XG-1 "Star Wing" Assault Gunboat Thread

By FTS Gecko, in X-Wing

So this thread apparently started on June 14th, 2014. . .

Mr Victus106, the hope for the Gunboat has been here for a long, long time...

Well the Gunboat now does have some precedent with FFG, it is in one ofthe Scum and Villainy rpg books. And is mentioned as a Impeiral patrol vessel.

Yep, the Gunboat's appearance (and artwork) in Edge Of The Empire certainly gives us hope...

2011???

Mother of God. . . this sounds like it was put on the slowest FFG boat they could muster! Rest was right though ( E wing, Star Viper, etc).

However, that being said, I don' think the game was in a good place for a Star Wing. Missiles and Torps have only really JUST been made competitive and the U boat is showing that. Now is the time to push that further with the Havoc and Star Wing, then counter it in Wave 10 by releasing specific modifications which grant additional green dice when declared the target of an secondary weapon attack or Target Jammer, when declared the target of a target lock action, roll a dice, on a hit result, the target lock is lost and not applied.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true. .

Yep, the ship has literally been in some people's minds since day zero. From before the game was even released.

Funny thing was that I was lucky enough to play at FFG and run into Alex Davy, (who was absolutely terrific and even lent me a damage card when I realized I was one short right before the tournament), about the time the Phantom was coming out. I sort of jokingly asked why we were getting something from Rebel Assault 2 of all things rather than this ship from X-Wing and Tie Fighter games and he seemed a bit surprised people cared about that ship (and at my being dismissive of Rebel Assault 2). So I guess some of us just had vastly different childhoods. I mean there must be someone out there who grew up only playing Galactic Battlegrounds. Or maybe Masters of Teras Kasi.

Well when they went and called it X-WING a lot of us immediately thought of the venerable flight sims. It's the only "basic" fighter we don't have yet, and notably comparable to the mainstays of the Rebel forces.

I love that dang ship, I took a lot of pride in using Gunboats successfully in TIE Fighter and XvT. People were zipping about in X-Wings and A-Wings and I'd still take them down all the time. Lots of nostalgia factor there.

That would be me, hence the TIE punisher being an awesome announcement on my end.

See, I never played Rebel Assault myself. Or Galaxies, for that matter. But I think Tsiegtiez hits the nail on the head

X-Wing: The Miniatures Game. They must have known what they were doing when they chose that name. I'm pretty sure the game was originally intended to not just catch the Star Wars crowd, but specifically those die-hard fans of the PC originals. It can't be a coincidence.

Look at FFG's catalogue, and you'll see it's not the only beloved PC tie in, either. Far from it (and that's definitely not a criticism, either!)

If they really knew what they were doing, everything from the XvT series would have been the first things in the game.

Maybe. I'd argue they might have thought about the Gunboat way at the start, for Wave I or II, since it's basically a Rebel ship they could give to the Empire. X-Wing and Y-Wing vs TIE/ln and Gunboat would have been pretty balanced at the time, but would have been far less iconic than Vader's TIE/x1.

I would love the chance to ask the original design team, because the vanilla TIE/ad feels a whole lot like a compromise between the Gunboat and the TIE/ln.

Those poor kids who grew up without bringing order to the galaxy.

I would be shocked if they don't have at the very least concept rules and a prototype model for it.

But Wave I, II and III were essentially Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi ships (in that order), with an ambiguous and somewhat lost-looking HWK-290 thrown n for good measure.

The TIE Defender (and maybe Z95) in Wave 4 is straight back to the PC games, though.

Maybe the Gunboat will be the rumoured Wave 9 U-boat hard counter :P

Make it so.

What can beat three agility 2, hull 5,shield 4, PS 3 torpedo carriers with Guidance Chips?

FOUR AGILITY 2, HULL 4, SHIELD 4, PS 3 MISSILE CARRIERS WITH GUIDANCE CHIPS! AHA! AHAHAHA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

They outturreted Fat Han out of the meta with the 4 TLTs, didn't they? I wouldn't be surprised if they'd outtorpedoed the 3 scouts with the gunboat...

My guess for why we don't have it is that they might be trying to make a clear delineation between Empire and Rebels with everything the Empire has, at least in terms of fighters, being some form of Tie, which would make some sense from a purity of design stance, but the addition of the Scum faction kind of undermines that. Don't worry guys, we won't get confused by an Imperial ship that's not got solar panels! Besides, it's made by Cygnus so is in the same design-space as the shuttle!

The thing I really would like for a gunboat is some sort of ion cannon ability. Either you could do a Tie/D style thing, or have it be that when you hit with a primary weapon attack you have a chance to also give out an ion token. Either would capture the flavor of the ship without making it just another 3 attack whatever.

This is a legit worry. And yes, "worry" is the right word in this context. I really hope they're not restricted to that approach because personally speaking after Imperial Veterans hits I simply won't be buying any more TIEs.

What about...?

Fire linked weapons

System, Starwing only

When attacking with a cannon secondary weapon that costs 3 or fewer squad points, everyone ignores any instructions on the weapon upgrade card to cancel die results or to suffer damage.

Useful with Flechette, and Ion cannons, and even the tractor beam! It gives a 3 dice attack equivalent (without being a 3 dice primary weapon ship), plus the token effects of those cannons.

This is one of the ships I definitely hope they release - was always a favorite of mine in TIE FIghter.

Also, desperately want the TIE Avenger - wasn't as radical a design as the Defender, but was an impressive ship.

Quite a few people have had similar ideas (dating back to before the TIE/D title and even before the BTL-A4 title was released) - I've compiled some of them back on page 1.

Wow, I didn't know the Gunboat was canon. This is terrific! FFG can't ignore it forever!

What??? As far as I know it's not.... Unless it was in some new comic I haven't seen yet

It's in the Star Wars Edge of the Empire Fly Casual supplement, a book with the Disney signature. I hope that counts for something.

Its an RPG source book so no it doesn't. Its just there for if you want to play a campaign in the Legends universe.

It is nice to know that FFG has officially produced XG-1 Assault Gunboat artwork to draw from, however.
