XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

I woke up this morning and thought man I really didn't need that second glass of crown royal.

I'm also struggling with myself having to admit that maybe it's time just to get a Mels/Gosric.

I really don't want to though, as I still see that as admitting defeat.

I woke up this morning... smiled at the rising sun. Three little birds pitch by my doorstep...

I woke up THIS morning and decided to work-up some ship stats.

Attack3 Agility3 Hull3 Shield4
Actions: Focus, Target Lock
Upgrades: Missile x3, Cannon

Lots of theorycrafting done over the course of this thread on that subject, based mainly on the Wookiee info and experiences playing the X-Wing PC games.

The common community consensus would be Attack 2, Agility 1 (or 2 - there's arguments for either), Hull 4, Shields 3. Actions and Upgrades look about right. So you're not all that far off, except on Agility.

Think a more nimble BTL-A4 Ion Turret Y-Wing with Missiles instead of Torpedoes, and you're not far off.

You can ignore obstacles during movement and when targetting enemy ships.

When you bump ships you do not lose actions.

You may fire a secondary weapon after making a primary weapon attack.

I perfer the Attk 2, Agi 2, Hull 4, Shi 3 version with either barrel roll or focus, and tgt lock. 3 missile and a cannon sounds right.

You're thinking of the Missile Boat.

I think he is being ironical.

Some people here believe we are so much fond of the Gunboat because we want an overpowered ship, when it is actually far from that. The TIE Defender is better than the Gunboat in all possible roles, and then some more. To be lore accurate, the Gunboat should be more or less the poor man's Defender. Start from the Defender, remove attack power, reduce its availability of cannons, reduce its agility, reduce its "speed" on the dial, reduce its cost to match the reductions. There you have it.

Anyway, back on the Missile Boat, it wasn't really that monster of a starfighter if you removed the warheads.

I don't think you could kill anything with its single laser unless it was the lowest tier fighters like the Z-95, and only if you caught them in the tractor beam.

Certainly, it didn't have lots of hull and shields. Two advanced missiles would blow it up 100% of the time. I think a B-Wing or a Gunboat could withstand the same damage without blowing up.

Without warheads, the TIE Defender was superior, by far.

With the Missile Boat, I would go for

1/3/3/2 with Slam, Boost, Focus, Target Lock

It is directly worse than a Starviper, with those stats (even accounting for Autothrusters equipped).

Because it would rarely attack with its primary weapon, it should have some upgrade that allows it to attack with missiles easily and without discarding them.

Then, the player needs to choose whether he wants to equip Autothrusters, Advanced SLAM or Guidance Chips. You cannot have everything, kid.

For fluff reasons, it should be able to equip a tractor beam somehow. And heavy bombs that go to the missile slot rather than to a bomb slot!

I am re-playing tie-fighter at the moment (surprisingly well playable for its age) and i think it should have 2 agi at least.. it is very easy to tail a y/b/x-wing in it, only the a-wing gives it some trouble.

Bad side-effect of replaying tie-fighter, now i want the gunboat added to x-wing even more badly :(

There you have a utility ship that can still deal some damage with the 3 red dice of the cannons, without being overpowered.

If you equip the Assault Gunboat title, it excels at dealing damage with utility cannons. With an Ion Cannon, it would cost 21 points, just like the X-Wing.

Add a system to perform the role of the Astromech and it will go up to 23 points with Fire Control System, 24 with Accuracy Corrector, or 25 with Sensor Jammer.

You would have something with a firepower similar to that of an X-Wing with added utility (the tokens given by the cannons).

If you equip the StarWing title, it excels at attacking with missiles after dealing some token with the utility cannons. This removes the damage from the utility cannons, only dealing tokens. But then it triggers an ordnance attack. Combined with Fire Control System and Guidance Chips, this can be really advantageous, for a cost 18+2+0+ the cost of the missile.

With this title, it also becomes able to equip the Long Range Scanners, instead, that would allow you to change to another System upgrade.

Alex mentioned in that same podcast that Wave 9 contained a hard counter for the 3 jumpmasters.As someone else has mentioned, it could be something as simple as the mag pulse warheads from "TIE Fighter" that are even mentioned by Poe Dameron in TFA, when they steal the TIE/SF. They included the standalone T-70 and TIE/FO in wave 8, right? So I wonder if the TIE/SF comes with those and is included in wave 9.I would very much prefer anything else than another TIE, of course. But I wouldn't really mind much if they released that leaked concept for a new TIE that JJ discarded, and actually looked awesome. PD: If they release the TIE Pacman, I might aswell cry...

I would treat Scum Pac-TIEs as a cross of TIEs and Z-95s minus the missile slot and plus one PS. Stats for TIE, Z-95 dial.

I like Attack2 and Agility2 a lot better because it would cost less in squad points. So then I would add a barrel roll to my speculation.

What kind of dial would the Gunboat have? I don't wanna scrub this thread for the general consensus...

Is Epic play epic enough to handle that thing? It's a beast.

I want to use it so bad. Not quite "lash together six and throw them into wild space" bad, but I the wheels are turning for an "Assault the Dreadnaught" mission or maybe even a "Katana Fleet" campaign. With Gunboats aplenty, of course.
