XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread
Gunboat or bust
Still ugly....and now a picture of it defaces the sanctity of the Gunboat thread.
At least you posted a picture of a 3d printed MkI Assault frigate to go with it.
Yeah so peeps could see how much more badass The MK1 is in comparison.
![]()
Not to derail the GUNBOAT thread, but I ordered a Mk1 from here for Armada if anyone else is interested.
I got a bunch of stuff on my wishlist already... but added this too. Good looking out!

Now back to GUN-*****!

If you equip a Tractor Beam you may also equip a second cannon upgrade at normal cost.
Add System slot to upgrade bar.
After attacking, If a ship you targeted during the attack was given a TB token, perform another attack against that target.

It still bothers me that most renditions of the ship show six 'missile ports' on each side engine module when it's well know the ship's standard armament is 16 Concussion Missiles. This is of course a problem since the earliest images of the ship. What about the 'missing' missile tubes? Are they 'behind' the ones we see, or inbewteen them? Is every GUNBOAT ever depicted instead show a complement of Proton Torpedoes, which were carried in salvos of a dozen.
The latest renditions seem to also change the wing mounted Laser Cannons different from earlier sources, originally portrayed very much like the wing mounted double cannons on the Lambda. They are now longer, don't have the swivel mechanism, and generally look more badass.

I would start saying that game mechanics don't need to match the fluff, not even in the PC games those stats are based on.
However, you could argue that an X-Wing has only two torpedo ports, and still it could equip 6 torpedos for its standard load (12 with the full load).
What two torpedo ports do is to allow the X-Wing to launch two torpedoes at the same time, right?
Well, you could say that the Gunboat can equip it's standard load of 16 missiles, even when it shows only 12 missile ports. It technically allows it to launch 12 missiles at the same time (Cluster Missiles? Assault Missiles?) without modifications, while the same would be much more complicated for an A-Wing or a TIE Defender (regardless of what the art for Maarek Stele in his TIE Defender is showing).
If the gunboat were to perform torpedo runs against a big target, it could release a stronger hit in one single pass, while other strike craft would need several runs.
About the cannons. I think initially they were chin mounted, like in the Y-Wing. Later on they were depicted mounted on the wings. I guess it's different variations of the same ship in the same way that thare are BTL-S3 and -A4 Y-Wing, TIE/X7 and TIE/D Defenders, etc.

Which sounds absolutely brutal.
Looks brutal, too:

Those side pods are so long you can load your extra munitions behind the ones in the launch tubes.

No. I'm not taking that away from my Bombers.

I would also be OK with a GUNBOAT only missile upgrade that gives torpedo slots. Don't want every Imperial missile carrier to suddenly start shooting Torps, now do we.
Yeah, X-wings and Y-wings only have two torpedo tubes, but carry many more than just two torpedoes internally. That's because they are TORPEDOES. Missiles tend to be carried in a way that most, if not all, can be fired easily in a salvo. Look at the A-wing, those long slit-like holes on either side of the fuselage carry 6 missiles each! We even see them fire salvos of missiles in ROTJ, much faster than normal torpedo carrying fighters can unload their warheads.

This GUNBOAT is obviously firing Torpedoes. Hence I'm Ok with it only carrying 12.

Perhaps, but there is nowhere a comparison of how fast missiles and torpedoes can be launched compared with the opposite.
The A-Wings in ROTJ are seen launching missiles in rapid succession. So fast that they were mistaken by laser bolts by most people.
Also, Maarek here is either releasing a big salvo of missiles, or it is a new, confetti-based weapon.

However, Poe Dameron is seen also launching double torpedoes really fast in TFA. And definitely more than 6 of them.
As usual, Star Wars is really inconsistent with anything that is not directly on the main storyline (and many times, even that too).
What we know is that
- Ships can carry more warheads than the amount of launcher ports they have. Probably they have a reloading mechanism that reloads the empty laucher ports with new warheads.
- They can simultaneously release warheads in different ports at the same time, as seen in all the movies and in the PC games.
- Sometimes they can reload the launcher ports fast enough to allow for a fast barrage of warheads, as seen in ROTJ, TFA, in the Maarek Steel Defender art.

I tried counting how many he shot, the new (I belive cannon) cross section book listes T-70's having a magizine of 8 torps with 4 per launcher, but Poe shoots like 18-20 between the opening run and his trench run inside strike.

Like I said before, Poe Dameron's Black One X-wing has a fuselage full of nothing but torpedoes, machismo and rainbows. Maybe some ponies too.
(His T-70 may have been specially modified to carry more than double the standard load, or the technical manuals got it wrong and the T-70 carries at least 20 warheads per the movie)

Or JJ Abrams doesn't give a dam about how things work or are supposed to work. Remember that scene wilth all planets in the Hosnian system being visible at the same time that they are hit by the Death Star's Starkiller Base's beam. Or Spock seeing Vulcan being blown up from another planet in the Star Trek movie. Or the teleport thing, or...
The red light from the firing of the Starkiller weapon was visible to everyone in the galaxy at the instant it was fired due to its nature as a Hyper Lightspeed weapon. (Technobabble basically)
The Hosnian system having 5 ha potable planets that were all within a few million miles from each other at the time of their destruction is another matter.....

GUNBOATS IN ROGUE ONE
at least I can hope. I really doubt it though.
I got an itch, and the only thing that will help is more cow bell, I mean, GUNBOAT.
GUNBOAT, accept no substitute.
And no SLAMing. That's the other boat. No, the other other boat.
Those LEGO Star Wars fans are almost as obsessive as we are over here on the FFG forums.
So, most people here will probably already have seen this sexy looking beast:

And you've probably spotted this dinky little fella as well:

But how about this one?

And this dude?

And another one...

And this one

And this beast

Boy! My son would love to get one of these!!! Very cool
.
I need to update my attempt at Lego GUNBOAT and post the results.
When ever I get some free time. That's not taken up with X-wing
