that the participants in this community would appreciate that.

I'm about to the point of not even coming to FFG's site. The old site was easy to navigate. The colors didn't make my eyes bleed trying to read the screen. And the site actually loaded quickly.

The site now is difficult to get around, ugly ugly ugly (except the front page), and loads slower than the dial-up speeds I had back when I had AOL in its infancy. Yuck.

Ooooh! Shiney!! gran_risa.gif

OK, my response times are now down to 5-7 seconds it would seem. A VAST improvement. Well done chaps. aplauso.gif

Now if you can just fix it so that i don't get shunted to the front page after every post, and so that i can edit my past posts, we might have something resembling a usable forum here! gui%C3%B1o.gif

Thumbs up so far though...

Now we're cooking with gas. Whatever you did it seems to be working great. Thanks!

As I've not exactly been a quiet grumbler (but rather a vocal complainer), I think it's only fair to give kudos where kudos are due. Assuming whatever changes that were made "stick", I've noticed a SIGNIFICANT increase in speed since the site's been back up this evening.

Speed makes the site much more usable. Still a ways to go to make it as good as it used to be on the old forums, but making it fast at least makes it possible to at least read the site.
